Packers' Aaron Rodgers: Jets optimistic after meeting with QB

After meeting with Rodgers earlier this week, the Jets are reportedly becoming more confident in their chances of securing the quarterback, according to ESPN's Dianna Russini.

The report suggests that the Jets and Packers have had conversations with regard to potential trade compensation in the event that the 39-year-old decides that he wants to move on from the franchise that drafted him in 2005, but at this stage, Rodgers has yet to make any announcements regarding his intentions for the coming NFL season. With that in mind, it still remains possible that Rodgers could either elect to remain with Green Bay or retire.

  • Kyle Trask QB | TB

Buccaneers' Kyle Trask: Obstacles in path of starting job

Trask faces some challenges in his quest to become the Buccaneers' starting quarterback in 2023, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

General manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles unsurprisingly gave Trask public votes of confidence when speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, but the largely unproven 2021 second-round pick has some hurdles to clear in his bid to succeed Tom Brady as the Buccaneers' starting signal-caller. Stroud points out that Trask will not only be tasked with learning a new offense, but will also be working with a first-time play-caller in new offensive coordinator Dave Canales as well as a rookie position coach in Thad Lewis. Additionally, a young but experienced veteran such as Drew Lock or Baker Mayfield is likely to eventually be added to the quarterback room, which could be a challenge Trask isn't ready to overcome.

  • E.J. Perry QB | JAC

Texans' E.J. Perry: Claimed by Texans

The Texans claimed Perry off waivers from the Jaguars on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

After being cut by Jacksonville earlier this week, Perry was able to find a new home within the AFC South. He'll try to push for a spot on the 53-man roster spot this offseason, assuming he even makes it to training camp with the Texans. Perry has never attempted an NFL pass since entering the professional ranks last spring.

  • Daniel Jones QB | IND

Giants' Daniel Jones: Gets four-year pact with New York

Jones and the Giants agreed Tuesday on a four-year contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Per Pelissero, negotiations on Jones' deal came down to the wire ahead of the league deadline to assign franchise tags. The contract is reportedly worth $160 million, with $35 million in incentives. Now that the team has come to terms with Jones, the Giants are in line to use their tag on running back Saquon Barkley.

  • E.J. Perry QB | JAC

    E.J. Perry: Waived Tuesday

Perry was waived by the Jaguars on Tuesday.

Perry spent the entirety of the past season on the Jaguars' practice squad and was not elevated for a single game. Despite signing a reserve/future contract back in January, the 2022 undrafted free agent's release should not come as a big surprise as he was buried on the depth chart behind Trevor Lawrence, C.J. Beathard, and Nathan Rourke. Perry will now test the open market and will hope to find a better opportunity elsewhere.

  • Lamar Jackson QB | BAL

Ravens' Lamar Jackson: Gets franchise tag

The Ravens assigned their franchise tag to Jackson (knee) on Tuesday.

In a statement released by the team, general manager Eric DeCosta noted that the Ravens plan to continue to negotiate with Jackson in hopes of reaching a long-term deal with the quarterback this offseason. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the $32.4 million franchise tag is non-exclusive, which means that the signal-caller can negotiate with other teams. The Ravens, however, retain the right to match any offer sheet Jackson signs, or alternatively accept two first-round draft picks as compensation.

  • Aaron Rodgers QB | PIT

Packers' Aaron Rodgers: Reportedly permitted to speak with Jets

The Packers reportedly have granted Rodgers permission to speak with the Jets, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, some conversations regarding a potential trade of the 39-year-old signal caller are expected to take place Tuesday. That said, at this stage Rodgers has yet to announce what he plans to do this coming season, with Graziano noting that if the QB elects to continue his playing career it's still possible he could decide that he'd prefer to remain with the Packers. Moreover, Rodgers' current contract with Green Bay would presumably need to be addressed before any possible deal sending him elsewhere could proceed.

  • Geno Smith QB | NYJ

Seahawks' Geno Smith: Lands big payday

The Seahawks and Smith agreed to a three-year, $105 million contract extension Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

A second-round pick of the Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft, Smith flamed out in his initial stop in the NFL and served as a journeyman until winning a quarterback battle against Drew Lock last summer in the post-Russell Wilson era in Seattle. Smith proceeded to put together an impressive campaign, completing 69.8 percent of his passes for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while also running for 366 yards and one more score. With wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett and running back Kenneth Walker also under contract with the Seahawks for the next three seasons, the 32-year-old Smith has the skill-position talent at his disposal to continue to put up fruitful stat lines.

  • Brock Purdy QB | SF

49ers' Brock Purdy: Surgery scheduled this week

Purdy (elbow) is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Purdy's initially scheduled elbow procedure had to be postponed due to swelling two weeks ago, but the torn UCL in his right throwing elbow now is set to be addressed Friday. After completing his surgery, Purdy will be able to begin the preliminary steps of what projects to be a lengthy recovery. There's an amount of uncertainty surrounding the 49ers' quarterback room, as Trey Lance (ankle) is recovering from a fractured fibula and ligament disruption in his right ankle suffered Week 2. Lance, however, is expected to be 100 percent for OTAs, meaning Purdy could have to play catch-up.

  • Derek Carr QB | NO

Saints' Derek Carr: Lands four-year deal with Saints

Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Carr's contract includes $100 million in total guarantees, with $70 million effectively fully guaranteed. He thus becomes the first big-name quarterback of the 2023 offseason to find a new home, just weeks before his 32nd birthday. It remains to be seen whether the NFL future of Michael Thomas (toe) involves any more time with New Orleans, but the likes of Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave represent solid offensive playmakers for Carr. The four-time Pro Bowler threw for 3,522 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 15 games with the Raiders last season. His passing yardage total was the third-lowest mark of his nine-year career.
