Blue Jays' Max Scherzer: Set to face live hitters
Scherzer (thumb) is in line to face live batters Wednesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Scherzer is progressing in his recovery from right thumb inflammation that landed him on the 15-day injured list in late March. He'll continue to build up his workload and pitch count, and how his thumb responds following Wednesday's session will give the Blue Jays a better sense of when the veteran right-hander can return.

Orioles' Brandon Young: Working through shoulder discomfort
Young (shoulder) was placed on Triple-A Norfolk's 7-day injured list Tuesday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Young is working through right shoulder discomfort, which he experienced following Friday's start against Charlotte. The injury isn't severe enough to warrant an MRI at this point, but he will rest for an extended period of time before embarking on a rehab program. Eflin (lat) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday and said he's "as close as I can be" to coming off the injured list, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
The right-hander made a rehab start with High-A Aberdeen on Sunday and threw 58 pitches while allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over four scoreless innings. Allan Winans SP | NYY
Yankees' Allan Winans: Option to join rotation
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Winans is an option to join the rotation after Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Boone also mentioned Ryan Yarbrough as a possibility to make starts for the club. Marcus Stroman (knee) has resumed throwing off a mound and could rejoin the rotation later this month, but the Yankees will need someone else to fill the spot for at least a couple turns. Winans has yet to give up an earned run in 14 innings this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, collecting a 24:5 K:BB along the way.

The Yankees designated Carrasco for assignment Tuesday.
Carrasco made the Yankees' Opening Day rotation as a non-roster invitee, but he went on to post a 5.91 ERA with just 25 strikeouts over 32 innings covering six starts and two relief appearances. There's a good chance Carrasco clears waivers, and if he does, he will have the ability to elect free agency.
