Scoring is the name of the game in the NFL and over the past 20 years, the league scoring average has been at least 21.5 points per game in all but one season -- and that was the first year (20.7 in 2006). The high mark was 24.8 in the 2020 COVID season, and the 32 teams averaged 23 points per game during the 2025 campaign. The NFL's top scoring team typically is closer to 30 points per game, with the Broncos scoring a league-record 37.9 in 2013 and the Rams averaging 30.5 last season. Highest scoring NFL team at Kalshi

The common denominator for top scoring teams is a great quarterback, and Hall of Fame signal-callers like Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers all have led the league's No. 1 scoring offense over the past 20 years. And it was Peyton Manning who led that Broncos juggernaut, which fell short of a title when the Seahawks shut that high-powered offense down in a 43-8 victory in Super Bowl XLVIII. Recent stars who have led top offenses include Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford, who was named MVP after last season's performance, when he led the league in passing yards (4,707) and TD passes (46).

Many of those recent stars are right back in the mix to be leading the top scoring team in the 2026 NFL season, with Stafford's Rams the top choice ahead of Josh Allen's Bills and Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Jared Goff, who was calling the shots for the Lions when they led the NFL at 33.2 points per game in 2024, and Prescott's Cowboys are also strong options. Buffalo has never led the NFL in scoring with Allen running the show, but Prescott and Mahomes have each led the No. 1 scoring offense twice in their careers.

The Rams bulked up their defense in the offseason with the addition of Myles Garrett and a rebuilt secondary, but they were quiet on the offensive side of the ball. However, they lit up the league with a unit that features receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, and running back Kyren Williams. Tight end Tyler Higbee was retained, and good things are expected from rookie tight end Max Klare, who was drafted in the second round out of Ohio State to give Stafford another safety blanket. Nacua led the NFL in receptions (129) and was second in receiving yards (1,715), while Adams led the league with 14 receiving TDs. Williams was sixth in the NFL with 1,252 rushing yards and added 283 receiving yards, scoring 13 total touchdowns.

Allen has a solid supporting cast and no longer lacks a true No. 1 receiver after the team added DJ Moore in a trade with the Bears. The 29-year-old had just 50 receptions but scored six times and averaged 13.5 yards per catch with the Bears last season. He had reached at least 96 receptions the previous two seasons. Now, he joins an offense that features running back James Cook, who led the NFL with 1,621 rushing yards, receivers Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman, and tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox. The Cowboys and Lions are both stacked with talent, with Prescott joined by one of the best wide receiver duos in the league in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. The latter had a breakout season in 2025, posting 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, while Lamb went just over 1,000 yards on 75 grabs despite missing three games. Jake Ferguson had 82 catches, tied for third in NFL among tight ends, and running back Javonte Williams rushed for 1,201 yards (4.8 per carry) and 11 scores.

Goff was second in the league with 4,564 passing yards and threw 34 TD passes, but 2025 was a disappointing season for the Lions. Still, the 2016 first overall pick has all sorts of talent around him, starting with receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and running back Jahmyr Gibbs. St. Brown had 117 catches for 1,401 yards last season, while Gibbs totaled 1,839 yards and 18 touchdowns. Throw in tight end Sam LaPorta and receiver Jameson Williams, and Goff has more than his fair share of weapons. LaPorta had 86 receptions as a rookie and posted 40 last season in just nine games, while Williams had 1,117 receiving yards and averaged 17.2 per catch, fifth-best in the league. Goff also led the Rams when they scored an NFL-best 29.9 points in 2017.            

Burrow has shown nothing but star power when he is healthy, and with receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, plus Chase Brown coming out of the backfield, the 2020 first overall pick has the help he needs. He just needs to stay on the field, as he played only eight games last season but threw for 1,809 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Bengals have improved up front, but Burrow has taken a beating throughout his career, which is why he has been named NFL Comeback Player of the Year twice. Cincy has finished in the top 10 in scoring offense in all three seasons where Burrow played at least 16 games but has never finished higher than sixth in the NFL.

One sleeper team might be the Bucs, who have quarterback Baker Mayfield playing with a clear motivation. The Browns' 2018 No. 1 overall pick always plays with a chip on his shoulder, but he has a new contract in mind and expects to prove his worth in 2026. The 31-year-old played through numerous minor injuries in 2025 but still threw for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns. Mike Evans is gone, but Emeka Egbuka put up 930 yards as a rookie, and the team hopes Chris Godwin, who has played 16 games over the past two seasons, can return to health. He had topped 80 catches four times over the previous five seasons.
