Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans 10 Sunday

Ryan allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings Sunday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision.

Ryan got through four innings unscathed while racking up eight of his 10 strikeouts over that span. He found himself in some immediate trouble in the fifth after allowing a leadoff triple and wound up surrendering two runs in the inning following a pair of base knocks and a fielding error. Sunday was Ryan's second double-digit strikeout performance this season and his second straight outing without walking a batter. He's given up two runs or less in four of his last five starts, though that's only amounted to one win. The 28-year-old will carry an excellent 3.21 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 110:15 K:BB (103.2 innings) into a meeting with the ascending Astros over the weekend.

  • Andrew Heaney RP | LAD

Rangers' Andrew Heaney: Dominates Orioles on Sunday night

Heaney (3-9) got the win Sunday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 over seven innings.

Heaney had his most dominant start of the season, compiling double-digit strikeouts for the first time since he had 11 back in August of 2023. Sunday was also just the second time since May 11 that he's managed to not give up a walk. The Orioles pushed runs across in both the second and fourth innings but otherwise did not threaten and Heaney finished strong by striking out the side in the seventh. He's now allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last 12 starts. His record is deceiving due to the fact that the Rangers had scored a total of 30 runs in his first 15 starts this season. The 33-year-old southpaw will carry a 4.04 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 85:22 K:BB (84.2 innings) into a start against the Rays over the weekend.

  • Cole Irvin RP | LAD

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Another shaky outing Sunday

Irvin (6-5) took the loss against the Rangers on Sunday, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings.

Irvin served up a two-run blast to Derek Hill in the second and was chased out of the game in the fourth after surrendering a triple, three singles and a walk, leading to three more runs for the Rangers. He's now failed to cover at least five innings in three straight starts and has given up 14 runs over that span while compiling just a 5:4 K:BB in his last 12.1 innings pitched. Irvin now owns a 4.13 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 56:17 K:BB in 80.2 innings this season. He's lined up for a start against the Athletics this weekend, though it's worth monitoring what manager Brandon Hyde decides to do with his rotation spot following his recent struggles with Dean Kremer (triceps) on the cusp of returning from a rehab assignment.

  • Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Builds up to three innings

Springs (elbow) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five across three innings in a rehab outing with Triple-A Durham Friday, MLB.com reports.

The surface results weren't impressive for Springs, though all of his runs were surrendered on a home run. He also drew 12 whiffs on 29 swings against Triple-A Lehigh Valley, six of which came against changeups. In total he threw 45 pitches in his longest rehab outing since retaking the mound June 7. That workload suggests he has work left to do before being activated, but he'll soon need to agree to continue his rehab assignment with the team beyond the standard 30 days -- an option for pitchers returning from Tommy John surgery.

  • Chris Paddack SP | CIN

Twins' Chris Paddack: Throws bullpen session

Paddack (right forearm fatigue) threw a bullpen session Sunday, the Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Paddack said his arm grew fatigued in the past few weeks, which isn't uncommon for a pitcher in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. He hopes to return just after the All-Star break, so this bullpen session could be a sign he may not be out too long.

  • Gavin Williams SP | CLE

Guardians' Gavin Williams: Making first start Wednesday

Williams (elbow), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list earlier Sunday, is scheduled to make his first start of the season for the Guardians on Wednesday versus the White Sox at Progressive Field.

Williams' 30-day rehab window came to a close Sunday, so the Guardians brought him back from the IL a few days before he's set to make his 2024 MLB debut. The right-hander submitted a 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP across eight innings over his first four rehab starts with Triple-A Columbus, but he looked strong his last two times out, turning in five- and four-inning starts while allowing two total runs and submitting a 10:2 K:BB between those outings. The Guardians will likely keep the 24-year-old's workload in check to some extent Wednesday, but based on how he concluded his rehab assignment, Williams might be worthy of activating this week while he faces off against a weak White Sox lineup.

  • Casey Mize SP | DET

Tigers' Casey Mize: Set to undergo additional imaging

Mize (leg) will undergo further tests on his left leg, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

After exiting Sunday's win over the Angels in the bottom of the sixth inning with a left leg injury, Mize will see what the extent of the damage is. In regard to if it was a cramp or not, the right hander said "that's what it felt like" and that he and the team will "see how the next couple of days play out." The severity of his injury will be determined once Mize receives the results of the imaging.

  • David Festa P | MIN

Twins' David Festa: Awarded another start

Festa is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers at Target Field.

Tabbed as a replacement in the big-league rotation this past Thursday for the injured Chris Paddack (forearm), Festa surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and one walk and struck out just two batters but received enough run support to come away with a win against the Diamondbacks. Festa was cruising early in his debut and faced just one batter more than the minimum through three innings, but he began to unravel over his final two frames, when he allowed all seven of his hits. Festa may need a better showing in Minnesota against a weaker Detroit offense to ensure he gets additional turns through the rotation, as Caleb Boushley has been pitching well at Triple-A St. Paul and looms as an alternative as the Twins' No. 5 starter if Festa can't get the job done.

  • Taj Bradley SP | MIN

Rays' Taj Bradley: Continues to dominate

Bradley (3-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing no runs on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Nationals. He struck out 11.

Bradley held the Nationals off the board while matching a season high in strikeouts. Since allowing nine runs and four homers against Baltimore on June 1, Bradley has been on a heater, posting five-consecutive starts allowing two earned runs or fewer while accumulating double-digit strikeout totals during two of those outings. During that stretch, he's completed 29 innings, allowing just four earned runs (1.24 ERA) with a 1.00 WHIP and 40 strikeouts. He'll look to keep things rolling during his next start, tentatively slated to take place next weekend when the Rays travel to Arlington to take on the Rangers.

  • Casey Mize SP | DET

Tigers' Casey Mize: Exits with apparent leg injury

Mize left Sunday's outing against the Angels in the bottom of the sixth inning with an apparent leg injury, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Mize was in the midst of one of his best starts of the season, striking out two while allowing five baserunners over 5.1 scoreless innings before "cramping up" and grabbing at the back of his left leg, according to McCosky. More information on Mize's status will likely come later Sunday or Monday, but if his departure ultimately does end up being the result of cramping, there's won't be much concern for his availability moving forward.
