    Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Battling illness

Ruiz is unavailable Wednesday due to illness, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

It provides an explanation as to why Ruiz is out of the Nationals' lineup for the second day in a row. The Nats have an off day Thursday, so Ruiz should have a shot to be ready for their next game Friday in Oakland.

  • Brewers' Jeferson Quero: Set for shoulder surgery

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Quero will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Quero suffered the injury in Triple-A Nashville's first game of the season while diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt. His rehab from surgery is expected to take around nine months, so Quero should be ready for the start of spring training. The 21-year-old was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster last offseason after posting a .779 OPS with 16 home runs at Double-A Biloxi in 2023.

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Ruiz is absent from the lineup for a second straight day Wednesday against the Giants, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

A second day of rest combined with the Nationals recalling a third catcher in Drew Millas could indicate that Ruiz is banged up. To this point, though, the team hasn't indicated that Ruiz is dealing with any sort of significant injury. Millas will start behind the dish Wednesday.

  • Tom Murphy C | SF

Giants' Tom Murphy: Fills in for resting Patrick Bailey

Murphy will start at catcher and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Though he was able to beat out Joey Bart for the Giants' No. 2 catcher job before Bart was dealt to Pittsburgh earlier this month, Murphy has seen limited action behind No. 1 backstop Patrick Bailey. With Bailey getting a breather in the day game after a night game, Murphy will draw his fourth start through the Giants' first 13 games.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Sitting out Wednesday

Bailey is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

It's a routine day of rest for the Giants' top catcher. Tom Murphy will be behind the plate for Jordan Hicks on Wednesday.

  • Elias Diaz C | KC

    Rockies' Elias Diaz: Resting Wednesday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Diaz will get a breather for the day game after he caught both of the first two contests of the series while going 3-for-7 with a pair of RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games. Jacob Stallings will check in for Diaz behind the dish.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Getting breather Wednesday

Moreno is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Colorado.

Moreno nearly doubled his season hit total with four base knocks in Tuesday's 3-2 win, but the Diamondbacks and Rockies are playing a day game after a night game, so Arizona's top catcher will get a break. Tucker Barnhart will form a battery with starting pitcher Tommy Henry on Wednesday.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Back in lineup Wednesday

Realmuto (neck) will start at catcher and bat cleanup in Wednesday's game in St. Louis.

Realmuto departed Tuesday's 3-0 loss when a pitch in the dirt bounced up and caught him in the throat. Even with the Phillies and Cardinals playing a day game after a night game, he's feeling well enough to give it a go Wednesday.

  • Drew Millas C | WAS

Nationals' Drew Millas: Summoned to big leagues

Washington recalled Millas from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Millas will serve as a third catcher for the big club. The 26-year-old got a taste of the majors last season, going 8-for-28 with a home run in 11 contests.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Gets breather Wednesday

Smith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Smith will get some rest after he started behind the plate each of the past three days while going 3-for-13 with a home run, four RBI and an additional run. Austin Barnes draws the starting nod at catcher in the series finale in Minnesota.
