Twins' Brooks Lee: Starts up rehab assignment

Lee (back) went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and played seven innings at shortstop Sunday in his first rehab game with Single-A Fort Myers.

A lumbar strain forced Lee to the 10-day injured list prior to Opening Day, but now that he's started up a rehab assignment, he could be ready to make his return to the Twins around the middle of April. Expect Lee to eventually shift his assignment to Triple-A St. Paul, and he'll likely get some exposure to two or three different infield spots before Minnesota signs off on him making his MLB season debut. Second base or third base look to be Lee's most likely avenues to seeing consistent at-bats with the big club, as both Jose Miranda and Edouard Julien have gotten off to slow starts to the season at the plate.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

Angels' Kevin Newman: Losing out on playing time

Newman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.

With just one hit through his first 13 at-bats of the season, Newman has begun to lose playing time and will now hit the bench for the third time in four games. Tim Anderson will draw a second straight start at shortstop and seems to have at least temporarily leapfrogged Newman on the depth chart.

  • Tim Anderson 2B | LAA

Angels' Tim Anderson: Getting second straight start

Anderson will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Guardians.

After going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run in Saturday's 10-4 win, Anderson will pick up a second straight start. He may have inched ahead of Kevin Newman in the competition for primary duties at shortstop, though playing time at the position remains fluid.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Out of lineup vs. lefty

Holliday is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

With lefty Kris Bubic taking the hill for Kansas City, Holliday will retreat to the bench. Jordan Westburg will shift over from third base and fill in at the keystone.

  • Trey Sweeney SS | DET

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Sitting vs. southpaw

Sweeney is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox.

Sweeney is in the midst of a five-game hit streak during which he's gone 7-for-20 with a double, a triple and a homer, but he'll sit Sunday against Chicago lefty Martin Perez. Javier Baez will step in at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Pops first homer

Witt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday against the Orioles.

Witt has gotten off to a relatively slow start to the season, as he had only one extra-base hit across 29 at-bats entering Saturday's game. While it was a quiet game offensively for the Royals, Witt managed to change his fortunes a bit by slugging his first home run of the campaign in the sixth inning. He's also shown aggressiveness on the basepaths, recording three steals on four attempts.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

Angels' Kevin Newman: Not starting Saturday

Newman is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Guardians, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.

Newman has been losing quite a bit of playing time recently due to his poor start, though he finally managed to log his first hit of the new season during Friday's loss. Tim Anderson will start in Newman's place at shortstop Saturday and bat ninth.

  • Taylor Walls 3B | TB

Rays' Taylor Walls: Sitting down Saturday

Walls is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against Texas, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.

After going 0-for-8 with four strikeouts over his last three games, Walls will get a chance to regroup Saturday while Jose Caballero starts at shortstop and bats ninth.

  • Brooks Lee SS | MIN

    Twins' Brooks Lee: Making progress

Lee (back) began playing in rehab games at the Twins' spring training complex earlier this week, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports.

The 24-year-old infielder developed back trouble toward the end of camp -- the second straight spring in which that's happened, as a herniated disc delayed his 2024 debut until June -- but this year's issue appears far less serious. Lee may need a brief rehab assignment before rejoining the Twins, but he appears to be getting close to activation. With Royce Lewis (hamstring) further behind in his recovery and Jose Miranda batting .158 (3-for-19) with zero extra-base hits so far, the door figures to be open for Lee to take over as Minnesota's starting third baseman as soon as he's cleared to return.

  • Trevor Story SS | BOS

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Homers in home opener

Story went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's 13-9 win over the Cardinals.

Story got Fenway Park rocking in Boston's home opener with a three-run blast in the first inning. It was his second homer in the last three games. Healthy again after three injury-plagued seasons, Story could finally deliver on a six-year contract he signed in 2022.
