  • John Wolford QB | MIN

Buccaneers' John Wolford: Test results encouraging

Coach Todd Bowles said Sunday that Wolford (neck) is " feeling better" and that his medical tests "came out pretty [well]," Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.

Wolford suffered a neck injury during Sunday's preseason contest against the Jets and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. The Buccaneers announced shortly thereafter that Wolford had movement in all of his extremities, and per Bowles the team will now "just see how he recovers." Expect Tampa Bay to add a third-string option behind Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask in the near future.

  • Trey Lance QB | LAC

49ers' Trey Lance: Mixed results Saturday

Lance completed 12 of 18 pass attempts for 173 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason win over the Broncos. He wound up losing two yards on his four rushing attempts.

Lance was the third quarterback to enter the contest following the return of starter Brock Purdy (elbow), who ran the opening drive before giving way to Sam Darnold. This was a planned move by head coach Kyle Shanahan after Lance played the entire first half last week while Darnold was limited to the third quarter. The 2021 third overall pick got to flash his arm strength on a couple of big completions downfield while also leading the game-winning drive as time expired. It wasn't all roses for the 23-year-old though, as his interception came on an ill-advised pass into a crowd of defenders on a broken screen play. Neither Lance nor Darnold has pulled away in this backup competition heading into the team's third and final preseason game against the Chargers on Friday.

  • Sam Darnold QB | SEA

49ers' Sam Darnold: Gets extended look Saturday

Darnold completed 11 of 14 pass attempts for 109 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's preseason win over Denver.

Darnold entered the game after starter Brock Purdy (elbow) returned from injury and ran San Francisco's opening drive, coming in ahead of Trey Lance as planned. However, Darnold remained in the game after halftime to presumably make up for the drive lost to Purdy. When that drive was shortened by an interception that was no fault of his own, Darnold trotted back out to end his day on a positive note with a touchdown pass. Lance also had a touchdown pass and a pick Saturday, keeping the competition for the backup job in San Francisco a dead heat heading into the final week of the preseason.

  • Russell Wilson QB | NYG

Broncos' Russell Wilson: Plays just one drive Saturday

Wilson completed three of his six pass attempts for 24 yards and rushed for 25 yards on three carries in Saturday's preseason tilt against San Francisco.

Head coach Sean Payton said that Wilson and the starters would see 20 to 24 snaps against the 49ers, but he wound up limiting his starting quarterback to the opening drive (10 plays). There is no injury to report here, as Payton may simply have changed his mind mid-game. Wilson didn't do much from the pocket, but he did break off a 17-yard scamper, something we have seen less of from the 34-year-old in the later stages of his career. Wilson saw his stock drop farther than any player following his putrid 2022 campaign, so expectations should be lowered heading into the second year of a five-year, $245 million contract.

  • Geno Smith QB | NYJ

Seahawks' Geno Smith: Crisp in preseason debut

Smith completed five of six passes for 46 yards and rushed once for two yards in the Seahawks' 22-14 preseason win over the Cowboys on Saturday night.

The veteran signal-caller got his first game action of the summer in, playing two series and leading Seattle to a field goal on the latter drive. Smith's completions included connections with incumbents Tyler Lockett and Will Dissly, as well as rookie first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Whether or not head coach Pete Carroll will risk his starting quarterback in next Saturday afternoon's preseason finale against the Packers remains to be seen.

  • Jaren Hall QB | SEA

    Vikings' Jaren Hall: Shows improvement

Hall completed four of seven passes for 49 yards in Saturday's 24-16 preseason loss to the Titans.

Hall played in the second half of the game, following Nick Mullens. He showed some improved accuracy compared to his first preseason appearance, though the majority of his attempts came in the short areas of the field. Hall is likely to begin the season as the Vikings' third quarterback.

  • Rams' Stetson Bennett: Extended action again Saturday

Bennett completed 15 of 24 passes for 142 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushed once for four yards in the Rams' 34-17 preseason loss to the Raiders on Saturday night.

Bennett didn't quite put up the same caliber of numbers as he did during the preseason-opening win over the Chargers last Saturday night, but he still logged valuable reps and put together a solid performance. The fact the rookie fourth-round pick has been given such an extensive look over the first two preseason games could theoretically mean he's being considered for the No. 2 job, but the more likely scenario is that head coach Sean McVay might be contemplating keeping both Brett Rypien and Bennett on the final roster behind Matthew Stafford.

  • Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo: Crisp in brief action Saturday

Garoppolo completed all four pass attempts for 39 yards in the Raiders' 34-17 preseason win over the Rams on Saturday night.

Garoppolo was in for the Raiders' opening possession and led a crisp nine-play, 68-yard march, during which he completed passes to four different targets. It was the veteran's official Raiders debut and, consequently, the first opportunity to prove his health after last season's foot issues. Garoppolo gave way to Brian Hoyer after that first drive as head coach Josh McDaniels clearly looked to limit his exposure, but it's certainly possible he gets more run in the preseason finale against the Cowboys next Saturday night.

  • Mac Jones QB | SF

Patriots' Mac Jones: Starts Saturday's preseason win

Jones made his preseason debut against Green Bay on Saturday, completing six of nine pass attempts for 52 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in a 21-17 exhibition win.

Jones had a clean tune-up appearance from the pocket, leading an opening drive that Rhamondre Stevenson finished off with a rushing touchdown. The 25-year-old coughed up a fumble while getting sacked on the final play of his scheduled appearance, giving way to Bailey Zappe and the reserves after completing three drives. Jones will attempt to right the ship after a sophomore slump sapped his fantasy value heading into this year's drafts.

  • P.J. Walker QB | SEA

Bears' PJ Walker: Quiet outing Saturday

Walker completed one of four passes for six yards during Saturday's 24-17 preseason loss to the Colts.

The Bears sat most of their starters, including quarterback Justin Fields, in preseason Week 2. As a result, Walker directed the offense for the first two possessions, which resulted in no points and a pair of punts. He also was sacked twice for a combined loss of nine yards. He seems to be secure in his standing as Chicago's No. 2 QB, but Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent still are around to challenge Walker.
