  • Johan Oviedo SP | BOS

Cardinals' Johan Oviedo: Contract selected for Game 2

Oviedo had his contract selected by the Cardinals and will start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cubs.

The 22-year-old will likely pitch as long as possible with the Cardinals playing their third doubleheader in the past five days. Oviedo spent most of the 2019 campaign at Double-A Springfield and had a 5.65 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 128:64 K:BB over 113 innings.

  • Phillies' Vince Velasquez: Starting Game 2 on Thursday

Velasquez is starting Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Spencer Howard will get the ball for Game 1 while Velasquez starts the second half of Thursday's twin bill. The right-hander has made three appearances (two starts) for the Phillies this season, allowing seven runs across eight innings while posting an 11:6 K:BB.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

Pirates' Joe Musgrove: Making good progress

Musgrove (triceps) is making good progress and is expected to throw off a mound soon, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Musgrove hasn't pitched in over two weeks, first with a sore ankle and then with triceps inflammation. While the latest reports about his progress are quite positive, it remains unclear exactly when he'll return from the injured list.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Won't be limited Wednesday

DeGrom won't have any workload limitations for his start Wednesday in Miami, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.

DeGrom will be starting for the first time in 10 days after being scratched from his previous start with a stiff neck. He's been able to throw several times in the intervening days, however, so he should be able to pitch deep into the game against the Marlins.

  • Mitch Keller SP | PIT

Pirates' Mitch Keller: Nearing mound work

Keller (oblique) has played catch off flat ground as is expected to throw off a mound next week, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Keller left early with an oblique issue in just his second start of the year. While it's certainly a positive that he's progressing in the right direction, his next time throwing off a mound will be his first in over three weeks, so he'll presumably need multiple sessions before being returning from the injured list.

  • Mets' Michael Wacha: Completes simulated game

Wacha (shoulder) threw a four-inning simulated game Wednesday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.

Wacha fired around 59 pitches and said he felt very well afterwards. While this is an encouraging development for the right-hander, it remains to be seen when he will slot back into New York's rotation. Prior to landing on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, Wacha struggled to a 6.43 ERA across three starts (14 innings).

  • Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: BP pushed to Thursday

Alcantara (not injury related) is expected to throw live batting practice Thursday, Andre Fernandez of Sirius XM Radio reports.

Alcantara was originally scheduled to throw around 50 pitches against hitters Wednesday, but the session was pushed back a day due to inclement weather. If everything goes well during Thursday's throwing session, Alcantara could be cleared to rejoin the big-league rotation early next week.

  • David Peterson SP | CHC

Mets' David Peterson: MRI shows no structural damage

Peterson's MRI on his sore left shoulder Wednesday revealed minor inflammation but no structural damage, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.

The lack of structural damage is undoubtedly good news for Peterson and the Mets, though he'll still miss at least one more start while he remains on the injured list. It's not yet clear when the Mets expect him to return, as his timeline will likely depend on how quickly the inflammation subsides.

  • David Peterson SP | CHC

    Mets' David Peterson: Undergoes MRI

Peterson underwent an MRI on his sore left shoulder Wednesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Peterson was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Marlins and will miss at least one more turn in the rotation, as he's since been placed on the injured list. A clearer sense of his timeline should emerge once the results of the MRI are known.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Reds' Wade Miley: Expected to start Saturday

Miley (undisclosed) is expected to start Saturday in St. Louis, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Miley suffered a groin injury early in the season and appeared to suffer some sort of injury in his return from the injured list back on Aug. 12, as he seemed in some discomfort while covering first base in the second inning and exited shortly after. He's been able to have some extra rest due to a positive COVID-19 test cancelling a few games for the Reds, as his next start will come 10 days after his previous outing.
