Steelers Draft Penn St QB Drew Allar In 3rd Round

Player Outlook
A third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Allar will battle to be the primary backup for Aaron Rodgers. He is not worth drafting outside of Dynasty leagues. Allar came to Penn State as an elite five-star prospect but never lived up to the hype. The Steelers are attempting to rebuild his mechanics and get the most out of him. Allar has great size and arm strength and an impressive high school pedigree, so it wouldn't be a shock to see him put it together at the NFL level. Contributing in 2026 seems like a long shot, but keep his potential in mind if you play in Dynasty leagues.

Fantasy News

  • Steelers' Drew Allar: Plays second half of preseason loss

Allar completed 11 of 23 passes for 110 yards and turned one carry into four yards during the Steelers' 17-0 preseason loss to the Jets on Friday. Both Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph sat out of Friday's exhibition contest, leaving Will Howard and Allar to command the Steelers offense. Howard drew the start and played the entire first half but tossed two interceptions in the second quarter. Allar took over for the start of the second half, but he wasn't that much better, going three-and-out on three of seven series while taking three sacks. It looks like Rudolph will be the Steelers' backup QB to Rodgers for the 2026 campaign, so Thursday's preseason finale against the Bills could determine whom between Howard and Allar will be the QB3 on the 53-man roster and who will open the regular season on the practice squad.

  • Steelers' Drew Allar: Will play Friday

Allar is set to play in Friday's preseason game against the Jets, Chris Adamski of TribLive.com reports. Allar will check into the game at an undetermined time after starter Will Howard finishes his reps. Allar and Howard are likely battling for a roster spot, with Allar's three-touchdown performance and 154.8 passer rating in last Thursday's preseason opener against the Packers being the standard Howard will likely need to match to keep up on the depth chart.

  • Steelers' Drew Allar: Produces three TDs in preseason win

Allar completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing yards and another TD on two carries in Thursday's 28-9 preseason win over the Packers. The rookie third-round pick didn't see the field until late in the third quarter after Mason Rudolph and Will Howard had both gotten work under center, but Allar had the best night of any Steelers QB. Allar scored on a three-yard run to cap his first possession of the game before tossing a five-yard TD to Kaden Wetjen and a four-yard score to Riley Nowakowski in the fourth quarter. Aaron Rodgers is the unquestioned starter for Pittsburgh and Rudolph seems locked in as the top backup, but the team seems likely to keep both Howard and Allar on the roster rather than risk losing one of them to another team.

  • Steelers' Drew Allar: Fighting for a spot

Allar is set to work with the third-string offense in training camp, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Allar is set to compete with Will Howard, working with "the other groups" as Mason Rudolph takes snaps with the second-team offense. With Aaron Rodgers currently set to remain as the No. 1 quarterback, Allar and Howard will need to fight to take the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.
