  • Matt Carpenter DH | STL

Yankees' Matt Carpenter: Slugs two homers Saturday

Carpenter went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against Cleveland.

Prior to Saturday, Carpenter hadn't started a game since June 22, but he was in the lineup for the first game of the twin bill. The veteran took advantage of the opportunity, going deep in each of the sixth and ninth innings and producing a run-scoring single in the seventh. Though Carpenter's route to playing time remains complicated, he's been great for the Yankees when called upon this season, slashing .293/.420/.902 with eight homers and 17 RBI over 51 plate appearances.

  • Franmil Reyes DH | WAS

Guardians' Franmil Reyes: Launches homer Saturday

Reyes went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 13-4 loss to the Yankees in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader.

Reyes went back-to-back with Josh Naylor in the second inning, but Gerrit Cole was able to settle in after that. Reyes also started in the nightcap, going 0-for-4. In 10 games since he returned from a hamstring injury, he's gone 9-for-37 (.243) with two homers, five RBI and four runs scored. It's a modest improvement for the 26-year-old, who is still slashing an unsightly .206/.261/.324 with five long balls, 17 RBI and 13 runs scored through 184 plate appearances overall. He's still seeing a majority of the starts as the designated hitter, and he could pick up some time in right field while Oscar Gonzalez (abdomen) is sidelined.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Goes yard in nightcap

Stanton went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 6-1 win over the Guardians in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Stanton was unusually quiet in the matinee, going 0-for-5, but he made his mark by going back-to-back with Anthony Rizzo in the nightcap. Stanton has hit safely in seven of his last nine games, batting .265 (-for-34) in that span. For the season, the slugger owns a .248/.330/.526 slash line with 20 homers, 53 RBI, 31 runs scored and five doubles through 65 contests.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Goes deep Friday

Ohtani went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Astros.

Ohtani helped Los Angeles get off to a promising start with his first-inning solo shot to right field. That was the only run the Angels managed in the contest, however, and they tallied only one additional hit. Ohtani has notched three homers over his past six contests, and he has added two doubles, four RBI, a stolen base and six walks over that span.

  • Eloy Jimenez DH | TOR

White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Could return next week

Manager Tony La Russa indicated Saturday that Jimenez (hamstring) could return next week, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

General manager Chris Getz said Friday that Jimenez has been getting more comfortable with his legs during his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte, and the 25-year-old appears to be closing in on a return in the coming days. La Russa said Saturday that the White Sox could ease Jimenez into action by giving him chances to serve as the designated hitter once he's ultimately activated. Over his eight games since resuming his rehab assignment, he's hit .167 with a homer, four runs and three RBI.

  • Jesse Winker DH | NYM

Mariners' Jesse Winker: Ban reduced, starting Saturday

Winker, who is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics, has had his suspension reduced to six games, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Winker was initially issued a seven-game suspension for his role in a brawl during last Sunday's game against the Angels, but he had his punishment reduced by one matchup following his appeal. Since he's starting in left field and batting second Saturday, he presumably won't begin to serve his suspension until at least Sunday.

  • Astros' Michael Brantley: Progressing slowly in recovery

Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that Brantley (shoulder) hasn't yet resumed hitting, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Brantley landed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder discomfort Tuesday, and Baker said that the injury has "responded kind of slow" so far. Baker acknowledged that Brantley might not be able to return when first eligible July 7, and the team figures to take a cautious approach to prevent a more significant injury.

  • Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Cleared to return

Alvarez (head) is starting Saturday's game against the Angels.

Alvarez missed the last two games after sustaining a head injury during a collision Wednesday, but he'll serve as the designated hitter and bat third Saturday. Over his last eight games, he's slashed .360/.484/.960 with five homers, nine RBI and eight runs.

  • Ji-Man Choi 1B | NYM

Rays' Ji-Man Choi: On bench for Game 1

Choi isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Choi went 2-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout Friday but will be out of the lineup for Saturday's matinee. Harold Ramirez is serving as the designated hitter and batting third.

  • Eloy Jimenez DH | TOR

White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Still getting comfortable

White Sox assistant general manager Chris Getz said that Jimenez (hamstring) is "getting more comfortable with his legs" while on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Getz further stated, "It's just a matter of him [Jimenez] getting comfortable with it. When you have an injury like that, there is going to be some competitiveness and getting him to where he doesn't have to think about his hamstring, just go out and play baseball." On a more optimistic note, Getz also offered that Jimenez's sprint speed and time to first base is improving, so there has been progress made. That provides some hope that Jimenez will be activated from the injured list fairly soon, though the exact timing remains unclear.
