Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Scherzer (back/side) played catch Monday and could throw a bullpen session as soon as Tuesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Scherzer threw a bullpen session as recently as last Monday, but the Blue Jays briefly shut him down a few days later after he experienced left side discomfort that was seemingly related to the back spasms that forced him to the injured list June 17. The right-hander received a cortisone shot Friday and has responded well to the injection, so he'll start the process of getting stretched back out. Scherzer could have a realistic shot at returning to the Toronto rotation at some point next week if he avoids any further setbacks while building up.

Adames (back) is not in the Giants' starting lineup against the Diamondbacks on Monday, Evan Webeck of the California Post reports.

Adames was removed from Sunday's game in the eighth inning due to lower-back spasms. The issue is still bothering the 30-year-old shortstop and will keep him out of lineup for Monday's series opener, and he's also unlikely to be available as a pinch runner or hitter, per Webeck. Casey Schmitt will start at shortstop and bat third.

Schmitt (illness) will start at shortstop and bat third against the Diamondbacks on Monday, Evan Webeck of the California Post reports.

Schmitt was a late scratch for Sunday's series finale against the Phillies due to an illness. He's been given the green light to play Monday and will fill in at shortstop for Willy Adames, the latter of whom left Sunday's game due to back spasms.

Garcia has been on the shelf all season after requiring surgery last September to remove scar tissue around his right elbow, but biceps and neck nerve symptoms were cited as the reason behind the Blue Jays' decision to pull him off his rehab assignment last week. The right-hander appears to have responded well to several days of rest, prompting the Blue Jays to clear him to begin throwing again. Given that he's dealt with multiple setbacks this season -- Garcia was also pulled off a rehab assignment in May due to elbow soreness -- he could be built up slowly before the Blue Jays clear him to report back to a minor-league affiliate.

Bauers is absent from the lineup for Monday's game versus the Reds.

The left-handed-hitting Bauers has started often versus lefty hurlers this season, but he'll begin Monday's festivities on the bench as the Reds send southpaw Nick Lodolo to the bump. Andrew Vaughn will be at first base, and Sal Frelick will patrol right field.

Edman is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Athletics, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

After starting in left field in each of the Dodgers' three games over the weekend, Edman will shift to the bench Monday with Teoscar Hernandez (hamstring) occupying the position in his return from the 10-day injured list. Though the presence of Hernandez will likely limit Edman's opportunities in the outfield moving forward, the 31-year-old utility player could displace Alex Freeland as the Dodgers' primary option at second base. Neither Edman nor Freeland will cover the keystone Monday, however, as Miguel Rojas will draw the start.

Yelich is absent from the lineup for Monday's tilt against the Reds.

With southpaw Nick Lodolo toeing the rubber for the Reds, the Brewers will give the left-handed-hitting Yelich a breather. Gary Sanchez is occupying the designated hitter slot and batting fifth in the series opener.

The Athletics placed Suarez on the paternity leave list Monday.

Suarez will likely miss the entirety of the series against the Dodgers before rejoining the Athletics bullpen for the weekend series versus the Marlins. The lefty has logged a 4.01 ERA and 24:6 K:BB over 24.2 innings for the Athletics this season.

Vientos will start at designated hitter and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Blue Jays.

He'll stick in the starting nine for the third straight game and for the fifth time in six games, with the recent demotion of MJ Melendez to Triple-A Syracuse as well as Marcus Semien's (hip) move to the injured list having opened up more playing time Vientos. The 26-year-old has yet to capitalize on the extra opportunities, having gone 1-for-13 with a solo home run and two walks over the last five games to bring his OPS down to .638 for the season.

The Athletics recalled Hernaiz from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.

Hernaiz is back in the majors and will give the Athletics depth in the infield after the team placed Jacob Wilson (thumb) on the 10-day injured list Monday. The 25-year-old posted a .606 OPS across 134 major-league plate appearances prior to being optioned to Las Vegas.
