Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Moving back to Jacksonville
Rotowire
Beathard signed with the Jaguars' 53-man roster Wednesday.
Beathard was on the Dolphins' practice squad before the move and will provide quarterback depth for Jacksonville while Trevor Lawrence nurses a shoulder injury. The Iowa product was with the Jaguars during training camp and appeared in seven games for the team last season. If Lawrence is unable to play Sunday against the Vikings, Beathard would likely operate as the No. 2 quarterback, behind Mac Jones.

C.J. Beathard: Headed to Miami
Rotowire
The Dolphins signed Beathard to the practice squad Wednesday.
Beathard was released by the Jaguars at the end of training camp with an injury settlement due to a groin injury he picked up in preseason action. He wasn't able to catch on with the Giants following a workout in late September, but the 2017 third-round pick will return to Florida and serve as the Dolphins' practice squad quarterback. Tyler Huntley (shoulder) and Skylar Thompson (ribs) are nursing injuries while Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday. Tim Boyle is the only healthy quarterback on the Dolphins' active roster, meaning Beathard could be elevated from the practice squad to serve as the backup or emergency quarterback against the Cardinals on Sunday.

C.J. Beathard: Healthy again
Rotowire
Beathard (groin) tried out for the Giants on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
The quarterback was released with an injury settlement by the Jaguars in late August after injuring his groin during the second preseason game, missing the last preseason contest and losing the backup quarterback battle to Mac Jones. The Giants have three healthy signal-callers at the moment in Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito. Beathard played in seven regular-season games (107 offensive snaps) for the Jaguars in 2023.

C.J. Beathard: Released with injury settlement
Rotowire
Beathard (groin) was released with an injury settlement Tuesday.
Beathard is now free to sign with another team after losing a preseason competition with Mac Jones for the No. 2 QB job in Jacksonville. Beathard suffered a groin injury during the Jaguars' second preseason game and didn't play in the final exhibition.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Suffers groin injury
Rotowire
Beathard injured his groin during Saturday's exhibition game against Tampa Bay and has been ruled out from returning, John Shipley of SI.com reports.
Trevor Lawrence didn't suit up Saturday, and Beathard entered as the second quarterback following Mac Jones. Beathard played the entire third quarter but was sacked on the final play of the period, and Jones reentered on Jacksonville's first series of the fourth. Jones and Beathard are battling for the backup QB role behind Trevor Lawrence, and Beathard could have his opportunity for that role diminish greatly if he's unable to take the field for the team's final preseason game Friday versus Atlanta. Beathard finished Saturday's contest having gone 5-for-7 for 40 passing yards while rushing twice for 10 yards. Meanwhile, Jones completed 16 of 23 pass attempts for 210 yards and two touchdowns while rushing six times for 14 yards. Neither quarterback threw an interception.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Entering lineup second Saturday
Rotowire
Coach Doug Pederson said Thursday that Beathard will be the second quarterback to enter Saturday's preseason game against the Chiefs, John Shipley of SI.com reports.
Beathard will get a chance to handle preseason reps Saturday after Trevor Lawrence has finished with his allotment of plays. That could be read as an indication that Beathard is currently ahead of Mac Jones in Jacksonville's backup quarterback competition, but real clarity on that front may not arrive until closer to the end of the preseason.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Expected to compete with Jones
Rotowire
Beathard is expected to compete with Mac Jones -- who is slated to be traded from the Patriots to the Jaguars -- to be Trevor Lawrence's top backup in 2024, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
The report notes that Beathard is in the final year of a two-year, $4.5 million contract that he signed prior to last season. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, part of the Jaguars' motivation for the deal is that Beathard has been banged up at times during his stint with the team, with Jones -- a 2021 first-rounder -- giving the team a healthy backup option with plenty of starting experience ahead of the coming season.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Solid season as backup
Rotowire
Beathard appeared in seven games this season, starting one, and completed 40 of 53 passes for 349 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also had eight carries for 35 yards.
The 30-year-old primarily worked in mop-up duty but saw significant action in Weeks 16 and 17 with Trevor Lawrence injured. Beathard played well in those contests, completing 28 of 39 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown, helping Jacksonville to a victory in his lone start. He's under contract for 2024 and seems likely to work as Lawrence's backup once more.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Remains backup for Week 14
Rotowire
Beathard will serve as the backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Browns with Trevor Lawrence (ankle) listed active for the contest and having been cleared to start, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Just six days after suffering what was reported as a right high-ankle sprain in Monday's 34-31 overtime loss to the Bengals, Lawrence will be able to return to the lineup without having to miss a game, even though his injury typically entails a multi-week recovery. The Jaguars were still concerned enough about Lawrence's health to sign another quarterback (Nathan Rourke) to the active roster Saturday, but Rourke will be a healthy inactive Sunday while Beathard sticks in the No. 2 role. While coming on in relief of Lawrence against the Bengals, Beathard completed nine of 10 pass attempts for 63 yards to go with seven yards on his lone carry.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Available Week 14, if needed
Rotowire
Beathard (shoulder) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Browns.
Beathard's practice activity was affected this week to the injury he sustained to his left shoulder during his relief appearance in Monday's 34-31 overtime loss to the Bengals, but even though he's been cleared to play Week 14, he may not be needed. Trevor Lawrence has made rapid progress in his recovery from the right high-ankle sprain he suffered Monday and is being listed as questionable for Sunday's contest after logging limited practices Thursday and Friday. The Jaguars appear to be viewing Lawrence as a game-time decision, but if he demonstrates enough progress to get the green light to start ahead of Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff, Beathard would be stuck in his usual backup role.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Still limited Thursday
Rotowire
Beathard (left shoulder) remained limited at practice Thursday.
Meanwhile, Jacksonville's franchise QB Trevor Lawrence, who is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, also was limited Thursday after missing Wednesday's session. Friday's injury report will add further context with regard to the duo's status for Sunday's game against the Browns, but Lawrence's ability to practice Thursday has brightened the prospects of him potentially being able to play this weekend.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Gains clearance
Rotowire
Beathard (groin) was cleared to practice Sunday according to head coach Doug Pederson, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports.
Beathard was carted off the field during an early June minicamp practice, and has been out or limited since. The 28-year-old was considered the favorite to back up Trevor Lawrence, and he'll now work to regain any lost ground to Jake Luton and Kyle Sloter on those expectations, if any.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Suffers groin injury
Rotowire
Beathard was carted off the practice field Monday after injuring his groin during practice, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
An MRI is pending to determine the severity of the injury. Beathard is the favorite to be Trevor Lawrence's primary backup in 2022 after occupying that same position in 2021, but that's now up in the air until he gets his imaging results. Jake Luton, whom Jacksonville signed in February after he spent a season on Miami's practice squad, also is on hand for the Jaguars.

Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Sent to COVID list
Rotowire
The Jaguars placed Beathard (undisclosed) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.
Beathard will need to fully clear league protocols before returning to team facilities, which puts his status in doubt for Sunday's season finale against Indianapolis. If Beathard is unavailable Week 18, practice squad signal-caller Danny Etling will stand to bump to the active roster and operate as the top backup to Trevor Lawrence.

Rotowire
The Jaguars activated Beathard from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports.
Beathard missed less than a week of practice while progressing through the league's COVID-19 protocols. He can now resume working as Jacksonville's third quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Named starting QB
Rotowire
Beathard was named the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Nick Mullens will require season-ending elbow surgery, opening the door for Beathard to make his 11th career start and his first of the season. Beathard entered the game in Mullens' place during last week's loss to the Cowboys, and he completed five of seven passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, a stat line that's slightly skewed by a 49-yard hail mary in the fourth quarter. Over 17 career games, Beathard sports a 1-9 record with a 57.8 completion percentage and 6.9 yards per target. He'll take the field without running back Raheem Mostert (ankle) or wideout Deebo Samuel (hamstring), but George Kittle (foot) has a chance to return this week, according to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Climbs depth chart due to injury
Rotowire
Beathard will be the backup to Nick Mullens for at least the next six weeks, as Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will miss at least that long due to a high-ankle sprain, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Mullens will get first crack at filling in for Garoppolo, starting with Thursday's game against Green Bay. Beathard will wait in the wings should Mullens struggle, but considering Beathard has usurped Mullens as Garoppolo's backup as recently as earlier this season, the window is wide open for the Iowa product to get another shot under center if things start to go south for San Francisco's offense.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Takes over as starter mid-game
Rotowire
Beathard filled in for a struggling Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) in the second half of Sunday's 43-17 loss to Miami. He completed nine of 18 pass attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Beathard has had to relieve a different struggling quarterback ahead of him on the depth chart for the second consecutive week. Unlike last week's late comeback attempt against the Eagles, the backup had a more pedestrian outing when given a full half to operate. Garoppolo clearly did not look right early on, and his injured ankle may have had a big part in why he performed so poorly. It would be a surprising turn of events if an official change was made with both players being healthy, so we have to assume the job is still Garoppolo's after one ugly start.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Finishes third on depth chart
Rotowire
Beathard did not see the field while serving as the 49ers' third-string quarterback in 2019.
San Francisco -- in unorthodox fashion -- decided to keep three quarterbacks on its 53-man roster after the team was unable to trade backups Nick Mullens and Beathard during the preseason. This move showed the confidence the coaching staff has in the 26-year-old's abilities as a signal caller. Beathard's 57.3 completion percentage and 12:13 TD:INT ratio came in less-than-ideal conditions, but he has shown to have accuracy on shorter pass attempts with some athleticism as a runner when called upon. Both he and Mullens can be kept around on affordable contracts for 2020, so it will be interesting to see if the team decides to run with three quarterbacks again following a healthy season from starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

49ers' C.J. Beathard: Practices Wednesday
Rotowire
Beathard (thumb) participated in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Beathard suffered a thumb injury during Saturday's game against the Cowboys, the severity of which kept him sidelined during Tuesday's practice. The third-year quarterback managed to return Wednesday, and will resume competing for the No. 2 quarterback role with Nick Mullens.
