  • Chase Meidroth SS | CHW

White Sox's Chase Meidroth: Exits game due to calf cramps

Meidroth was removed in the fifth inning of Saturday's spring game against the Dodgers due to calf cramps.

Batting out of the leadoff spot and playing second base, Meidroth went 0-for-2 before being replaced by Dominic Fletcher in the bottom of the fifth frame. Meidroth is considered day-to-day with the calf cramps, though the White Sox could take the cautious route and keep him off the field for the next couple of days. Across seven spring games, Meidroth has gone 2-for-14 with five walks, two runs, one double and one RBI.

  • Vaughn Grissom SS | LAA

Red Sox's Vaughn Grissom: Heating up

Grissom went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in Friday's spring game against the Marlins.

After going 1-for-13 to start Grapefruit League competition, Grissom has hit in three straight, going 4-for-9 with two walks, two doubles and two RBI. He opened spring training as one of a group competing for the starting job at second base. One of those competitors, Kristian Campbell, has recently received more playing time (and practice time) in the outfield, leaving Grissom and David Hamilton to patrol the keystone. The elephant in the room is how Red Sox manager Alex Cora deploys third baseman Rafael Devers (shoulder) and Alex Bregman. Devers is expected to begin playing spring games this week as the designated hitter while Bregman continues on at third base. If Cora eventually decides Devers will be his third baseman, that means Bregman would move to second base and limit Grissom's opportunities.

  • Trevor Story SS | BOS

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Slugs two homers

Story went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and an additional run scored in Friday's spring game against Miami.

The homers were the first of the spring for Story, and five of his 10 hits have gone for extra bases. He's served as Boston's cleanup hitter in six of seven Grapefruit League starts.

  • Wenceel Perez SS | DET

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Planning to play Monday

Perez (back) plans to play in Monday's spring training game against the Yankees, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

While he has missed close to a week of action with lower-back tightness, Perez is said to be feeling "great." All indications are that he will be back in short order and ready to serve in a utility role come Opening Day.

  • Carlos Correa SS | HOU

Twins' Carlos Correa: Slow, but healthy, start to spring

Correa went 0-for-3 with a walk in Friday's spring training tie with Tampa Bay. He's hitting .063 (1-for-16) in six games this spring.

While he'd like to have a better start to the spring at the plate, Correa has looked healthy at shortstop after playing just 86 games last season due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Correa hit .308 with a .896 OPS in the first half and was named to the AL All-Star team before his foot issues, so he could have a bounce-back season if he can stay on the field.

  • Chase Meidroth SS | CHW

White Sox's Chase Meidroth: Good plate discipline in spring

Meidroth has gone 2-for-14 with a double, three strikeouts and five walks in Cactus League games.

Meidroth was acquired as part of the return from the Red Sox for Garrett Crochet and has a chance to win the shortstop job out of spring training. Hits haven't fallen in for him, but he's still shown decent ability to make contact while reaching base at a .368 clip. That fits Meidroth's profile as a prospect, as he's known for his hit tool but lacks other tools to make a significant impact on the game.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Could see work at shortstop

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Friday that Holliday will be getting reps at shortstop and could play at the position at the start of the 2025 regular season due to the potential absence of Gunnar Henderson (side), Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

The Orioles are going through contingency plans in case Henderson cannot play in the early portion of the 2025 campaign, and that includes having Holliday or even Jordan Westburg filling in at shortstop. Holliday mostly played shortstop in the minors, but he transitioned to second base during spring training in 2024 and mostly played there during the regular season. He struggled out of the gate in 2024 and finished the regular season with a slash line of .189/.255/.311 with four stolen bases, five home runs and 23 RBI across 208 plate appearances.

  • Jorge Mateo SS | ATL

Orioles' Jorge Mateo: Progressing in elbow recovery

Mateo (elbow) has begun hitting in a cage but is still a long shot to be ready by Opening Day, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Mateo is working through his recovery from the UCL reconstruction surgery he underwent on his left elbow in late August. He's upgraded from hitting off a tee to in the cage, but it appears the 29-year-old is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day and could begin the 2025 regular season on the injured list. He appeared in 68 regular-season games for the Orioles in 2024 and posted a slash line of .229/.267/.401 with 13 stolen bases, five home runs and 18 RBI across 208 plate appearances.

  • Josh Kasevich SS | TOR

Blue Jays' Josh Kasevich: Stress reaction in back

Kasevich will be sidelined several weeks after aggravating a stress reaction in his lower back in a game last weekend, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

It's not clear when Kasevich suffered the initial injury, but he's now had a setback. The 24-year-old infielder finished last season at Triple-A Buffalo and will be assigned there once he's healthy enough to play.

  • Wenceel Perez SS | DET

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Battling back tightness

The Tigers announced Friday that Perez is dealing with lower-back tightness but is expected to participate in full baseball activities this weekend, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Perez hasn't seen the field since Sunday due to the injury, but he appears to be trending in the right direction after taking a few days to rest up. If healthy, the 25-year-old has a strong chance to begin the season with a regular role for the Tigers since Matt Vierling (shoulder) will begin the campaign on the injured list.
