  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Confirmed as starter

Stripling will start Wednesday against the Padres.

Stripling hasn't pitched more than three innings in any of his four appearances this month, so he likely won't pitch long enough to qualify for the win Wednesday. The right-hander posted an impressive 0.90 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 9:0 K:BB over that 10-inning stretch.

  • Cardinals' Michael Wacha: Removed with tight shoulder

Wacha was removed from Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks with right shoulder tightness, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Prior to exiting, Wacha allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters across 1.2 innings. Mike Mayers entered the game for the right-hander, whose postseason availability is in jeopardy following this injury.

  • Cardinals' Michael Wacha: Exits with apparent injury

Wacha was removed from Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks with an apparent injury, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

It's unclear what forced Wacha to exit Wednesday's game with a trainer, but it comes at a tough time with less than a week left in the regular season. Prior to exiting, the right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three batters in 1.2 innings. Mike Mayers entered the game in his place.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Reds' Sonny Gray: Opts for arthroscopic elbow surgery

Gray underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Wednesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

The procedure, which cleaned up loose bodies that he apparently dealt with all season, isn't expected to affect Gray's normal offseason routine. The right-hander enjoyed a bounce-back campaign in 2019, compiling a 2.87 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 205 strikeouts across 175.1 innings (31 starts) with the Reds.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Diamondbacks' Taijuan Walker: Hoping to return over weekend

Walker (elbow/shoulder) is hoping to pitch during Arizona's upcoming series against the Padres, which begins Friday, Jack Magruder of the Associated Press reports.

Walker has been sidelined all season while working his way back from elbow and shoulder injuries. With the Diamondbacks eliminated from playoff contention, it sounds like the team will try and get Walker into a game before the end of the season, assuming everything goes off without a hitch during his scheduled bullpen session Thursday.

  • Zac Gallen SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Officially done for season

Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed Gallen will not pitch again this season, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

With the Diamondbacks no longer fighting for a playoff spot, this isn't all too surprising, as Gallen has already thrown a career-high 171.1 innings between the majors and minors this season. The rookie right-hander made 15 big-league starts with the Marlins and Diamondbacks, posting a 2.81 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 96:36 K:BB in 80 innings. He's expected to claim one of Arizona's rotation spots in 2020.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Uncertain to make another start

Manager Bruce Bochy admitted Tuesday that he wasn't sure whether Cueto would make a start during the Giants' season-ending series with the Dodgers this weekend, the Associated Press reports.

After tossing five scoreless innings in both of his first two starts back from the injured list, Cueto struggled mightily in his most recent turn last weekend in Atlanta. He was charged for four runs in four innings in the loss, giving up only two hits but issuing five walks. Bochy noted the Giants will see how Cueto looks during his scheduled bullpen session Wednesday before determining whether the right-hander is good to go for his next turn, which comes up Friday.

  • Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Sharp in relief appearance

Gonsolin (4-2) picked up the win Tuesday against the Padres, striking out three batters across two perfect innings.

Rich Hill pitched the first two innings before giving way to Gonsolin, who needed just 24 pitches (15 strikes) to retire all six batters he faced. It was a nice bounce-back performance from the right-hander after he allowed two runs across two innings in his previous outing. Gonsolin will likely make one more relief appearance before the end of the season as he auditions for a postseason bullpen role.

  • Jack Flaherty SP | DET

Cardinals' Jack Flaherty: Yields one hit in no-decision

Flaherty did not factor in the decision against Arizona on Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 11.

Flaherty held the Diamondbacks without a hit through six innings before Eduardo Escobar bounced a single off the first-base bag in the seventh. It was another masterful outing in a dominant second half of the season for Flaherty; since the All-Star break, he has posted a minuscule 0.97 ERA and 2.25 FIP while racking up 118 strikeouts in 92.1 innings. His next appearance will be determined by the outcome of the NL Central race, with the most likely scenario being a start in Game 1 of the NLDS next Thursday.

  • Julio Teheran SP | BAL

Braves' Julio Teheran: Roughed up by Royals

Teheran (10-11) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering six runs on six hits and a walk over 2.1 innings as Atlanta fell 9-6 to the Royals. He struck out one.

While the right-hander didn't serve up a homer this time out, the results weren't any prettier than they were in his last two outings. Teheran closes out the regular season with losses in three straight starts and a 6.56 ERA through 23.1 innings in September, and while Atlanta is headed for the playoffs, there's no guarantee he'll have a role in the team's postseason rotation plans.
