Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera will visit a doctor this week before deciding whether or not to have surgery on his strained groin, CBSSports.com baseball insider Danny Knobler reports.

On Sunday, Cabrera addressed the idea that he could have performed better in the playoffs with additional regular-season rest.

"We checked with doctors," Cabrera said. "We got a lot of different opinions. If somebody had told me that if I rested 15 days, I'd be OK, I'd have rested 15 days. They didn't tell me that."

Cabrera hit .262/.311/.405 with two home runs and seven RBI in 42 post-season at-bats.

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has won the 2013 Hank Aaron Award for the American League, given to each league's best hitter. Cabrera was in St. Louis to receive the award prior to Game 4 of the World Series.

Cabrera led the majors in all three slash statistics, hitting .348/.442/.636 with 44 home runs and 137 RBI in 555 at-bats. He wins the Hank Aaron Award for the second consecutive season after last year's Triple Crown campaign.

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper had surgery Friday to debride and repair the bursa in his left knee, MASNSports.com reports Saturday. 

Harper is expected to resume working out in 4-6 weeks following the surgery. He's expected to be ready to go for spring training. 

The finalists for the 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove awards were announced on Friday, with three players at each position. The awards honor the league's best defenders, and winners will be announced Oct. 29.

Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter went 0 for 4 Thursday but drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in his team's 4-2 win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the World Series.

Carpenter grounded out twice and struck out once in his first three at-bats. However, he was given the chance to pay the hero in the seventh inning with his team down one, coming up with the bases loaded and just one out. He delivered a fly out to left field, bringing not just the runner home from third base for Carpenter's RBI, but also another run on a poor throw by the pitcher that tried to nail the runner heading to third.

Carpenter committed a fielding error on a tough play in the eighth inning trying to make a hurried throw to get Jacoby Ellsbury, but it didn't come back to haunt him as the Cardinals kept the Red Sox off the board in the inning. He's 1 for 8 as the series heads to St. Louis.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters Monday that third baseman Miguel Cabrera may end up needing surgery on his injured groin. For the most part, Cabrera played through a Grade 2-3 strain, sitting out just two of the team's final nine regular season games. Coming off a third straight batting title, he wasn't quite himself in the postseason, batting .262 (11 for 42) with two homers in two playoff series.

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera found himself hitting second Wednesday after manager Jim Leyland shuffled the starting lineup for Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Red Sox, and Cabrera came through with two hits and two RBI in four at-bats as the Tigers evened the series with a 7-3 win.

Cabrera bounced back from his first hitless game of the postseason Tuesday to contribute to the team's seven-run outburst over the first four innings of the Game 4 win. After hit first multi-hit performance of the playoffs, Cabrera owns a .257/.297/.429 line with two home runs in 35 at-bats. He also stole second base uncontested in the win.

Cabrera is now hitting .259/.310/.481 in the postseason and his home runs in two of his past three games. Perhaps he's still injured, but either way he has shown he can still produce through the adversity.

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera shook off a recent power outage to hit a two-run home run Thursday as his team advanced to the American League Championship Series with a 3-0 Game 5 win over the A's.

Cabrera's fourth-inning home run was his first extra-base hit since Sept. 17, when he hit his only home run in the month of September. He enters a matchup with the Red Sox in the ALCS with a hit in seven straight postseason games, dating back to the 2012 World Series.
