  • Joe Burrow QB | CIN

Bengals' Joe Burrow: Some preseason action possible

While Burrow (knee) will not play in the preseason opener against Tampa Bay on Sunday, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor didn't rule him out for the entirety of the preseason, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Burrow is still on track to start Week 1 of the regular season. "I'm not ruling anything out for the further games," Taylor said. "All I'm ready to speak on is Week 1. Those are the decisions we've made. It will be a quick turnaround next week for Washington, so we'll make those decisions relatively early in the week. And then Miami, we've got a lot more time before we play that third game."

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Likely playing Saturday

Coach Andy Reid suggested Mahomes and other starters will play the first quarter in Saturday's preseason opener against San Francisco, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.

Reid didn't actually mention Mahomes by name, so it's possible the QB could follow a different plan than other starters, though Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce would also figure to make early exits if Mahomes were to do so. In any case, Reid's general plan is to play starters in the first quarter, second-stringers in the second quarter, third-stringers in the third quarter and everyone else in the fourth.

  • Easton Stick QB | ATL

Chargers' Easton Stick: Second in line Saturday

Stick will see the field after Chase Daniel starts Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.

Stick has only appeared in one regular-season contest since joining the Chargers as a fifth-round pick in 2019. Daniel looks like the favorite to serve as the backup to top quarterback Justin Herbert this season, in which case Stick could be set for another season handling the No. 3 role.

  • Marcus Mariota QB | WAS

Raiders' Marcus Mariota: May not play Saturday

Mariota may be unavailable for Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks due to leg soreness, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.

Coach Jon Gruden reportedly described Mariota as questionable, while hinting that the backup quarterback may be trending in the wrong direction for Saturday. If Mariota is indeed unable to play in the contest, Nathan Peterman and Case Cookus could see increased opportunities for preseason run.

  • Zach Wilson QB | NO

Jets' Zach Wilson: Playing two series Saturday

Wilson will play two series during Saturday's preseason opener against the Giants, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Wilson will make his preseason debut Saturday, but with Giants coach Joe Judge having said that he will handle the first preseason game the way teams used to handle the last one, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Wilson may be facing backups in the opposing defense. Reports surrounding the rookie No. 2 overall pick's performance in camp have been mostly positive to date, though he did struggle in front of fans last Sunday, throwing two interceptions without a touchdown.

  • Justin Herbert QB | LAC

Chargers' Justin Herbert: Won't play in preseason

Herbert is not in line to see any preseason action, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Coach Brandon Staley will elect to play it safe with his young franchise QB, with an eye toward having Herbert healthy and fresh for Week 1 action. As a result, Chase Daniel, Easton Stick and K.J. Costello are slated to share the team's preseason signal-caller reps.

  • Trey Lance QB | LAC

49ers' Trey Lance: Will see action Saturday

Lance is set to finish off the first half of Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs after Jimmy Garoppolo takes the first series, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Lance remains firmly in the No. 2 spot in San Francisco's quarterback room, as Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports is mirrored by the team's first unofficial depth chart. With Jimmy Garoppolo on track to start Week 1 under center, the rookie No. 3 overall pick still has plenty of ground to make up. If Lance is able to show off his explosiveness and arm talent in the first preseason action of his career, it could help to close that gap.

  • Dak Prescott QB | DAL

Cowboys' Dak Prescott: MRI scheduled for Monday

Prescott (right shoulder) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, Mac Engel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

The fact that the QB is getting an MRI isn't indicative of a setback, with the report adding that Prescott, who continues to progress, stated Wednesday that if the regular season were to commence this weekend he would play. Though Dallas' franchise signal-caller indicated that he hopes to see action versus the Texans on Aug. 21, Engel suggests that the team may err on the side of caution and hold Prescott out through its exhibition slate.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Set to start Saturday

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo will start Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs but will likely only handle one series, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Garoppolo is listed as the starter on San Francisco's first unofficial depth chart, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News, and he remains to favorite to start Week 1 under center. As preseason action approaches, the question is how many opportunities rookie first-round pick Trey Lance will get to showcase his explosiveness, and whether Garoppolo can avoid making mistakes. After Garoppolo opens Saturday's exhibition match, Lance is expected to finish out the first half.

  • Daniel Jones QB | IND

Giants' Daniel Jones: Won't play vs. Jets

Jones won't play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Jets, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.

Jones figures to be joined on the sideline by a bunch of other starters, as Giants coach Joe Judge said he'll handle the first preseason game the way teams used to handle the last one. That could mean we see Jones in the second and third preseason games, though it's also possible the Giants restrict him to a lone appearance. While the team upgraded its WR room significantly this spring, the offensive line remains a likely weakness.
