  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Hits DL with back tightness

Wainwright was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with mid-back tightness.

This trip to the DL will be Wainwright's first since 2015. Without knowing the severity of the back injury, it's hard to say if the veteran pitcher will be forced to miss more than one start. Luke Weaver was scratched from his minor-league start Tuesday, Rob Rains of StLSportsPage.com reports, so it appears that he may step into Wainwright's spot in the rotation.

  • Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: Nerve impingement alleviated

Strasburg had some nerve impingement that has been alleviated, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports. He threw on flat ground Tuesday and could still start Saturday's game against the Rockies.

The Nationals did not specify where the nerve impingement was, but it was presumably in his right forearm, as that is where he had stiffness when he was removed from Sunday's start. This explains why the Nationals have opted not to give Strasburg an MRI, as it seems they believe the problem has been resolved. The team will evaluate his progress over the next couple days before locking him in as Saturday's starter. Erick Fedde would be an option to be promoted from Triple-A to start if Strasburg needs more time off.

  • Kolby Allard RP | CLE

Braves' Kolby Allard: Rough stretch leads to rise in ERA at Double-A

Allard, 19, has allowed 12 earned runs over his last two starts for Double-A Mississippi.

Allard's recent struggles have caused his ERA to rise nearly a full run over the last three weeks to 3.75. Still, the impressive teenager is pitching against older hitters with far more experience and he's more than holding his own. With the aggressive approach the Braves take with their prospects, Allard could see the big leagues as early as next season.

  • Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: No MRI, could start Saturday

Strasburg (forearm) does not need an MRI and the Nationals are hopeful that he will be able to start Saturday's game against the Rockies, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports.

Manager Dusty Baker would not rule out a DL stint for Strasburg, but overall the mood seemed to be positive regarding the righty's long-term health. The team will evaluate how he progresses over the next couple days before making an official decision regarding this weekend's rotation. Strasburg left his last start with a forearm stiffness as a precaution.

  • Jake Thompson SP | PHI

Phillies' Jake Thompson: Recalled from Triple-A

Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.

While Thompson had been working as a starter at Triple-A, he was recalled to give some added length to the Phillies' bullpen, which has been worked hard lately. His big-league numbers in both roles have been mediocre, but he has the repertoire to succeed over a long stretch in relief if he can adjust to that role long term. Look for him to be used in low-leverage spots. Ricardo Pinto was sent to Triple-A as a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Anthony DeSclafani: Completes first rehab start

DeSclafani (elbow) made a rehab start with the Reds' rookie-level Arizona League club Sunday, tossing 2.1 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk. He struck out three batters.

It was the first game action for DeSclafani since last September, as he was never able to toe the rubber in spring training after experiencing tenderness in his elbow that was later diagnosed as a UCL sprain. He tossed 47 pitches in the outing, with manager Bryan Price reporting that DeSclafani flashed a "good slider" and "good velocity," according to Ben Weinrib of MLB.com. Price noted that he's still hopeful the right-hander will be able to return from the 60-day disabled list in mid-to-late August, but before that happens, he'll need to raise his pitch count while completing several more rehab starts across multiple minor-league affiliates. DeSclafani is scheduled to make his next outing Saturday with Low-A Dayton, likely throwing 45 to 50 pitches.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Activated, optioned to minors

Woodruff (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday and optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The Brewers recalled Woodruff on June 13 to make a spot start in what would have been his MLB debut, but that never came to fruition as the right-hander experienced hamstring tightness prior to the outing, resulting in his being scratched. Though Woodruff is now healthy again following two rehab starts, the Brewers don't have an existing opening in the rotation for him, so he'll continue to make regular starts with Colorado Springs. Over 67.2 innings at Triple-A this season, Woodruff has posted a 4.79 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 64:22 K:BB.

  • Tyler Anderson SP | LAA

Rockies' Tyler Anderson: Resumes playing catch

Anderson (knee) resumed playing catch last Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Anderson was still wearing a brace on his knee while playing catch, so he's not quite out of the woods yet in his recovery from arthroscopic surgery earlier this month. It's not clear when the lefty will be cleared to resume throwing off a mound, but once that happens, he'll likely head out on a rehab assignment soon thereafter. Anderson seems unlikely to return before mid-August.

  • Gerrit Cole SP | NYY

Pirates' Gerrit Cole: Labors through six innings for quality start

Cole (8-7) allowed two runs over six innings during Monday's win over the Giants. He allowed six hits and four walks while striking out four to pick up his eighth win of the season.

After issuing just one walk over his previous three starts, Cole had trouble commanding his pitches Monday as he worked up a season-high pitch count of 115 through six innings. Despite issuing a season-high four free passes, the 26-year-old was able to work out of trouble to earn his fourth consecutive quality start. Cole's next start projects to be against the Padres on Sunday.

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu SP | TOR

Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu: Rusty in first start off DL

Ryu allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over five innings in Monday's no-decision against the Twins.

Ryu struggled with command problems in his first appearance since June 28, walking more than two batters for just the third time in 14 starts. The powerful Los Angeles offense unsurprisingly had him in line for a win with a 3-2 lead after five innings, but the bullpen quickly dashed those hopes by allowing a run in the sixth. Ryu should be sharper in his next start Saturday against a Giants team that ranks 26th with a meager .678 OPS against lefties.
