  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Still 10-to-14 days away

Manager Mike Shildt said Martinez (shoulder) could be ready to return in 10-to-14 days, David Solomon of 590 The Fan reports.

Martinez looked good during his second rehab appearance Wednesday -- and first for Triple-A Memphis -- firing 23 pitches and recording one strikeout in a scoreless inning of relief. The right-hander was apparently sitting around 95-98 mph with his fastball. He'll likely need to make a handful more appearances with Memphis before being cleared to rejoin the the big club, but if everything goes as planned, Martinez could be back with the Cardinals as early as May 21, when the Cardinals begin a two-game series against the Royals.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Short IL stint expected

Matz (forearm) is expected to rejoin the rotation May 16 against the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Matz was placed on the injured list Thursday with a nerve issue in his left forearm, though his stay on the shelf isn't expected to last much longer than the 10-day minimum. Barring any setbacks, the southpaw should be ready to rejoin the rotation after missing just one turn. With an off day Monday, the Mets figure to shift their rotation up a day to accommodate Matz's slightly later-than-expected return.

Mets' Steven Matz: Lands on IL

Matz (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.

Matz is dealing with a nerve issue in his left forearm. The move is retroactive to May 5, so Matz will be eligible to return as early as next Wednesday, should he prove ready. With an off day Monday, the Mets won't need a fifth starter until May 18, at which point Matz may be ready to come off the injured list. Dominic Smith was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.

  • Zac Gallen SP | ARI

Marlins' Zac Gallen: Wins fifth straight for Baby Cakes

Gallen allowed one run on two hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out seven for Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday.

The right-hander has now won five straight starts for the Baby Cakes, and he's 6-for-7 on the year in delivering quality starts -- missing the seventh by just one out. Gallen boasts a 1.14 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 55:8 K:BB through 47.1 innings and clearly has nothing left to prove in the minors, and while he would probably represent an immediate upgrade on Sandy Alcantara or even Jose Urena in the Miami rotation, the fact that Gallen's not on the 40-man roster complicates his chances of making a big-league debut any time soon.

  • Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Carried by offense to win

Kershaw (2-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's 9-4 victory over Atlanta, allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out four.

This was far from vintage Kershaw, but the Dodgers put runs on the board in five separate innings and slugged three homers to give the southpaw more than enough offensive support. He'll take a 3.31 ERA and 31:6 K:BB through 32.2 innings into his next start Tuesday, at home against the Padres.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Reds' Sonny Gray: Can't find plate in no-decision

Gray didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to the A's, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks over 4.1 innings while striking out three.

After walking only two batters in his previous four starts, Gray has issued 10 free passes in his last three, pushing his WHIP from 0.97 to 1.21 in the process. The right-hander's 0.46 HR/9 through 39 innings has been outstanding, and his 4.15 ERA and 41:16 K:BB solid, but he still has yet to really put things together in Cincy. He'll look for a better result in his next outing Tuesday, at home against the Cubs.

  • Kyle Hendricks SP | LAA

Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Delivers eight dominant innings

Hendricks allowed one run (none earned) on five hits while striking seven through eight innings in a no-decision against the Marlins on Wednesday. He did not issue a walk.

Hendricks generated 25 called strikes on his way to his third quality start. He usually limits the free passes, but he has been exceptional in that department of late, allowing only one walk in his last three starts combined. The 29-year-old has a 2-4 record with a 3.19 ERA and 34:8 K:BB through seven starts this season. Hendricks will make his next start Tuesday in Cincinnati.

  • Jose Urena SP | LAA

Marlins' Jose Urena: Goes seven solid innings

Urena gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out three through seven innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Urena allowed eight baserunners but was able to escape trouble most of the night, allowing only one earned run in seven innings. After allowing four combined home runs in his last two starts, he kept the ball in the yard and generated 75 percent groundballs. The 27-year-old has a 1-5 record with a 4.82 ERA and 6.2 K/9 through eight starts this season. Urena will make his next start Tuesday against the Rays.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

    Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Starting Thursday

Freeland is scheduled to start Thursday's series finale against the Giants, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.

Freeland will stick on his five-day pitching schedule despite Wednesday night's postponement. The 25-year-old has a 5.90 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB through his first seven starts (39.2 innings) and is coming off an ugly outing against the Diamondbacks in which he allowed eight runs.

  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

Rockies' Jon Gray: Wednesday's game postponed

Gray won't make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants as the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

Gray will now get some extra rest after giving up five runs in each of his past two starts. According to Nick Groke of The Athletic, Kyle Freeland will stay on schedule and pitch Thursday for the Rockies, while Gray is likely to retake the mound this weekend versus the Padres.
