Cardinals' David Blough: Could compete for backup job

Blough should get a chance to compete with Colt McCoy (undisclosed) for the Cardinals' backup quarterback role, which takes on added importance with Kyler Murray rehabbing from an ACL tear, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
McCoy is also recovering from an unspecified surgery, potentially opening the door for Blough to be the first-team quarterback when offseason practices begin. McCoy's injury wasn't nearly as serious as Murray's, so the 36-year-old should be ready for training camp even if he misses part or all of OTAs. The Lions are expected to waive Blough if Nate Sudfeld passes his physical in Detroit on Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
It initially seemed like Blough had beaten out Tim Boyle for the backup job behind Jared Goff, but it seems that Detroit wants to go in a completely different direction after both of them put together underwhelming preseason performances. Blough will enter the season as the No. 2 quarterback after it was determined that Tim Boyle (thumb) will undergo surgery for a broken right thumb, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
While it's not clear if Boyle will miss the entire season, Blough is set to serve as the backup for as long as the free-agent acquisition is sidelined. When forced into action for five games with Detroit in 2019, Blough managed 5.7 yards per pass attempt with a 54 percent completion rate.

After Blough made the Detroit roster out of training camp only to get cut in September, the Lions thought enough of the 25-year-old to sign him back to the active roster once it was known in October that the Cowboys were in the market for someone to replace Dak Prescott (knee). However, Blough went on to see action in just a single game in 2020 while serving as the No. 3 QB behind Matthew Stafford and Chase Daniel. While there's a chance he could return as the No. 2 option in 2021 should Daniel be let go, it seems more likely that Detroit will take a developmental signal-caller in the upcoming draft to fill that role.

Blough completed 24 of 43 passes for 260 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Lions 38-17 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. He also rushed five times for 19 yards and committed a fumble but managed to recover it.
The rookie did the best he could under the circumstances, as he was playing without Marvin Jones (IR, ankle) in the receiving corps and without the benefit of Bo Scarbrough (ribs) in the backfield to help keep the defense honest. Blough unsurprisingly relied heavily on Danny Amendola, with whom he connected on eight occasions for 102 yards.
