The Yankees placed LeMahieu (foot) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.

LeMahieu's rehab from a bone bruise in his foot is coming along but hasn't advanced enough for him to play in the opener. The veteran infielder will undergo an MRI on Friday to check his progress. Oswaldo Cabrera and Jon Berti will handle third base while LeMahieu is out.

Garcia will start at third base and bat leadoff in Thursday's season opener against the Twins.

Garcia had a great spring in posting a .984 OPS and opens the season as the Royals' leadoff man, as expected. The young infielder has some breakout potential this season from the top of the batting order, boasting good wheels and some sneaky pop.

Farmer is starting at second base and batting seventh for the Twins in Thursday's opener versus the Royals.

Farmer gets the nod at the keystone with the Royals starting southpaw Cole Ragans. The 33-year-old utility player had a .781 OPS against left-handed pitching last season for Minnesota.

The Rays placed Walls (hip) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Walls is working his way back from last October's surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip. According to MLB.com, Walls has been hitting in the batting cage, fielding grounders and throwing during spring training, and he's set to meet with a doctor Monday to get a gauge of where he stands in his recovery from surgery. Since he'll need to go through a spring training-esque progression that likely includes a minor-league rehab assignment once he's cleared to intensify his baseball activities, Walls might not be ready to make his season debut until late April or early May.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that Shenton has made the Rays' Opening Day roster, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Shenton was optioned to minor-league camp earlier this month, but injuries to other players created another opportunity and he wound up making the team. The 26-year-old can handle the corner-infield and corner-outfield spots and could also be an option at designated hitter while Jonathan Aranda (finger) opens the season on the injured list. Shenton will be making his major-league debut whenever he gets into a game.

The Orioles designated Maton for assignment Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

The 27-year-old was acquired from Detroit in February but wasn't going to be included on Baltimore's Opening Day roster, so the club removed him from the 40-man roster. Maton played in 93 games for the Tigers last season and had a .593 OPS with eight home runs and 32 RBI.

Jung started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Monday's exhibition game against the Red Sox.

Jung, who missed much of the Cactus League with a calf issue, increased his activity following Sunday's spring debut. After playing three innings and getting two at-bats Sunday, Jung was in the field for six innings and had three at-bats Monday. He's expected to play Tuesday, when these same two teams meet, and could be in line for a full nine innings.

Nevin is expected to win the Orioles' last bench spot on the Opening Day roster, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Nothing is official yet, but Ryan McKenna and Nick Maton were informed they missed out on roster spots Sunday, paving the path for Nevin to be a utility bat off the bench. Nevin hit .333 with two home runs, seven RBI and a 2:11 BB:K over 23 games in Grapefruit League play. He has no easy path to playing time, barring any external additions -- third base would appear to be the position most up for grabs to begin the season.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that LeMahieu (foot) will begin the season on the injured list, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

It's confirmation of what manager Aaron Boone said Sunday was the likely result. Cashman added that LeMahieu is also dealing with inflammation in addition to a bone bruise in his right foot and will undergo another MRI later this week to see how the healing has come along. Because the IL move can be backdated, LeMahieu could return as soon as the Yankees' home opener on April 5, and Cashman didn't rule out the veteran infielder being ready by that date.
