Jeff Hoffman RP | MIN
Reds' Jeff Hoffman: Shut down for season
Hoffman has been shut down for the season due to elbow soreness, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Hoffman has been out since late July, so he technically had a chance to return in late September for an appearance or two. That won't be happening now, though an MRI did at least reveal that Hoffman had avoided a ligament tear and therefore won't need Tommy John surgery.

Joe Kelly RP | LAD
White Sox's Joe Kelly: Starting Friday
Kelly will start Friday's game against the Twins, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Kelly has surrendered eight runs over his past six outings but will be called upon to open Friday's contest. Davis Martin, who was previously expected to start Friday, is likely to follow Kelly as the primary pitcher, though Chicago hasn't officially announced its pitching plans.

Xzavion Curry RP | NYM
Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Recalled, could start Saturday
Curry was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday and could start Saturday against the Mariners, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
The Guardians have yet to announce a Saturday starter, but the 24-year-old righty is up as a corresponding move after Saturday's originally scheduled starter Aaron Civale was placed on the injured list due to forearm inflammation, and Curry and Civale were on the same pitching schedule. Curry made his big-league debut Aug. 15 against Detroit and gave up three earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings. He has a 4.21 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 44:22 K:BB in 51.1 innings over his last 10 starts in the minors.
-
Cody Morris RP | NYY
Guardians' Cody Morris: Starting in place of Plesac
Morris is starting Friday's game against the Mariners, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Despite already being 25 and coming with some durability concerns, Morris is one of the most exciting pitching prospects in the game. He boasts several plus pitches and logged a 1.69 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 39 strikeouts in 21.1 innings across nine rehab appearances after missing most of the season with a shoulder injury. He has yet to throw more than 3.1 innings in any outing this season after missing most of the first half with shoulder issues, however, so he may not be able to provide much length in Friday's start.

Daniel Mengden RP | KC
Royals' Daniel Mengden: Designated for assignment
Mengden was designated for assignment by the Royals on Friday.
The decision to remove Mengden from the 40-man roster comes just one day after he was called up to start against the White Sox. He picked up the loss after allowing three earned runs over 2.2 innings and is now headed out of Kansas City. He will likely finish the season in Triple-A should he clear waivers and remain with the organization.

Zack Kelly RP | BOS
Red Sox's Zack Kelly: To paternity list
Kelly was placed on the paternity list Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Kelly has given up two earned runs while striking out four in three innings over four appearances since making his MLB debut earlier this week. Tyler Danish is up to fill the hole in Boston's bullpen.
-
Wyatt Mills RP | WAS
Royals' Wyatt Mills: Recalled from Triple-A
Mills was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
Mills has been dominant out of the bullpen in Triple-A this season with a 1.82 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 24.2 innings. However, he has bounced back and forth between the majors and minors due to inconsistent play at the major-league level. He is likely to be used in low-leverage situations.
-
Denyi Reyes RP | NYM
Orioles' Denyi Reyes: Clears waivers
Reyes cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Reyes lost his spot on the 40-man roster when the Orioles selected Gunnar Henderson's contract Wednesday. Given that he owns a 7.50 ERA in 42 innings for Norfolk this season, it's no surprise Reyes passed through waivers unclaimed.
-
Cory Abbott RP | SEA
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Won't start until next week
Abbott isn't listed among the Nationals' three starting pitchers for this weekend's series with the Mets, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Though he is expected to eventually take over from the injured Cade Cavalli (shoulder) as Washington's No. 6 starter, the return of Josiah Gray to the rotation this weekend will allow the Nationals to push Abbott's turn back to next week. Abbott could be available out of the bullpen for the first two games of the series at Citi Field before likely slotting into the rotation at some point during a four-game set in St. Louis that begins Monday.

Victor Gonzalez RP | LAA
Dodgers' Victor Gonzalez: Eyeing mid-September return
Gonzalez (elbow) is on track to return from the 60-day injured list in mid-September, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Gonzalez began his rehab assignment Aug. 16, so the Dodgers will have 30 days from that date to evaluate him before he'll have to be activated or pulled off the assignment. Through his first five rehab appearances between rookie-level Arizona Complex League and Triple-A Oklahoma City, Gonzalez has covered five innings while striking out five and allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks. Manager Dave Roberts said Tommy Kahnle (elbow) and Danny Duffy (forearm) are on similar return timelines, so the Dodgers may not have room for all three arms on the 28-man active roster down the stretch even if they all avoid setbacks during their respective rehab assignments.
