  • Texans' Case Keenum: Under contract for 2024

Keenum has one year remaining on his contract heading into the offseason. He completed 34 of 53 passes for 291 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions in two regular-season games during the 2023 season. Keenum was locked in as the third-string quarterback when C.J. Stroud was healthy, but when Houston's No. 1 quarterback sat out in Weeks 15 and 16 due to a concussion, head coach DeMeco Ryans opted for Keenum over Davis Mills as the starter. Both backups are under contract for the upcoming season, but Keenum would carry a dead cap hit of just $1.5 million if he were to be released, meaning his roster spot is far from guaranteed.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Emergency QB for Week 18

Keenum (coach's decision) is listed as inactive for Saturday's game against the Colts, but he will serve as the emergency third quarterback, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports. Keenum will the the QB3 for the second straight week after starting in Weeks 15 and 16. He'll only enter Saturday's game if both C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills are forced to leave due to injury.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Manages Houston to win

Keenum completed 23 of 36 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 19-16 win over Tennessee. Keenum drew the start with C.J. Stroud (concussion) sidelined and overcame a poor first half, during which he threw for only 83 yards and also had a pick-six. His overall stat line remained relatively uninspiring, but he led a pair of late drives to deliver a win. The first came late in the fourth quarter, when Keenum went 5-for-6 for 56 yards and a three-yard passing touchdown. He then completed a key pass late in overtime to set up the game-winning field goal. While Stroud still needs to clear concussion protocols, he is likely to be available for a Week 16 matchup against the Browns, which would shift Keenum back to the bench.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Week 15 start awaits

Keenum is in line to start Sunday's game against the Titans with C.J. Stroud (concussion) ruled out for the contest, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports. The Texans initially listed Stroud as doubtful for the Week 15 contest following the release of Friday's injury report, but the quarterback was subsequently downgraded to out Saturday after he was unable to clear the five-step concussion protocol. Stroud won't accompany the team to Tennessee and will continue his recovery in Houston while Keenum -- who was inactive for Houston's first 13 games -- picks up his first NFL start since 2021, when he was a member of the Browns. After serving as Stroud's top backup all season and coming on in relief of Stroud in last week's 30-6 loss to the Jets, Davis Mills proceeded to split first-team reps in practice with Keenum throughout the week, but Mills will ultimately remain in the No. 2 role while Keenum draws the starting nod.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Appears set to start Sunday

Keenum is expected to start Sunday's game against the Titans with C.J. Stroud (concussion) listed as doubtful for the Week 15 contest, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Head coach DeMeco Ryans was non-committal on a Week 15 starter following Friday's practice, noting that both Mills and Keenum "have prepared this [whole] week, just like every position." However, Wilson's report suggests the Texans are planning on turning the offense over to Keenum -- who reportedly took the majority of the first-team snaps during practices this week -- over Mills. Though the 35-year-old Keenum has been inactive as the Texans' emergency No. 3 quarterback for each of the team's first 13 games of the season, he possesses a larger body of NFL experience than Mills, a third-year signal-caller. Over his 11 seasons spanning stops with the Texans, Rams, Vikings, Broncos, Washington, Browns and Bills, Keenum has completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 6.8 yards per attempt and 78:48 TD:INT.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Healthy ahead of Week 13

Keenum (calf) did not appear on Houston's injury report Wednesday. Keenum was unavailable for the Texans' 24-21 loss to the Jaguars in Week 12 due to a calf injury, but he now appears to be ready to go for Sunday's matchup with the Broncos. The quarterback will likely step back into his role as the team's third option behind starter C.J. Stroud and primary backup Davis Mills.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Questionable for Sunday

Keenum (calf) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Jaguars. The veteran quarterback was unable to practice all week with a calf issue, but he still has a shot at suiting up for Sunday's contest. Even if Keenum is active for Week 12, he'll remain behind both C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills on the Texans' depth chart, and he'll likely serve as the team's emergency No. 3 QB.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Won't be active

Keenum (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Colts. Keenum won't be considered part of the active roster for Sunday, with Davis Mills entrenched as the No. 2 option behind starter C.J. Stroud. However, Keenum will likely still be dressed as the team's emergency option at quarterback.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: Absent from practice

Keenum didn't finish Saturday's practice and was not on the field for Sunday's session, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports. The quarterback was seen with a sleeve on his left leg at the end of practice. This development sheds light as to why Houston signed quarterback E.J. Perry on Sunday. Perry can operate as a third QB while Keenum is unavailable.

  • Texans' Case Keenum: To sign two-year deal with Texans

Keenum agreed to terms Monday on a two-year contract with the Texans, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The 35-year-old Keenum played his college ball at Houston and is going back home to compete for a backup job with the Texans. There is still a lot to be sorted out at the quarterback spot in Houston, as the Texans are fully expected to use the No. 2 overall pick in next month's draft on a passer. Davis Mills also remains on the roster.

  • Bills' Case Keenum: Plays little as No. 2 QB

Keenum completed just two of seven passes for eight yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in spot duty while appearing in two games during the 2022 season. Keenum was almost tossed into the spotlight twice in 2022 -- once when Josh Allen suffered a fairly serious elbow injury in a Week 9 loss to the Jets and again when Allen took a big hit in the Bills' divisional-round loss to the Bengals. However, Allen played through a number of issues throughout the season and never missed a full game. Keenum is under contract for two more seasons, and with No. 3 quarterback Matt Barkley signing a reserve/future contract Monday, the Bills may be prepared to enter 2023 with the same quarterback room. Allen likely isn't going anywhere for years, but Keenum holds intrigue as a player who's one injury away from directing a high-powered offense.

