  • Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Faces high-velocity pitching

Walker (oblique) recently began hitting against a high-velocity pitching machine, MLB.com reports.

Walker, who was placed on the 10-day injured list July 30, continues to check off boxes during his rehab. The process began with running, dry swings, hitting off a tee and then progressed to facing soft-toss pitching. Now, after hitting high-velocity pitches from a machine, Walker's next step is live batting practice.

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Gets aboard four times in loss

Wade went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double, two walks and two total runs scored in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Mariners.

Wade has been fairly quiet in August, going 11-for-47 (.234) over 16 games this month. He's added a 9:13 BB:K while also hitting two homers in that span. For the year, Wade is at a .281/.410/.397 slash line with five homers, 22 RBI, 38 runs scored, 13 doubles and one stolen base over 301 plate appearances. He remains strictly confined to a strong-side platoon role at first base.

Padres' Luis Arraez: Rare homer in three-hit effort

Arraez went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 7-0 win over the Mets.

Arraez led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer and added an RBI single in the third to stretch the Padres' lead to 6-0. The long ball was his first in a month, though the infielder has been productive in August, hitting .299 (23-for-77) over 18 contests. For the season, he's up to a .306/.339/.382 slash line with four homers, 36 RBI, 67 runs scored and six stolen bases over 121 games between the Padres and the Marlins.

  • Ben Rice 1B | NYY

Yankees' Ben Rice: Late addition Friday

Rice will play first base and bat ninth Friday against Colorado after DJ LeMahieu (face) was scratched from the lineup, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

The lefty-hitting Rice was left off the Yankees' initial starting nine against southpaw Kyle Freeland and the Rockies. However, after LeMahieu got hit in the face by a ball during pregame warmups, Rice was inserted into the lineup.

  • Yuli Gurriel DH | SD

Braves' Yuli Gurriel: Placed on IL at Gwinnett

Gurriel (undisclosed) was placed on Triple-A Gwinnett's 7-day injured list Friday, Gwinnett Broadcaster Dave Lezotte reports.

Gurriel had begun playing third base in the wake of a hand injury to Austin Riley, in case he was needed in the majors at the position during the closing weeks of the regular season. However, his 40-year-old body may not be holding up well to the additional defensive responsibilities, although Atlanta has yet to indicate the nature of Gurriel's injury.

  • Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: On bench Friday

Mountcastle (wrist) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros

Mountcastle injured his wrist Thursday during a headfirst slide into second base and will get at least one day off to recover. Ryan O'Hearn will play first base in his place Friday.

  • Ben Rice 1B | NYY

Yankees' Ben Rice: Sitting against left-hander

Rice is not in the lineup for Friday's contest against the Rockies, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

As usual, Rice will yield to DJ LeMahieu at first base against a lefty (Kyle Freeland). Rice enters the weekend series having registered just one hit so far in August.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Idle Friday

Guerrero is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Blue Jays.

Guerrero is out of the starting nine for the first time since the All-Star break, in what appears to be a maintenance day. Guerrero made two starts at third base this week and played DH on Thursday. Addison Barger will bat eighth and handle the hot corner Friday.

  • Reds' Dominic Smith: Idle against lefty

Smith is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.

Smith went 0-for-3 in his Reds debut Thursday, but he'll yield to the righty-hitting Ty France at first base against southpaw Bailey Falter and the Pirates. Smith slashed .237/317/390 in 278 plate appearances with the Red Sox before being released.

  • Reds' Dominic Smith: Makes team debut

Smith started at first base and went 0-for-3 in Thursday's 7-0 loss to the Pirates.

Smith, who was signed earlier in the day after being released by Boston on Tuesday, made his debut for the Reds. With Jeimer Candelario (toe) and Jake Fraley (knee) landing on the the 10-day injured list in recent days, the Reds could have regular spots in the lineup available for both Smith and Ty France against right-handed pitching at either first base and designated hitter.
