MacKenzie Gore SP | TEX
Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Optimistic about 2025 return
Gore (shoulder) intends to pitch again this season, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
The left-hander landed on the injured list Saturday with what the Nationals described as shoulder inflammation, but the issue doesn't appear to be serious. "It's something, the way it felt last start, where we needed to get an MRI," Gore said Saturday. "Nothing crazy showed up with significant injury. I didn't want to go on the IL, but we kind of needed to. I plan on being back as soon as I can, but we just need to clean up a few things in there and should be alright." With Washington having nothing to play for this season however, it wouldn't be a big surprise if Gore was shut down out of caution should he have any sort of hiccup once he begins throwing again. Over 27 starts and 147.1 innings this year, the 26-year-old has a 4.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 173:55 K:BB.

Luinder Avila SP | KC
Royals' Luinder Avila: Back in big leagues
The Royals recalled Avila from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Though Avila made a one-inning relief appearance in his MLB debut back on Aug. 13 against the Nationals, Kansas City will likely be counting on him to provide some length out of the bullpen in September. Avila has mostly served as a swingman at Omaha this season, starting in nine of his 14 appearances while accruing a 5.23 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 61:23 K:BB in 53.1 innings.

Kodai Senga SP | NYM
Mets' Kodai Senga: Could lose rotation spot
Senga may be removed from the rotation as the Mets try to hang onto a playoff spot in September, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. "We're going to have some discussion about what's next for him," manager Carlos Mendoza said after Sunday's loss to the Marlins, during which Senga coughed up five runs in 4.2 innings.
The 32-year-old right-hander hasn't been able to regain his form since returning from a hamstring injury just before the All-Star break, and things were particularly grim for Senga in August as he stumbled to a 6.18 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 27:14 K:BB over six starts and 27.2 innings. The Mets should get Tylor Megill (elbow) back from the 60-day injured list as soon as Sunday and are trying to keep a starting spot available for rookie Jonah Tong, so they have the depth to bump Senga from the rotation until he shows signs of a turnaround. New York currently sits six games back of Philadelphia in the NL East, and four games ahead of Cincinnati for the final wild-card spot in the Senior Circuit.

Luis Garcia SP | HOU
Astros' Luis Garcia: Activated ahead of Monday's start
The Astros reinstated Garcia (elbow) from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start Monday against the Angels in Houston.
Garcia, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023 and required a longer than usual recovery, is coming off his best rehab start, as he went six innings and allowed one earned run with five strikeouts for Triple-A Sugar Land this past Tuesday. He's tentatively set up for a two-start week in his return to the big leagues, with a matchup in Texas on tap for Sunday.

Luis Severino SP | ATH
Athletics' Luis Severino: Returns from injured list
The Athletics activated Severino (oblique) from the 15-day injured list Monday.
Severino is set to rejoin the rotation Tuesday with a start in St. Louis after missing more than three weeks with an oblique strain. The veteran right-hander didn't make a rehab start, instead throwing a simulated game last week. It's unclear how many pitches Severino threw in that sim game, but he'll likely be under a workload restriction against the Cardinals.

Edward Cabrera SP | CHC
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Goes on IL with elbow sprain
The Marlins placed Cabrera on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a right elbow sprain.
The team hasn't revealed when Cabrera's elbow began bothering him, but he was knocked around in his last start, allowing six runs (five earned) over four innings in a win over the Mets on Saturday. The right-hander will be evaluated further before a timeline for his return is laid out. Given the nature of the injury, a return before the end of the season seems unlikely, and surgery could be a possibility. If his season is indeed over, Cabrera will finish with a 3.57 ERA and 140:42 K:BB over 128.2 innings covering 24 starts.

Andrew Alvarez P | WAS
Nationals' Andrew Alvarez: Added to roster ahead of debut
The Nationals selected Alvarez's contract from Triple-A Rochester on Monday.
Alvarez is set to make his major-league debut Monday with a start at home against the Marlins, taking the rotation spot of the injured MacKenzie Gore (shoulder). The left-handed Alvarez held a 4.10 ERA and 114:52 K:BB over 123 innings covering 25 starts for Rochester this season. He should receive multiple turns in the rotation while Gore is shelved.

Reynaldo Lopez RP | ATL
Braves' Reynaldo Lopez: Unlikely to pitch again in 2025
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Aug. 14 that Lopez (shoulder) is unlikely to return from the 60-day injured list before the end of the season, MLB.com reports.
Snitker didn't specifically note that Lopez has experienced a setback in his recovery from the arthroscopic right shoulder surgery that he underwent in April. However, with Atlanta well removed from playoff contention heading into the final month of the season, Lopez won't be rushed along in his rehab program. Lopez resumed playing catch about a month ago and could continue throwing in September with the aim of having something close to a normal offseason. The right-hander is under club control through 2027 and should be in the running for a rotation spot next spring.

Bailey Falter SP | KC
Royals' Bailey Falter: Steps back on mound
Falter (biceps) completed a bullpen session Saturday, MLB.com reports.
Falter landed on the injured list Aug. 23 due to a left biceps contusion, but his ability to resume throwing off a mound one week later suggests he won't be in store for an extended stay on the shelf. The Royals are expected to re-evaluate early this week before deciding on if he's ready to take the next step in the recovery process by facing hitters.

Cole Ragans RP | KC
Royals' Cole Ragans: Tosses 40-pitch bullpen session
Ragans (shoulder) completed a 40-pitch up-and-down bullpen session Saturday, MLB.com reports.
For the past few weeks, Ragans has thrown multiple bullpen sessions as he begins to build back up again following a prolonged shutdown due to a left rotator cuff strain. Assuming all went well during Saturday's session, Ragans will take the next step forward in his rehab by facing live hitters during the upcoming week. The southpaw could then head out on a rehab assignment, which could set him up for a return from the 60-day injured list around the middle of September. Ragans appears as though he'll get the chance to rejoin the Royals in a starting role, but since he may not have sufficient time to get fully stretched out in the minors, he could be operating with more limited pitch counts than usual once he gets activated.
