Brandon Hughes RP | CHC
Diamondbacks' Brandon Hughes: Selected from Reno
The Diamondbacks selected Hughes' contract from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
With Ryne Nelson (shoulder) headed for the injured list, Hughes will rejoin the active roster in order to give the Diamondbacks some additional depth in their bullpen. The 28-year-old lefty hasn't found much success in the big leagues with a 10.29 ERA across 14 innings, though he's turned in a 2.08 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 21.2 frames at Triple-A since making his last MLB appearance. Andrew Knizner was DFA'd to create space for Hughes on the 40-man roster.

Max Lazar P | PHI
Phillies' Max Lazar: Optioned to Triple-A
The Phillies optioned Lazar to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday.
After coming up from Triple-A in late August, Lazar surrendered seven earned runs over just eight innings. His poor performance will cause him to be sent back to the minors while Kolby Allard rejoins the big-league squad to start Saturday's game.

Spencer Bivens RP | SF
Giants' Spencer Bivens: Returns to bullpen
Bivens appeared out of the bullpen in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Brewers, giving up two runs on two hits and no walks while striking out two in two innings.
Bivens returned to a relief role after he had made his previous appearance as a starter Sunday, when he tossed 4.2 innings of one-run ball while striking out three in the Giants' 7-6 win over the Padres. The Giants still have a pair of openings in the rotation with Kyle Harrison (shoulder) recently joining Robbie Ray (hamstring) on the injured list, but rookies Mason Black and Landen Roupp will fill those spots rather than Bivens.

Ryan Fernandez RP | STL
Cardinals' Ryan Fernandez: Handed fifth loss
Fernandez (1-5) allowed a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over 1.1 innings Friday, taking the loss in extra innings versus the Blue Jays.
The walk Fernandez issued was intentional, but it ended up helping the Blue Jays load the bases with no outs in the 11th inning. Fernandez was able to get one out on a fielder's choice to erase the initial runner, but Alejandro Kirk then delivered a walk-off single. Prior to Friday, Fernandez was on a 6.1-inning scoreless streak. The rookie reliever has pitched to a 3.21 ERA despite a 1.30 WHIP and 63:31 K:BB over 61.2 innings, and he's added two saves and 11 holds.

Devin Williams RP | NYM
Brewers' Devin Williams: Secures 12th save
Williams struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Williams collected his third save in four days by retiring the side on 14 pitches in the ninth inning. He's avoided a prolonged slump after a blown save Aug. 21 versus the Cardinals, following it up with a nine-inning scoreless streak that has seen him earn seven saves with a 16:4 K:BB. Williams is now at a 1.53 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB with 12 saves in 13 chances over 17.2 innings this season.

Luis Ortiz SP | CLE
Pirates' Luis Ortiz: Falls to Kansas City
Ortiz (6-6) took the loss Friday against the Royals, allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out five.
Ortiz and the Pirates fell into a deep hole early after Kansas City put up a six spot in the second inning. The 25-year-old Ortiz has now allowed 11 runs (seven earned) across 9.2 innings in his last two starts. His ERA sits at 3.45 on the year with a 1.13 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB across 122.2 innings. He'll look to right the ship in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week on the road in St. Louis.

Kyle Finnegan RP | DET
Nationals' Kyle Finnegan: Notches save Friday
Finnegan allowed a hit in a scoreless inning and earned a save over the Marlins on Friday.
Finnegan worked around a two-out single by Jesus Sanchez to finish off the 4-1 victory. It was Finnegan's 37th save of the year and his first since recording two during a Sept. 7 doubleheader against the Pirates. He owns a 3.36 ERA with a 56:20 K:BB through 59 innings. Finnegan has converted 14 of his last 15 save chances despite registering a 4.79 ERA during that span (21 appearances).

Jimmy Herget RP | COL
Cubs' Jimmy Herget: Claimed by North Siders
The Cubs claimed Herget off waivers from Atlanta and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Herget made eight appearances for Atlanta and posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 12.1 major-league innings before being designated for assignment. After being scooped up by the Cubs, Herget will take over a spot on the organization's 40-man roster, but he'll head to the Triple-A level for now.

Dedniel Nunez SP | NYM
Mets' Dedniel Nunez: Out for season
Nunez (forearm) has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Nunez has been dealing with a lingering forearm injury he initially sustained in late July. Nunez was reinstated Aug. 23 but was placed back on the shelf Aug. 29 when his flexor injury returned. The right-hander appeared in 25 games for the Mets this year, logging a 2.31 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 35 innings with an impressive 48:8 K:BB.

Camilo Doval RP | NYY
Giants' Camilo Doval: Takes second loss
Doval took the loss against the Brewers on Thursday, allowing one run on one walk over one inning while striking out one.
Doval didn't have his best stuff when he took the mound in the seventh inning, issuing a leadoff walk to Willy Adames before then being charged with three wild pitches in the frame -- the latter of which would lead to Adames coming home to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. The right-hander is having an awful September as a middle reliever for San Francisco as he's now allowed at least one run in four of six appearances this month, pushing his season-long ERA up to 5.02. He's also allowed runs in back-to-back outings.
