Giants' Johnny Cueto: Hopeful for return when eligible

Manager Bruce Bochy announced Saturday that the hope is Cueto (finger) will only miss two turns in the rotation while on the disabled list, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Matt Cain will temporarily move back into the rotation while Cueto is on the shelf due to a blister issue on his pitching hand. While the hope is that Cueto will only miss the minimum 10 days, the team will be patient and not rush the veteran back before the blisters are fully healed. For now, look for Cueto to try to return in late July.

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Heads to DL with blister issue

Cueto (hand) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

His move to the DL opens a roster spot for Saturday's starter, Madison Bumgarner. Cueto has been pestered by blisters at different points this season, with the latest flareup coming during Friday's four-inning appearance. The hope is that the downtime on the disabled list will allow Cueto's blisters to heal properly so that he can hold up for the rest of the season once he returns.

  • Vance Worley SP | NYM

Marlins' Vance Worley: Serving mostly as spot starter

Worley has pitched 25.2 innings over 10 games (four starts) with an ERA of 6.31 and 23 strikeouts.

Since getting called up on May 20, Worley has served mostly as a spot starter for the rotation, occasionally seeing time out of the bullpen as a means to keep him in form. Without major playing time, the 29-year-old veteran won't see many chances to improve upon his stats, giving him low value in even the deepest leagues.

  • Tyler Glasnow SP | LAD

Pirates' Tyler Glasnow: Finding minor-league success

Glasnow hurled seven scoreless innings for Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out six.

Since the Pirates demoted him to Triple-A on June 10, Glasnow has compiled a 1.49 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 55:15 K:BB in 36.1 innings. Pittsburgh's current rotation is probably the strongest it's been all season long, so the 6-foot-8 righty will likely have to wait for injuries to strike before he returns to PNC Park. In the meantime, he'll continue to regroup at Triple-A after posting a 7.45 ERA in 12 early-season starts for the Bucs.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Diamondbacks' Taijuan Walker: Delivers quality start Friday

Walker allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four over six innings but didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Braves.

It was a strong start to the second half for the right-hander, who threw 73 of 101 pitches for strikes but got little run support from an Arizona offense that sputtered into the All-Star break. Walker has now produced quality starts in five of his last six outings heading into his next trip to the mound Thursday on the road against the Reds.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Could miss next start with blisters

Cueto is dealing with multiple blisters on his hand and could miss his next start, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The blister epidemic in 2017 continues. Baggarly referred to the blisters as "hot spots," and the club probably wants to take it slow with Cueto to ensure the blisters don't burst, which could easily turn a short-term injury into a long-term one. It's unclear if Cueto will need a DL trip yet, as he might be able to return after just one skipped turn, if that.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Lasts four innings in no-decision

Cueto lasted just four innings and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a no-decision Friday against the Padres.

Cueto has now allowed nine runs over 10 innings since returning from injury July 9. He has just three quality starts in eight outings since June. At this point, every outing for Cueto is an audition for a potential trade, but right now, he's not looking like a particularly appealing asset for contenders.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Rides offense to 11th win

Davies (11-4) picked up the win despite allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and five walks with six strikeouts over 5.1 innings Friday against the Phillies.

Davies was gifted an eight-run second inning and just barely managed to keep the floodgates from bursting. This has been the story of Davies's season thus far. He was getting an average of six runs of support per game entering Friday's start, fifth most among all qualified MLB starters. Davies's ERA is up to 5.08, though, so don't get too enamored by that slick win-loss record.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Fans 11 in Friday's laugher

DeGrom (10-3) gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out 11 over eight innings in Friday's 14-2 rout of the Rockies.

The Mets handed their ace a 9-1 lead by the end of the fourth inning, allowing deGrom to pound the zone and fire 73 of 104 pitches for strikes while cruising to an easy victory. He's rebounded in spectacular fashion from his struggles in late May and early June, allowing one earned run or less and working at least seven innings in five of his last six starts to lower his ERA to 3.48. He'll try to keep things rolling Wednesday at home against the Cardinals.

  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

Rockies' Jon Gray: Crushed by Mets in Friday's rout

Gray (2-1) surrendered eight runs on nine hits and three walks over just two-plus innings in Friday's 14-2 loss to the Mets. He struck out one.

It may look like the line from a Rockies home game, but the right-hander's troubles came in Citi Field this time as the first six New York batters in the third inning all reached base and scored, and all on Gray's ledger. The ugly outing sent his ERA soaring from 3.75 to 6.23, but his 25:12 K:BB through 26 innings since coming off the DL at the end of June offers hope that he'll be able to shave it back down again.
