  • Lions' Jake Bates: Nails clutch kicks in win

Bates went 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts while making both of his extra-point tries in Sunday's 26-23 win over the Texans. He later walked it off with a game-winning 52-yarder as time expired. Through nine games in 2024, Bates is a perfect 14-for-14 on field-goal tries, including three makes from 50-plus, while also going 32-for-33 on PATs.

  • Lions' Jake Bates: Kicker to Sit

Bates just had an incredible game at Dallas with 19 Fantasy points, and he connected on 4-of-4 field goals and 5-of-5 PATs. But prior to that, he scored eight Fantasy points combined in his previous two games against Arizona and Seattle, where he didn't attempt a field goal. This week, Bates is facing a Vikings defense that has allowed just seven field goal attempts on the season in five games, with only four made kicks. And Minnesota has allowed just eight PATs all year. This probably isn't the week to trust Bates in most leagues.

  • Lions' Jake Bates: Officially signs with Detroit

Bates officially signed a two-year contract with the Lions on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Presumably the contract is structured in such a way that the Lions could move on during training camp if Bates isn't able to replicate his trademark leg strength throughout the preseason, but the two-year deal is notable because NFL vagabonds Michael Badgley and James Turner are also on the roster. The Lions will hope Bates can replicate the success of spring football sensation Brandon Aubrey, who parlayed an excellent performance in the USFL into a record-setting rookie campaign with the Cowboys in 2023. Potentially playing in the comfy confines of Ford Field and being situated in a high-powered Detroit offense, Bates could be an immediate fantasy difference maker.
