Pallante (10-5) picked up the win Friday, allowing five hits and a walk over 5.2 scoreless innings in a 17-1 rout of the Cubs. He struck out two.

The Cardinals backed Pallante by scoring multiple runs in five straight innings beginning in the second frame as the right-hander breezed through his afternoon, getting lifted after 102 pitches (61 strikes) and coming one out shy of his seventh quality start of the season. Pallante has given up two runs or fewer in five of six starts since the beginning of June, posting a 2.68 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB over 37 innings during that stretch, and his 10 wins tie him for first among all big-league starting pitchers this season with Chase Burns, Cristopher Sanchez and Justin Wrobleski. Pallante will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Brewers.

The Padres recalled Jacob from Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Jacob will return to the majors as the roster replacement for Randy Vasquez, who landed on the injured list Friday with an ankle injury. Jacob has given up two runs in two MLB innings this season, but he's put up a 3.71 ERA and 1.12 WHIP through 34 innings in the minors. He'll likely be limited to low-leverage situations with the Padres.

The Padres reinstated Campusano (toe) from the injured list Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

With Freddy Fermin (head) landing on the injured list Friday, Campusano will return to the active roster to replenish San Diego's catcher depth. The 27-year-old backstop has been on the shelf since May 7 with a fractured toe, but he was cleared to begin playing in rehab games Tuesday and subsequently went 2-for-6 with two walks, a homer and an additional RBI. He and Rodolfo Duran will likely split starts behind the dish until Fermin is healthy.

The Padres placed Fermin on the 10-day injured list Friday with a head bruise, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

It appears Fermin avoided a concussion after taking a foul tip off his mask Thursday, but he will ultimately still have to spend time on the IL, and the timing of the injury means he will be on the shelf through the All-Star break. Luis Campusano (toe) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move and will presumably split reps behind the plate with Rodolfo Duran for the remainder of the first half.

The Padres placed Vasquez on the 15-day injured list Friday with a bruised right ankle, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

After taking a comebacker off his ankle Thursday, Vasquez fainted while on his way to get X-rays, leading to his hospitalization. He was discharged from the hospital Friday, and tests on his ankle came back negative, but the Padres will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the first half. Alek Jacob will come up from Triple-A El Paso to give the Padres extra bullpen depth while they sort out their rotation plans.

Manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Smith (neck) began hitting in the cages Thursday and has also begun throwing, Jack Harris of the California Post reports.

Smith has been on the injured list since June 11 with neck inflammation and isn't expected to return before the All-Star break, but his return to hitting and throwing are both good signs that he's finally starting to turn a corner in his recovery. He will almost certainly require a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the active roster.

Joyce (shoulder) faced hitters in a live bullpen session Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

It's the first time Joyce has faced hitters since being shut down from throwing in mid-May. This is a promising sign for the right-hander as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery that he underwent in July of 2025. A clearer timeline for Joyce's return to the majors should emerge once he's been given the green light to embark on a rehab assignment.

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said Friday that Trout (hamstring) is improving in his recovery and is "really close" to returning from the 10-day injured list, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Trout continues to progress his recovery from a hamstring injury that landed him on the 10-day IL in mid-June. Per Greg Beacham of The Associated Press, Trout is expected to hit on the field this weekend and is on track to be back with the Angels early next week against the Rangers. Prior to being placed on the IL, Trout had an .866 OPS with seven steals, 17 home runs and 36 RBI across 335 plate appearances.

Taylor isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Dodgers.

Taylor has notched a base hit in each of his last four games, but the Friars will keep him on the bench to begin Friday's contest. Gavin Sheets will start in left field while Taylor sits, putting Manny Machado in the DH spot and Sung-Mun Song at third base.

Fermin (head) isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Dodgers.

Fermin was pulled from Thursday's game after taking a foul tip off his mask in the fifth inning, and he'll remain on the bench to begin Friday's contest. Rodolfo Duran will fill in as the Padres' catcher and bat ninth.
