The Cardinals will shut Winn (knee) down for the rest of the season, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

After being diagnosed with a meniscus tear in his right knee Wednesday, the initial expectation was that Winn would play through the injury and wait until the offseason to undergo surgery. However, manager Oliver Marmol said Friday that the 23-year-old infielder hasn't been recovering as well as the team had hoped, so the Cardinals will pull the plug on his season and use Thomas Saggese as their primary shortstop going forward. Winn will close the book on the 2025 campaign with a .253/.310/.363 slash line alongside nine homers, 51 RBI, 72 runs scored and nine steals across 537 plate appearances.

Ritter isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against San Diego.

Friday will mark the fourth straight start Ritter has missed while he continues to battle an undisclosed issue. His absence will give Orlando Arcia a start at second base against southpaw JP Sears.

Neto (hand) isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Neto seemed to have trouble with his hand after taking a swing Thursday, so the Angels will sit him down Friday as a precaution. Oswald Peraza will pick up a start at shortstop as a result, opening up first base for Logan Davidson.

An awkward swing from Baez in the second inning resulted in the ball deflecting off his forehead, immediately prompting his removal from the game. The Tigers will almost certainly evaluate the 32-year-old for a concussion; meanwhile, Trey Sweeney will take over as Detroit's shortstop.

Winn was initially due to make his return to the lineup Friday after sitting out three games due to a meniscus tear that he plans to play through. Instead, he'll take another day off while Thomas Saggese starts at shortstop.

Bogaerts (foot) took on-field batting practice Friday and believes he is ahead of schedule, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Bogaerts took on-field batting practice for the first time since being placed on the injured list Aug. 29 due to a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. He has been progressing well since suffering the injury and could be on track to return before the end of the regular season. Jake Cronenworth and Jose Iglesias (hand) have been handling most of the shortstop work since Bogaerts went down.

Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that he doesn't think Volpe (shoulder) will be able to start any of the Yankees' games against Boston this weekend, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Volpe received a cortisone shot in his shoulder Wednesday, and while he could be available off the bench at some point over the weekend, he isn't expected to be part of the starting nine until Monday at the earliest. Jose Caballero should serve as the Yankees' primary option at shortstop during the series.

Winn (knee) is batting sixth and playing shortstop during Friday's game against the Brewers, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Pena is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta.

Pena will get the night off after making 24 consecutive starts at shortstop. He went 24-for-101 (.238) with two home runs, seven doubles and three stolen bases during that stretch. Mauricio Dubon will bat ninth and play shortstop Friday.

Volpe (shoulder) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game in Boston.

Volpe received a cortisone shot Wednesday for a nagging left shoulder injury and will miss a third straight start. It's unclear whether he'll be available off the bench, but he's not expected to need a stint on the 10-day injured list. Jose Caballero will again play shortstop for the Yankees on Friday.
