  • James McCann C | ARI

White Sox's James McCann: Out of lineup

McCann is not in the lineup Friday against Minnesota.

After posting an excellent .936 OPS in April, McCann has continued to exceed expectations in May, recording an .854 OPS so far. Welington Castillo starts behind the plate in his absence.

  • Rays' Travis d'Arnaud: Out of Thursday's lineup

D'Arnaud is not in Thursday's lineup against the Indians, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

He is hitting just .045 with seven strikeouts and zero extra-base hits in nine games this month. Erik Kratz starts behind the dish, hitting eighth.

  • Austin Wynns C | ATH

Orioles' Austin Wynns: Splitting time with Severino

Wynns will start at catcher and bat seventh Thursday against the Yankees, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Wynns and Severino have alternated starts behind the dish over the last eight contests, with both backstops drawing four starts. Given he maintains a .515 OPS on the season compared to Severino's .798 mark, Wynns will probably need to increase his offensive production before claiming a larger portion of the timeshare.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

    Yankees' Gary Sanchez: Getting breather

Sanchez is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

Manager Aaron Boone will extend Sanchez a rest after the 25-year-old started each of the past six days, serving as a designated hitter twice and catching four times. Austin Romine will step in behind the plate in the series finale while Kendrys Morales handles DH duties.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Mariners' Omar Narvaez: Hopes to return Friday

Narvaez, who left Wednesday's game against the Rangers in the top of the fourth inning after taking a foul tip off his left knee, hopes to be able to return to action Friday in Oakland, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

He apparently got hit in the exact same spot on his left knee a few games ago, and attempted to play through it Wednesday, before taking himself out when he realized he was hurting the team. The plan is for him to get lots of ice and treatment during Thursday's off day before hopefully returning for this weekend's series. Tom Murphy would be the fill-in if Narvaez needs a couple extra off days.

  • Danny Jansen C | TEX

Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Heads to bench

Jansen is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox.

Jansen has five hits (including two homers) in his last four games, though that's only been enough to drag his season line up to .183/.262/.275. Luke Maile starts behind the plate in his absence.

  • Royals' Martin Maldonado: Sitting in front end of twinbill

Maldonado is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Cardinals, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports.

Cam Gallagher will behind the dish in the first game, working in a battery with Brad Keller. Expect Maldonado to check back into the lineup for the nightcap to catch for Homer Bailey.

  • Indians' Kevin Plawecki: Filling in for Perez

Plawecki will start at catcher and bat ninth Wednesday against the Athletics.

He'll be filling in for top backstop Roberto Perez, who exited Tuesday's loss with a concussion. The Indians have indicated that Perez's head injury is only a mild one that won't force him to the 7-day injured list, but Plawecki could draw another handful of starts behind the dish while the team waits for Perez to gain full clearance.

  • Indians' Roberto Perez: Will avoid IL

The Indians confirmed Wednesday that Perez (concussion) won't require a stay on the 7-day injured list, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Manager Terry Francona admitted after Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics that Perez sustained a mild concussion during the contest, but the backstop apparently won't be subject to a prolonged shutdown. After faring well in his initial concussion tests, Perez is viewed as day-to-day and could be ready to return to the lineup at some point over the weekend. Since Perez won't be available for at least Wednesday's series finale, however, the Indians recalled Eric Haase from Triple-A Columbus to provide some extra depth behind the dish.

  • Eric Haase C | SF

Indians' Eric Haase: Joins big club

The Indians recalled Haase from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Though top backstop Roberto Perez was diagnosed with a concussion following his departure from Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics, he's already made noteworthy progress in his recovery and isn't expected to require a stint on the 7-day injured list. That said, Perez is unlikely to be available for at least a couple days, so Haase will move up to the big club to provide some extra depth at catcher behind Kevin Plawecki.
