Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Takes extra-inning loss

Hicks (1-6) took the extra-inning loss in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out one over two innings.

The game was resumed after getting suspended Friday due to weather. Hicks got through the ninth inning without much trouble but gave up a pair of runs in the 10th to take the loss. He's now at a 3.93 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 56:23 K:BB through 38.2 innings overall while adding seven saves, six holds and three blown saves. Hicks had a strong June, but he's now given up five runs (three earned) over his last seven outings.

  • Devin Williams RP | NYM

Brewers' Devin Williams: Nabs 22nd save

Williams picked up the save Saturday against the Reds. He struck out two over a clean inning.

Williams rattled off his third straight perfect inning and hasn't given up a hit in his last four appearances (3.2 innings). Through 36 outings (35.1 innings), Williams is tied with Josh Hader for the sixth-most saves in baseball and owns a 1.78 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 12.48 K/9.

  • Steven Okert RP | HOU

Marlins' Steven Okert: Opening on Sunday

Okert will serve as an opener for the Marlins on Sunday in Baltimore, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Johnny Cueto seems to be a good bet to serve as a bulk reliever in the game. Okert has been fantastic for the Marlins this season, holding a 2.53 ERA and 43:11 K:BB over 32 relief innings.

  • Sam Coonrod RP | NYM

Mets' Sam Coonrod: Throwing off mound

Coonrod (lat) began throwing off a mound Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Coonrod has been on the shelf all season with a right lat strain, and Saturday marks the first time he's thrown off a mound since spring training. There's still no plan in place for Coonrod to embark on a rehab assignment, but he seems to be trending in the right direction.

  • Andrew Nardi RP | MIA

Marlins' Andrew Nardi: Cleared to play catch

Nardi (triceps) was spotted playing catch Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Nardi is with the Marlins on their road trip to open their second-half schedule, but he may need to report to a minor-league affiliate for a brief rehab assignment once he advances further along in his throwing program. Miami placed the reliever on the 15-day injured list July 4 with left triceps inflammation.

  • Tommy Nance RP | TOR

Marlins' Tommy Nance: Completes side session

Nance (shoulder) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Nance has resided on the injured list all season due to a right shoulder strain, though he was able to make a minor-league rehab appearance May 12 before being shut down following a setback. He's beginning to ramp up again and will likely need to complete a few more side sessions before eventually graduating to facing hitters in live batting practice and then restarting a rehab assignment. Nance may face an uphill battle to make it back from the IL before the end of July.

  • Braves' Dereck Rodriguez: Recalled from Triple-A

Atlanta recalled Rodriguez from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday.

With A.J. Minter (shoulder) landing on the 15-day injured list Saturday, Rodriguez will come up from the minors to take the open spot in Atlanta's bullpen. The 31-year-old righty holds a 5.79 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 42 Triple-A innings this season, and he figures to serve as a depth piece while in the majors.

  • A.J. Minter RP | NYM

Braves' A.J. Minter: Lands on injured list

Atlanta placed Minter on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left shoulder inflammation, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Minter was pulled from his last appearance July 8 with pectoral tightness, but it now appears to be his shoulder that is bothering him. The team seems to be taking a cautious approach with the injury, so it's possible Minter will be able to return when he's first eligible July 27. Dereck Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move.

  • Anthony Bender RP | MIA

Marlins' Anthony Bender: Steps back on mound

Bender (elbow) completed a 15-pitch bullpen session earlier this week, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The side session amounts to Bender's first reported mound work since he underwent Tommy John surgery last August. The Marlins haven't officially ruled Bender out from pitching in 2023, but at this stage of his recovery program, he's most likely at least a month away from starting what would presumably be an extended minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Cory Abbott RP | SEA

Nationals' Cory Abbott: Beginning Game 1 on mound

Abbott will begin Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cardinals on the mound, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Abbott will start the game with a 3-2 count against Paul Goldschmidt after Friday's game was suspended during the third inning. The 27-year-old righty holds a 4.24 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through 17 innings this season and figures to pitch two or three frames Saturday.
