  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Available out of bullpen

Arrighetti (calf) will pitch out of the bullpen for the weekend series against the Guardians, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Arrighetti was pulled from his last start Sunday against the Angels due to calf cramping. While he won't return to the rotation for the final series of the regular season, the 24-year-old right-hander could see some work out of the bullpen for a game or two to test out his calf ahead of the postseason. In 11 starts since the All-Star break, Arrighetti has a 3-6 record with a 3.30 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 74:18 K:BB across 62.2 innings.

  • Athletics' Ross Stripling: Returns from injured list

The Athletics reinstated Stripling (back) from the 15-day injured list Friday.

Stripling landed on the injured list Sept. 11 due to a lower-back strain and began facing live hitters again as recently as Tuesday. Now that he's healthy, he'll presumably take on a low-leverage role out of the bullpen for the final three games of the season. Meanwhile, Brady Basso will head to the Arizona Complex League in order to free up a roster spot.

  • Brady Basso SP | ATH

Athletics' Brady Basso: Optioned by Oakland

Oakland optioned Basso to the Arizona Complex League Athletics on Friday.

The move makes room on the A's 28-man roster for the reinstatement of right-hander Ross Stripling (back) from the 15-day injured list. Basso has made four starts for the Athletics in September, going 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB over 19 innings.

  • Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Throwing program next week

Gipson-Long (elbow) will begin a throwing program next week, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

It will be the first time he's thrown since he had Tommy John surgery in April. Gipson-Long could be an option to pitch for the Tigers around midseason in 2025.

  • Chris Bassitt SP | BAL

Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Not pitching in season finale

Manager John Schneider said Friday that Bassitt won't start Sunday's game against Miami, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

Bassitt was slated to start the Blue Jays' final game of the 2024 season, but the 35-year-old right-hander will be rested instead. Schneider didn't name a replacement starter. Bassitt finishes the campaign with a 4.16 ERA -- his worst since 2016 -- along with a 1.46 WHIP and 168:70 K:BB across 171 innings (31 starts).

  • Quinn Priester SP | MIL

Red Sox's Quinn Priester: Possibility to pitch Sunday

Priester is an option to start for the Red Sox on Sunday versus the Rays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Manager Alex Cora has ruled out Brayan Bello and Tanner Houck being used in the regular-season finale, but he didn't dismiss the possibility of Priester making his Red Sox debut. Priester has collected a 5.40 ERA and 42:12 K:BB over 38.1 innings covering nine starts with Triple-A Worcester since being acquired at the trade deadline from the Pirates.

  • Twins' Simeon Woods Richardson: Optioned to Triple-A

The Twins optioned Woods Richardson to Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday.

Woods Richardson wasn't going to pitch again during the regular season after recording just three outs and allowing three runs against the Marlins on Wednesday. The Twins will use his roster spot on a third catcher in Jair Camargo.

  • Casey Mize SP | DET

Tigers' Casey Mize: Pitches in relief Thursday

Mize allowed one run on three hits across two innings of relief in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Rays. He struck out four.

Detroit started Reese Olson, who covered just four innings in his third game back from a shoulder injury. Mize then worked the middle of the contest and was fairly sharp overall, particularly with the four strikeouts. Detroit appears headed to the postseason, and it remains to be seen how Mize will be used. The 27-year-old missed two months with a hamstring injury this year, which contributed to an uneven campaign and a 4.37 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 101 innings. However, at his best, Mize could give the Tigers a decent starting option to pair with staff ace Tarik Skubal during a playoff run.

  • Reese Olson SP | DET

Tigers' Reese Olson: Covers four innings Friday

Olson allowed two runs on four hits across four innings and did not factor into the decision Friday against the Rays. He struck out three.

Olson pitched decently enough but was limited to only 72 pitches in his third start back from a shoulder injury. It's an improvement from the 58 pitches and three innings he logged in his last outing Saturday. With just three games left in the regular season, Olson is not slated to take the mound again, though he figures to factor into Detroit's playoff plans if the team is able to secure its spot over the weekend. The 25-year-old had a solid campaign overall, posting a 3.53 ERA and 1.18 WHIP while recording 101 strikeouts across 112.1 innings.

  • David Festa P | MIN

Twins' David Festa: Strikes out five in no-decision

Festa did not factor into the decision in an extra-innings loss to the Marlins on Thursday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.

Festa got tagged for a run in the first inning after issuing a leadoff walk to open the frame and then surrendering an RBI double to Jake Burger two batters later. The right-hander then went on to retire nine of the next 10 batters he faced before allowing four of the first five batters to reach in the fifth, leading to his early departure. Festa has failed to make it through five frames in three of his last four outings, allowing multiple runs three times over that span. He carries a 4.91 ERA in September and hasn't won a start since Aug. 5 against the Cubs, a span of nine starts.
