Smith (shoulder) resumed playing catch earlier this month but is without a clear timeline for returning from the 10-day injured list, MLB.com reports.

Before he was placed on the injured list Aug. 14 with right shoulder inflammation, Smith had been productive for the Mets in a middle-relief role, posting a 2.40 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 31 appearances. The Mets haven't shut Smith down for the season, but since he has yet to resume facing hitters, he may have a tough time making it back in the next two and a half weeks.

Gallegos was charged with his eighth blown lead of the season after he gave up a run on one hit while striking out one over an inning of relief in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Mets in 11 innings.

Tasked with protecting a one-run advantage in the bottom of the ninth, Gallegos surrendered a leadoff home run to Javier Baez to send the game to extras. Alex Reyes entered the contest the following inning and was credited with the win, while Kwang Hyun Kim kept the Mets off the board in the bottom of the 11th to claim his first save. Since Reyes was transitioned out of the closer role earlier this month, Gallegos picked up four saves in dominant fashion before Tuesday's hiccup, so he still looks to be the Cardinals' top late-inning arm.

The Nationals activated Nolin (suspension) ahead of Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

Nolin is back in the fold for Washington after he completed his five-game suspension Tuesday. Before receiving the ban for intentionally throwing at Freddie Freeman in his Sept. 8 start, Nolin had compiled a 5.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 17.2 innings. Those poor numbers make it far from a safe bet that Nolin will take back a rotation spot from Josh Rogers, who gave up two runs on 6.2 innings in his previous start last weekend in Pittsburgh. Rogers will get another starting nod Wednesday, and Nolin will likely be available in bulk relief if needed.

Estevez allowed a hit and a walk but also struck out a batter during a scoreless ninth as he got the save over Atlanta on Tuesday.

Estevez worked around the aforementioned two runners to close out the game for his eighth save of the year. The 28-year-old has converted four of five save chances already in September and has pitched very well aside from his blowup against the Giants last week. Overall, Estevez has a 4.50 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 55:19 K:BB over 54 innings this year.

Leone will start Wednesday's game versus the Padres, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Leone will get a fourth turn as an opener, a role he's filled frequently in the last couple of weeks. He can be expected to cover 1-to-2 innings in the contest, which is essentially another bullpen game as manager Gabe Kapler deals with a shorthanded rotation. Through 7.2 innings in September, Leone has allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four over 7.2 innings.

Peters (1-2) earned the win Tuesday after firing five shutout innings against the Reds. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five.

Peters blanked his opponent for the first time this season en route to picking up his first win. The southpaw used just 39 pitches to shut out the Reds on no hits or walks through the first three innings and cruised from there. It's a small sample, but Peters has been solid in five starts this year, pitching to the tune of a 2.66 ERA across 23.2 innings despite a 1.67 WHIP. The 29-year-old tentatively lines up for a road start Sunday at Miami.

Thompson (shoulder) completed a two-inning simulated game Tuesday, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Thompson landed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation Sept. 4, but it appears to have been a minor issue given the lack of a significant shutdown period. The 26-year-old will be reevaluated Wednesday and could return sometime in the next week if he has no further issues.

White was optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

The 26-year-old pitched two innings Monday after being recalled Sunday, allowing zero runs. He has been sent back and forth between the majors and Triple-A many times this season and he's posted a 3.74 ERA in 43.2 innings with the Dodgers in 2021. Kenley Jansen was reinstated from the paternity list Tuesday and will take his spot in the roster.

Jansen was reinstated from the paternity list prior to Tuesday's game versus the Diamondbacks, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

The 33-year-old had been away from the team since Sunday and will return to his role as the closer for the Dodgers. Since July 24, he has converted all 11 of his save opportunities while posting a 1.29 ERA and 11.1 K/9 over 21 innings. Mitch White was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in corresponding move.

De Los Santos was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

De Los Santos was claimed off waivers from the Phillies on Monday, and he'll join Pittsburgh's active roster after David Bednar (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list. The right-hander made 26 relief appearances for Philadelphia this year and posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 28 innings.
