Yankees' J.C. Escarra: Sent back to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Escarra to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

The Yankees sent Escarra down to the minors earlier this month but were forced to bring him back a day later once Austin Wells (head) landed on the IL. Now that Wells is set to return to the active roster Sunday, Escarra will move back to Triple-A after posting a .493 OPS in 91 plate appearances with the Pinstripes. Ali Sanchez will remain as the backup catcher in the Bronx.

  • David Peterson SP | CHC

Mets' David Peterson: Tapped for start Sunday

Peterson will start Sunday's game against the Phillies in Philadelphia, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports.

Peterson has surrendered nine earned runs in just 6.2 innings across his last two appearances out of the bullpen, but the Mets will nonetheless turn to him to fill the open spot in their rotation in the series finale. The Phillies have turned in a weak .670 OPS across their last 10 contests, but the 30-year-old southpaw's recent performance puts a low ceiling on his fantasy appeal.

  • Geoff Hartlieb RP | ATH

Athletics' Geoff Hartlieb: Joins big-league bullpen

The Athletics recalled Hartlieb from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

With Mark Leiter (hip) headed for the injured list, the A's will turn to Hartlieb to plug the hole in their bullpen. The 32-year-old righty has spent the entire season at Las Vegas, posting a 3.48 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across 33.2 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He's likely set for middle-relief work as long as he's in the majors.

  • Mark Leiter RP | ATH

Athletics' Mark Leiter: Moves to injured list

The Athletics placed Leiter on the 15-day injured list Saturday, retroactive to Thursday, due to a right hip impingement, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Leiter has given up just one earned run in his last 14 innings, but the A's will be without his services for at least a couple of weeks while he recovers from a hip injury. Geoff Hartlieb was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to replenish the team's bullpen depth.

  • Tim Tawa LF | ARI

Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Recalled from Reno

The Diamondbacks recalled Tawa from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.

Tawa was sent down to Triple-A at the beginning of June after posting a .519 OPS across 70 plate appearances, but he's slashed .351/.439/.772 with five homers, 16 RBI and 13 runs scored in 15 games at Reno. He'll now rejoin the Diamondbacks as the replacement for the injured Jordan Lawlar (hamstring), though Tawa will likely be limited to a bench role while Jorge Barrosa receives an uptick in playing time.

  • Philip Abner RP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Philip Abner: Back with D-backs

The Diamondbacks recalled Abner from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.

Abner will return to the big leagues to replace Michael Soroka, who landed on the injured list Saturday with a glute strain. Abner has given up seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings with the big club this season and will likely be limited to low-leverage situations while in the majors.

  • Mike Soroka SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Michael Soroka: Placed on injured list

The Diamondbacks placed Soroka on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a strained left glute.

Soroka suffered the injury while warming up for the second inning of Friday's start against the Twins, putting a premature end to his evening. He'll now be forced to sit out through at least the beginning of July, though he may still be able to make a few more starts before the All-Star break, depending on how quickly he can recover. Philip Abner was recalled from Triple-A Reno to give Arizona extra bullpen depth while the team sorts out its rotation plans.

  • Jordan Lawlar LF | ARI

Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Lands on injured list

The Diamondbacks placed Lawlar on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain.

Lawlar had to come out of Friday's game after legging out an infield single, and he was later diagnosed with a hamstring strain. He'll now spend at least the next 10 days on the shelf, leaving Jorge Barrosa as the favorite to take over as Arizona's primary center fielder. Tim Tawa was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

  • Jacob Bird RP | NYY

Yankees' Jake Bird: Sent down after Saturday's game

The Yankees optioned Bird to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Bird pitched scoreless innings in both Friday's and Saturday's contests, lowering his ERA to 4.88 through 24 innings on the season. He'll now end up as the roster casualty necessary to create space in preparation for Elmer Rodriguez's promotion Sunday. Bird is likely to return to the Bronx at some point this season when the Yankees need a fresh arm in the bullpen.

  • Yankees' Elmer Rodriguez: Starting Sunday

The Yankees will recall Rodriguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Sunday's game against the Reds at Yankee Stadium, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

In an effort to give their starters some extra rest, the Yankees will bring up Rodriguez for a spot start Sunday. The 22-year-old righty has already started three games for the Yankees this season and owns a 4.15 ERA and 1.85 WHIP through 13 innings. He'll be welcomed back to the majors by a Reds offense that has put up a .707 OPS across its last 10 games.
