  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Cubs' Drew Smyly: Takes loss Tuesday

Smyly (3-6) allowed a solo home run across 1.1 innings of relief to take the loss Tuesday against the Guardians. He struck out one.

A blast by Jhonkensy Noel in the fifth inning was the only damage against Smyly, but it saddled him with the loss in Cleveland's 2-1 victory. Despite the 3-6 record, Smyly has been solid this season with a 2.83 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 47.2 innings. All of that work has come out of the bullpen, which is a contrast from last year, when the veteran lefty made 23 starts for the Cubs.

  • Emilio Pagan RP | CIN

Reds' Emilio Pagan: Working as opener Wednesday

Pagan will serve as the Reds' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Pagan owns a 4.22 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 21.1 innings on the season, though he threw a scoreless inning against the Brewers on Sunday in his first appearance since returning from the 60-day injured list. He's only made one appearance that lasted longer than one inning in 2024, so he'll likely only be asked to get through the Cardinals' first three batters before turning the game over to Carson Spiers, who is expected to pitch in bulk relief.

  • Beau Brieske RP | DET

Tigers' Beau Brieske: Opening Wednesday's game

Brieske will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Brieske turned in a strong outing when he worked as an opener in Friday's game against the Giants, striking out five batters over three scoreless innings in what matched his longest appearance of the season. He may be asked to handle a similar workload against Seattle before handing the game over to the bullpen. Bryan Sammons is available out of the bullpen on five days' rest and could be an option to serve as a bulk reliever behind Brieske.

  • Alexis Diaz RP | TEX

Reds' Alexis Diaz: Earns 24th save

Diaz earned the save against the Cardinals on Tuesday, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.

Diaz was called upon to protect a 4-1 lead in the ninth and tallied his 24th save of the year on 18 pitches. The 27-year-old has nailed down 17 consecutive save chances and owns a 4.07 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 41:26 K:BB across 42 innings this season.

  • A.J. Minter RP | MIN

    Braves' A.J. Minter: Visiting specialist

Minter is slated to see a specialist this week regarding his injured left hip, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Minter landed on the injured list Monday with left hip inflammation -- the second time his hip has forced him to spend time on the IL this year. His first injury caused him to sit out the entire month of June, and Atlanta will know more the southpaw's status for the remainder of the season after his doctor visit.

  • Jordan Leasure RP | CHW

White Sox's Jordan Leasure: Will start throwing Thursday

Leasure (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Thursday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Leasure landed on the injured list July 20 due to a right shoulder impingement, but he has finally been given the green light to begin throwing again. The White Sox haven't specified a target date for the 25-year-old to return to their bullpen, though as a reliever, it shouldn't take too long for him to build back up.

  • Mike Soroka SP | ARI

White Sox's Michael Soroka: Throws off mound

Soroka (shoulder) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Soroka only threw fastballs during his first session of mound work, but he seems to be trending in the right direction since a right shoulder strain sent him to the IL in mid-July. However, there is still no telling how far away he is from a return to Chicago's bullpen.

  • Angels' Kenny Rosenberg: Recalled from Salt Lake

The Angels recalled Rosenberg from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.

Since being optioned to the minors July 26, Rosenberg has allowed nine earned runs in just seven innings. Despite his poor performance, he'll now rejoin the Angels and presumably serve as a long-relief option. Davis Daniel was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Liam Hendriks RP | CHC

Red Sox's Liam Hendriks: Tossing another live BP

Hendriks (elbow) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Wednesday and the Red Sox will discuss next steps following the session, with a rehab assignment the likeliest outcome, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Manager Alex Cora didn't commit to sending Hendriks on a minor-league rehab assignment but indicated that it will probably be the next step in Hendriks' recovery from Tommy John surgery. Hendriks hasn't pitched in a game since June 10, 2023 and will likely need several appearances in the minors before being activated.

  • Brendan White RP | SEA

Tigers' Brendan White: Recalled, placed on 60-day IL

The Tigers recalled White from Double-A Erie on Tuesday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow strain.

The transaction clears a spot on Detroit's 40-man roster for Kerry Carpenter, who came off the 60-day injured list Tuesday. White has been limited to just 7.1 innings this season because of elbow issues and hasn't pitched in nearly two months. He is being tested for a potential radial nerve injury, per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com.
