  • Kevin Smith DH | NYY

Athletics' Kevin Smith: Sent to Triple-A

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Smith is 0-for-16 at the dish over seven games in June and has just one hit over his last 40 at-bats, so he'll head to the minors to push the reset button. The Athletics have yet to announce a corresponding move.

  • Nick Ahmed SS | TEX

    Diamondbacks' Nick Ahmed: Requires surgery

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Ahmed will undergo surgery on his right shoulder, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

Ahmed missed the start of the season with a shoulder issue and was only able to return for 17 games before heading back to the injured list. His issue evidently won't go away without surgery, and the Diamondbacks are merely hopeful that he'll be able to return this season. Expect Geraldo Perdomo to handle shortstop for most of the rest of the year and potentially the entire campaign.

  • Joey Wendle 2B | ATL

Marlins' Joey Wendle: Starts running again

Marlins manager Don Mattingly revealed Monday that Wendle (hamstring) has resumed baseball activities and has started a running progression, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Wendle's ability to resume on-field work suggests that the platelet-rich plasma injection he received for his strained right hamstring earlier this season has yielded the desired effect. Since Wendle is now in the midst of his second stint on the I0-day injured list this season due to a right hamstring injury, the Marlins will likely proceed cautiously with him before activating him. He doesn't look like a good bet to be activated this week.

  • Josh H. Smith 2B | TEX

Rangers' Josh Smith: Set to take batting practice Monday

Smith (shoulder) plans to take batting practice Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Smith has been on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder sprain since June 4 and is eligible to rejoin the active roster as early as Tuesday. While the 24-year-old appears to be trending in the right direction, he doesn't yet have a firm timetable to return to game action, and it's unclear whether he'll require a rehab assignment.

  • Rays' Wander Franco: Set to begin agility work

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Franco (quadriceps) is scheduled to begin agility work Monday, Brian Hall of MLB.com reports.

A few days earlier, Cash told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that he didn't anticipate Franco would be ready to return from the 10-day injured list this week, so fantasy managers should continue to keep the 21-year-old on their reserve list for now. The impending agility work will mark Franco's first activity since he strained his right quad while running the bases in a May 30 game. Given Franco's long-term importance to the franchise, the Rays may want him to first test his quad in a brief minor-league rehab assignment before activating him from the IL.

  • Pirates' Tucupita Marcano: Gets run in leadoff role

Marcano went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 5-3 loss to Atlanta.

At least against right-handed pitching, the lefty-hitting Marcano appears to have at least temporarily seized the leadoff gig from Ke'Bryan Hayes. The 22-year-old set the table Sunday for the second day in a row and was one of the few bright spots for the Pirates in Atlanta's four-game series sweep, as he produced six hits and scored one run across his 13 at-bats. At least until the Pirates get back Josh VanMeter (finger) or Kevin Newman (groin) back from the injured list, Marcano looks primed to serve as the Pirates' everyday second baseman.

  • Ezequiel Duran SS | TEX

Rangers' Ezequiel Duran: Swats second homer

Duran went 2-for-6 with a three-run home run and was caught stealing in Sunday's 8-6 extra-innings win over the White Sox.

It looked like Duran's three-run homer in the top of the 11th might be the game-winning knock, but the White Sox tied it in the bottom half. It was the second home run for Duran, who has started every game (seven at SS, one at 2B) since being added to the roster, going 10-for-33 during his first stint in the majors. The stolen base attempt was Duran's first as a member of the Rangers; the infielder stole 19 bags (caught nine times) in the minors last season and had seven (caught once) at Double-A Frisco in 2022.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Homers in three-hit effort

Witt went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 10-7 loss to the Orioles.

Witt went deep in the seventh inning off Orioles reliever Keegan Akin. An off day Saturday did nothing to stall Witt's burgeoning hot streak -- he's 10-for-17 (.588) in his last five games, including three extra-base hits. He's lifted his season slash line to .244/.291/.456 with eight homers, 30 RBI, 34 runs scored, 10 stolen bases, 14 doubles and four triples through 57 contests.

  • Willy Adames SS | SF

Brewers' Willy Adames: Drives in three runs

Adames went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI in Sunday's 4-1 win over Washington.

Adames provided most of Milwaukee's offense Sunday, knocking an RBI double in the third inning before taking Evan Lee deep for a two-run shot in the fifth. He's now 3-for-20 with two homers since returning from the injured list. Sunday was his first multi-hit performance since May 5 and it bumped his season slash line to .200/.290/.467 with 28 RBI and 18 extra-base hits.

  • Miguel Rojas 2B | LAD

Marlins' Miguel Rojas: Registers steal in loss

Rojas went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 9-4 loss to the Astros.

Rojas singled and stole second in the fourth inning, ending an 0-for-13 skid at the plate. The shortstop's gone 7-for-36 (.194) through 11 games in June, but he's retained a starting role with Joey Wendle (hamstring) and Brian Anderson (back) sidelined. After notching 13 steals in 16 tries last year, Rojas has just two thefts in three attempts so far in 2022. He's added a .213/.280/.320 slash line with four home runs, 13 RBI, 17 runs scored, four doubles and a triple in 50 games.
