  • Astros' Cesar Salazar: Recalled from Sugar Land

The Astros recalled Salazar from Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Salazar was up with the big club briefly earlier this season, going 1-for-7 at the dish. He'll temporarily step in as the Astros' No. 2 catcher behind Yainer Diaz (hand) after Victor Caratini (concussion) was placed on the 7-day injured list Wednesday.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: X-rays on hand negative

Kirk is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Twins due to a right hand injury, though X-rays came back negative, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Kirk's hand swelled up after it was hit by a foul tip during Tuesday's contest. He finished that game, however, and has managed to avoid any fractures. It's not clear whether Kirk will be available off the bench Wednesday, but he should have a good shot to return to the lineup Friday against the Brewers following the team's off day Thursday.

  • Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: Receiving night off

Narvaez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

He'll hit the bench for the second time in the series while the Red Sox give Connor Wong a look behind the plate. Narvaez has had a stranglehold on the No. 1 catching job for most of the season, but his job security might have slipped a bit while his production has fallen off during the second half. Since the All-Star break, Narvaez is slashing just .158/.210/.316 with a 26.8 percent strikeout rate over 21 games.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Getting breather Wednesday

Kirk is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Twins.

Kirk will get a routine night off after he started at catcher in the first two games of the series. Tyler Heineman will be behind the dish and bat eighth for the Blue Jays.

  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Takes part in BP

Ruiz remains in the concussion protocol but resumed taking swings in batting practice last week, MLB.com reports.

The Nationals haven't provided many updates on Ruiz's status since he was placed on the 7-day injured list July 8, but Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reported last Thursday that the 27-year-old still hoped to get cleared and play again later this season. Since he's been out for more than seven weeks, Ruiz will likely require at least a few rehab contests once he gets the green light for game action before being activated from the IL. Riley Adams has been the team's starting catcher in Ruiz's absence, but the Nats will need a new backup after Drew Millas suffered a fractured and dislocated left index finger in Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

  • Drew Millas C | WAS

Nationals' Drew Millas: Suffers fractured finger

Millas was removed from Wednesday's game against the Yankees in the third inning due to a fractured and dislocated left index finger.

Millas was injured when Austin Wells' bat struck his catching hand on a swing, resulting in catcher's interference. He lined out in his lone plate appearance before exiting. Millas is likely headed to the 10-day injured list and could be lost for the rest of the season. He had been serving as Riley Adams' backup while Keibert Ruiz (concussion) is sidelined. The Nationals have only three catchers on their 40-man roster, and with Ruiz facing an uncertain timeline for a return, the team will likely need to add another backstop to the mix ahead of their next game Friday versus the Rays.

  • Marlins' Agustin Ramirez: Rare day off Wednesday

Ramirez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Since getting the call to the big leagues April 21, Ramirez has shouldered one of the heavier workloads among all backstops in baseball, as he's often served as the designated hitter on his non-catching days. The Marlins will give Ramirez a rare day off from both playing defense and hitting, as he'll take a seat after starting in each of the last 14 games. Liam Hicks will step in behind the plate Wednesday, and Heriberto Hernandez will get the nod at DH.

  • Guardians' Austin Hedges: Filling in for resting Naylor

Hedges will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Hedges will pick up his 43rd start of the season while top backstop Bo Naylor rests for the day game after a night game. Though Hedges continues to bring value through his game-calling abilities, he's remained an easy out at the plate in his age-32 season, slashing .140/.232/.240 across 141 plate appearances.

  • Bo Naylor C | CLE

    Guardians' Bo Naylor: Resting Wednesday

Naylor is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

The Guardians will hold Naylor out of the starting nine for the matinee contest, after the catcher was behind the plate for all nine innings of a 3-0 win Tuesday night. Austin Hedges will get the nod at catcher in the series finale.

  • Liam Hicks C | MIA

Marlins' Liam Hicks: Three hits in Tuesday's loss

Hicks went 3-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's loss to Atlanta.

Starting at DH and batting fifth, Hicks produced his first three-hit performance since July 13, the last game before the All-Star break. The 26-year-old rookie has held his own in the majors after making the jump from Double-A as a Rule 5 pick out of the Tigers' system, slashing .262/.355/.360 over 313 plate appearances with four homers, 27 runs and 37 RBI.
