Bligh Madris DH | STL
Pirates' Bligh Madris: Heads back to bench
Madris will sit Friday against the Giants.
Madris briefly appeared to be stepping into a starting role, but that's less clear now, as he's been on the bench for three of the last four games. His .190/.253/.286 slash line in 91 trips to the plate this season certainly doesn't look like starting material.

Matt Carpenter DH | STL
Yankees' Matt Carpenter: Won't need surgery
Carpenter won't require surgery on his broken foot, though he'll still be returning very late in the regular season if he makes it back at all, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
Carpenter recently visited a second foot specialist, whose diagnosis aligned with what the Yankee had previously heard. He'll avoid weight-bearing activities for two weeks, at which point he'll be re-evaluated.

Spencer Horwitz 1B | PIT
Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Dealing with thumb injury
Horwitz hasn't played at Triple-A Buffalo since Aug. 3 due to a sprained right thumb, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports.
Horwitz was promoted to the Triple-A level in early July, and he's slashed .265/.351/.410 with two homers, eight runs, seven RBI and two stolen bases over his first 24 games in Buffalo. He's working through a hitting program and isn't expected to miss much more time.

Jesse Winker DH | NYM
Mariners' Jesse Winker: Back in action Friday
Winker (back) is starting in left field and batting cleanup Friday against the Rangers, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
The 28-year-old sat out the past two games after leaving Monday's contest with back spasms, but he'll rejoin the lineup for Friday's series opener after Seattle had a scheduled day off Thursday. Winker is 5-for-18 with two home runs, five RBI, five runs and a 9:5 BB:K through seven games in August.

Daniel Vogelbach DH | TOR
Mets' Daniel Vogelbach: Sitting against southpaw
Vogelbach isn't starting Friday's game against the Phillies.
Vogelbach went 4-for-9 with two doubles, four RBI, a run and three walks over his last two games but will be on the bench for the second time in the last three matchups with left-hander Ranger Suarez on the mound Friday. Darin Ruf will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth.

Michael Brantley LF | HOU
Astros' Michael Brantley: Undergoes season-ending surgery
Brantley underwent an arthroscopic labral repair on his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season.
Brantley has been sidelined with his shoulder injury since late June and received a second medical opinion on his shoulder Wednesday. He'll be unable to return this year following his procedure, and it's not yet clear whether he's expected to return in time for spring training in 2023. He appeared in 64 games this season and slashed .288/.370/.416 with five homers, 28 runs, 26 RBI and a stolen base.

Luis Torrens C | NYM
Mariners' Luis Torrens: Cast off roster
Torrens was designated for assignment Thursday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
Torrens showed flashes at the plate in 2021, but he struggled to a .214/.262/.252 line across 141 plate appearances prior to losing his roster spot this season. Curt Casali -- who the Mariners acquired at the trade deadline -- was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move and should serve as the backup catcher to starter Cal Raleigh.
-
Franmil Reyes DH | WAS
Cubs' Franmil Reyes: On bench versus southpaw
Reyes is out of the lineup for Thursday's Field of Dreams Game against the Reds.
Reyes made his debut for Chicago on Tuesday and is 3-for-8 with an RBI and two strikeouts in his first two games with the team after being claimed off waivers from Cleveland. Nelson Velazquez will bat seventh as the designated hitter against Reds lefty Nick Lodolo.
-
Seth Beer DH | PIT
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Riding pine Thursday
Beer isn't starting Thursday against the Pirates.
Beer started the last three games and went 1-for-6 with three walks. He'll get a breather while Josh Rojas serves as the designated hitter with Emmanuel Rivera starting at the hot corner.
-
Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU
Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Sitting Thursday
Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Rangers.
Alvarez will get a breather as he's in the middle of a cold stretch at the plate, batting .146 with two extra-base hits over his last 11 games, though he did hit a home run Wednesday. Trey Mancini will take over at designated hitter and bat sixth in the series finale.
