Padres' Luis Arraez: Rare homer in three-hit effort

Arraez went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 7-0 win over the Mets.

Arraez led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer and added an RBI single in the third to stretch the Padres' lead to 6-0. The long ball was his first in a month, though the infielder has been productive in August, hitting .299 (23-for-77) over 18 contests. For the season, he's up to a .306/.339/.382 slash line with four homers, 36 RBI, 67 runs scored and six stolen bases over 121 games between the Padres and the Marlins.

  • Yuli Gurriel DH | SD

Braves' Yuli Gurriel: Placed on IL at Gwinnett

Gurriel (undisclosed) was placed on Triple-A Gwinnett's 7-day injured list Friday, Gwinnett Broadcaster Dave Lezotte reports.

Gurriel had begun playing third base in the wake of a hand injury to Austin Riley, in case he was needed in the majors at the position during the closing weeks of the regular season. However, his 40-year-old body may not be holding up well to the additional defensive responsibilities, although Atlanta has yet to indicate the nature of Gurriel's injury.

  • Reds' Dominic Smith: Idle against lefty

Smith is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.

Smith went 0-for-3 in his Reds debut Thursday, but he'll yield to the righty-hitting Ty France at first base against southpaw Bailey Falter and the Pirates. Smith slashed .237/317/390 in 278 plate appearances with the Red Sox before being released.

  • Reds' Dominic Smith: Makes team debut

Smith started at first base and went 0-for-3 in Thursday's 7-0 loss to the Pirates.

Smith, who was signed earlier in the day after being released by Boston on Tuesday, made his debut for the Reds. With Jeimer Candelario (toe) and Jake Fraley (knee) landing on the the 10-day injured list in recent days, the Reds could have regular spots in the lineup available for both Smith and Ty France against right-handed pitching at either first base and designated hitter.

  • Nationals' Juan Yepez: Breaks slump with blast

Yepez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Thursday against the Rockies.

Yepez's eighth-inning blast drove in three and put the game on ice for the Nationals. It was the fourth homer of the season for Yepez, who broke a 2-for-29 spell when he sent the Peter Lambert sweeper over the center field fence. Yepez now holds a .278 average with 16 extra-base hits, 20 RBI, 20 runs and two steals across 151 at-bats.

  • Ty France 1B | SD

Reds' Ty France: Sitting down Thursday

France isn't in the Reds' lineup for Thursday's game versus Pittsburgh.

France will get a breather during Thursday's series opener after going 2-for-11 with two RBI and two runs scored in Cincinnati's last series against Toronto. The newly signed Dominic Smith will get the nod to start at first base while Jonathan India serves as the DH, allowing Santiago Espinal to cover second.

  • Reds' Dominic Smith: Agrees to MLB deal with Cincinnati

The Reds agreed to a major-league contract with Smith on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

The 29-year-old was recently cut loose by the Red Sox following the return of Triston Casas from injury, but he's managed to quickly land another major-league deal. Smith slashed just .237/.317/.390 in 83 games for Boston, although he has a respectable .747 OPS since the All-Star break. Smith could see some action at first base while Jeimer Candelario (toe) is out.

  • Patrick Wisdom 3B | SEA

Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Continuing to see limited work

Wisdom is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Tigers.

The 32-year-old has started in just three of the Cubs' 18 games thus far in August and is expected to continue seeing limited usage while Michael Busch and Isaac Paredes are healthy and entrenched as the team's everyday starters in the corner infield. Wisdom has logged three straight seasons of 20-plus home runs, but he's slugged just six long balls so far in 2024 while receiving only 135 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Grabbing seat Thursday

Goldschmidt is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Brewers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Goldschmidt went 1-for-9 with four strikeouts in the first two games of the series and will now begin the rubber match on the bench. The Cardinals will go with Alec Burleson at first base.

  • Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Out of lineup Thursday

Chaparro is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Rockies, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Chaparro will get his first day off since being called up from Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 13, as he had started each of the last eight games. Joey Gallo will handle first base for the Nationals, while Juan Yepez will serve as the designated hitter.