  • Bills' Case Keenum: Week 10 Waiver Priority List

Keenum could be called upon to start for the Bills with Josh Allen (elbow) hurt. While we don't want to see that, Keenum could be an option in Superflex or two-quarterback leagues against the Vikings in Week 10. It would be a revenge game for Keenum, who spent 2017 in Minnesota and had his best year, averaging 18.7 Fantasy points per game. And he should have a rapport with Stefon Diggs since the two were together with the Vikings as well. Keenum is worth at least 15 percent of your remaining FAB in Superflex and two-quarterback leagues.

  • Bills' Case Keenum: Mops up in garbage time

Keenum completed two of his five pass attempts for eight yards in Sunday's 38-3 win over the Steelers. Even though he played just eight snaps after starter Josh Allen was rested for the final 10 minutes of the blowout win, Keenum was still given the opportunity to air it out. Keenum showed a rapport with wideout Isaiah Hodgins -- who drew four of the targets -- but he wasn't able to generate a first down across his three drives. Thanks to a pair of resounding wins over the Titans and Bills, Keenum has already seen action in two games this season, but he's unlikely to receive extended playing time in 2022 unless Allen misses time with an injury, or if Buffalo has the luxury of resting starters Week 18 in advance of the playoffs.

  • Bills' Case Keenum: Improves in second preseason outing

Keenum completed 16 of 18 passes for 192 yards with one touchdown pass and no interceptions in Saturday's preseason win over Denver. Keenum showed major improvement in his second preseason outing, after a poor showing in his Bills debut a week prior. The efficient showing should be enough to squash any talk of Matt Barkley overtaking Keenum for the No. 2 job, but with Josh Allen being rested in the preseason finale this week against the Panthers, both of the backups should see plenty of playing time.

  • Bills' Case Keenum: Rough debut for Buffalo

Keenum completed 11 of 18 passes for 86 yards with no TD passes and two interceptions in Buffalo's preseason win over the Colts on Saturday. While those numbers are rough on their own, Keenum also lost a fumble and was sacked six times, and his 33.3 rating paled in comparison to teammate Matt Barkley's 86.1 figure. Keenum was brought in to be the main backup to Josh Allen, and it's doubtful the Bills would punt on that plan after just one lousy preseason performance, but Keenum will have to at least show something better over the last two preseason games.

  • Browns' Case Keenum: Pair of TD tosses in finale

Keenum completed 17 of 24 passes for 176 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Browns' 21-16 win over the Bengals on Sunday. He also rushed five times for 15 yards and lost a fumble. Keenum once again did a serviceable job in Baker Mayfield's (shoulder) stead, connecting with Jarvis Landry and Demetric Felton on touchdown passes of 26 and 10 yards, respectively. The veteran is under contract through next season and therefore figures to remain as a trusted veteran No. 2 option behind Mayfield or a possible offseason addition.

  • Browns' Case Keenum: Frontrunner for Week 18 start

Keenum is expected to start Sunday's game against the Bengals after head coach Kevin Stefanski said Tuesday that Baker Mayfield (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery "as soon as possible" and won't be available for the season finale, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Though Stefanski didn't officially name a Week 18 starter, Keenum will presumptively receive the nod, considering he's served as the No. 2 signal-caller behind Mayfield all season when both have been available. Kyle Lauletta, meanwhile, is another option at the position, though he's bounced around multiple organizations since entering the league in 2018 and has only had a few weeks to get up to speed with the Cleveland playbook since being signed off Jacksonville's practice squad Dec. 17. Keenum previously filled in as a starter in place of Mayfield on a Thursday night game against the Broncos back in Week 7. The Browns leaned heavily on a D'Ernest Johnson-led ground attack in that contest, but Keenum was competent when his number was called, as he completed 21 of 33 attempts for 199 yards and a touchdown in Cleveland's 17-14 win.

  • Browns' Case Keenum: Suits up Saturday

Keenum (illness) is listed as active for Saturday's game against the Packers, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports. As is Baker Mayfield, who is slated to start the contest. In that context, Keenum, who was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, is in line to serve as Cleveland's No. 2 QB on Saturday.

  • Browns' Case Keenum: Officially questionable for Week 16

Keenum (illness), who was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, will be listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Packers, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. The designation is only procedural with Keenum being one week removed from testing positive for the virus, but because he's cleared the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol, he's on track to play Saturday. With Baker Mayfield (illness) also coming off the same list Friday, he's expected to handle his usual starting role, while Keenum backs him up.

  • Browns' Case Keenum: Moved to COVID-19 list

The Browns placed Keenum (illness) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday. News of Keenum testing positive for the virus first arrived Thursday, but the Browns didn't officially deactivate him until a day later. Because of the Browns' mounting COVID-19 concerns, the NFL officially moved the team's Week 15 game against the Raiders from its originally scheduled date (Saturday). The Browns and Raiders are now scheduled to play Monday at 5 p.m. ET, and the two-day delay coupled with the NFL's newly updated COVID-19 return-to-play protocols could give both Keenum and Baker Mayfield -- who tested positive Wednesday -- a chance to play Week 15. If neither Keenum nor Mayfield is available, the Browns will turn to Nick Mullens to serve as their starting quarterback.
