Romy Gonzalez 2B | BOS
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Makes first start
Gonzalez started at first base and went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Monday's 8-5 loss to Baltimore.
Gonzalez made his first start of the season, filling in for Triston Casas against a lefty. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said during spring training that Casas would not be subject to a platoon, but he was on the bench with Boston facing its first lefty of the season. The decision to sit Casas may have more to do with his slow start. Including his pinch-hit appearance Monday, Casas is 1-for-17 with seven strikeouts.

Justyn-Henry Malloy 3B | TB
Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Recalled by Detroit
The Tigers recalled Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Malloy wasn't able to crack the Opening Day roster despite a strong spring training, but the 25-year-old will join the big club after Detroit placed second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Monday in a corresponding move. Over 71 games with the Tigers as a rookie in 2024, Malloy slashed .203/.291/.366 with eight home runs and 21 RBI across 230 plate appearances, though he struck out at a 37 percent clip. Malloy won't be a direct replacement for Torres, but he could see some starts in the outfield or at designated hitter while all of Matt Vierling (shoulder), Parker Meadows (arm) Wenceel Perez (back) are on the IL.

Yankees' Dominic Smith: Returns to New York on minors deal
The Yankees re-signed Smith to a minor-league contract Monday, Max Goodman of NJ.com reports.

Alec Burleson LF | STL
Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Exiting lineup Monday
Burleson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels.
The Cardinals are facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Tyler Anderson) for the first time this season, so the lefty-hitting Burleson will retreat to the bench after going 2-for-11 with a double, a walk, two runs and two RBI during the team's recent three-game series versus the Twins. Luken Baker will enter the St. Louis lineup Monday as the club's designated hitter.

Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn: Heading to bench vs. lefty
O'Hearn is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox.
The Orioles are facing a left-handed starter (Sean Newcomb) for the first time this season, so the lefty-hitting O'Hearn will retreat to the bench in the series opener. Heston Kjerstad will serve as the Orioles' designated hitter in place of O'Hearn, who went 6-for-15 with two doubles, two walks and two runs in the team's season-opening four-game series in Toronto.

Red Sox's Triston Casas: Off Monday against lefty
Casas will not start Monday in Baltimore, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
The top four in Boston's order hit a combined .138 (9-for-65) during a season-opening series that saw the Red Sox lose three of four games in Texas. Diamondbacks' Josh Naylor: On base five times
Naylor went 2-for-2 with three walks, a double, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in Sunday's 10-6 win over the Cubs.
Naylor delivered the game-winning knock with an eighth-inning double as part of an eight-run rally. Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Pops second home run
Manzardo went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Sunday's win over Kansas City.
Manzardo ripped a two-run blast off of Sam Long in the fifth inning, which proved to be the game-winning hit. Manzardo enjoyed an impressive opening series, going 5-for-11 with a pair of long balls and six RBI. He posted a .999 OPS this spring and is already paying dividends to those who bought in on the offseason breakout hype.

Tyler Soderstrom C | ATH
Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Smacks third homer
Soderstrom went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Mariners.
Soderstrom continued his red-hot start to the season Sunday, smacking an opposite-field homer off Bryan Woo that would stand as the A's lone run in the game. The 23-year-old Soderstrom now has two hits in three of his first four games to start the year, including a pair of home runs on Opening Day. He's quickly solidified an everyday role, going 7-for-15 with four extra-base hits.
