Winners of eight in a row. Owners of the league's best record. An NBA-leading offensive rating. The Cleveland Cavaliers are absolutely, 100%, without a doubt worthy of the No. 1 spot in the first 2025 edition of the NBA Power Rankings. But there's just one problem -- the Oklahoma City Thunder.
OKC has rattled off 13 straight wins (as long as you, like the NBA regular-season standings, don't count the NBA Cup final), has the league's best defense, and has outscored opponents by a wider average margin than any other NBA team. It's like when Chris Farley gets mad at David Spade in "Black Sheep" (their slightly inferior, yet still underrated follow-up to "Tommy Boy") for his struggles in checkers: "Yeah, well, it's kind of easy to win when you NEVER MOVE YOUR BACK ROW! EVER!"
The Cavs are executing a near-perfect season, but the Thunder just aren't budging, and therefore retain the top spot in the rankings to start the new year.
Speaking of near-perfect, the Thunder will run into another streaking team on Friday night, the New York Knicks, who have won their last nine games. As a result, New York has moved up two spots to No. 4 as they prepare for what should be one of the most entertaining games of the young season in Oklahoma City.
And if it's entertainment you seek, look no further than Los Angeles, where LeBron James is dazzling despite turning 40 years old earlier this week. All he did was put up 38 points and eight assists in Thursday's win over the Trail Blazers, making 7 of 10 3-pointers in the process. It's become cliché to use the whole, "appreciate this guy while you can" line, but come on -- there's really nothing else to say at this point.
