McCullers (4-1) got the win after he pitched seven innings, surrendering two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight Wednesday versus Tampa Bay.

McCullers gave up one run in the sixth frame before Isaac Paredes took him deep for a solo shot in the seventh inning, accounting for the final tally against him in the contest. The right-hander has yet to allow more than three runs in any outing since making his season debut Aug. 13, making seven starts over that stretch. He now owns a 2.38 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 45 punchouts over 41.2 innings this year.

Lyles (11-11) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with six strikeouts over nine innings against the Tigers.

Lyles needed just 94 pitches to throw a complete game and earn his 11th win of the season, with the only damage on the night coming from a solo home run off the bat of Kerry Carpenter in the seventh inning. The complete game is Lyles' first of the season and comes as he had surrendered 21 earned runs through 30.2 innings over his previous six starts. He likely next lines up to face Boston next week in what could be a two-start period.

Manning (2-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks over 5.1 innings against the Orioles. He struck out four.

For just the second time this season, Manning allowed more walks than strikeouts as he never found his groove and suffered his third loss of the season. The five walks he issued tied for the most he's allowed in a single start in his young career. Manning still owns a 3.43 ERA and 1.17 WHIP and will try to get back on track in his next start, which figures to come against the Royals next week.

Williams finished the 2022 season with a 1.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 149:40 K:BB over 115 innings between High-A and Double-A.

After putting up a 1.40 ERA, 0.867 WHIP and 67:14 K:BB in nine starts for High-A Lake County, he posted a 2.31 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 82:26 K:BB in 16 outings for Double-A Akron. The 23rd overall pick in last year's draft, Williams certainly delivered a remarkable pro debut this season, and as a college arm who's risen quickly through the organization, he stands a chance of making his MLB debut as soon as the middle of next year.

Severino (lat) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Pirates.

Severino sustained a right lat strain in mid-July but recently made three minor-league starts during a rehab assignment and posted a 3.48 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 10.1 innings. The right-hander tossed just 57 pitches in 4.1 innings during his most recent rehab start, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him on a pitch count Wednesday.

The Red Sox recalled Seabold from Triple-A Worcester ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Cincinnati.

Boston moved reliever Garrett Whitlock (hip) to the 15-day injured list to open up a spot on the 28-man active roster for Seabold, who is rejoining the big club for the first time in the second half. While making three starts for the Red Sox prior to the All-Star break, Seabold delivered an 11.91 ERA and 2.56 WHIP in 11.1 innings.

Whitlock (hip) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Whitlock's placement on the injured list was expected since he's been shut down from throwing and will undergo surgery next week to address his right hip impingement. The right-hander is expected to be ready for spring training in 2023, while Connor Seabold was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Wednesday against the Reds.

Cease allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Tuesday.

Cease limited the damage to an Austin Hedges sacrifice fly in the second inning despite allowing more than five or more baserunners for a third straight start. Cease has logged quality starts in four of his last five outings and still appears to be one of the best pitchers in the American League, though he's faded a bit from his midseason peak. The right-hander owns a 2.13 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 217:71 K:BB through 173 innings across 30 starts. He's tentatively set for a favorable home start versus the Tigers in his next outing.

Castillo (7-6) took the loss during Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Athletics, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Castillo cruised through the first four frames before surrendering five consecutive two-out baserunners and all four runs in the fifth, prompting his removal. The 29-year-old fired 54 of 85 pitches for strikes with 13 of the swinging variety, though the four strikeouts match his lowest total in a start since June 15. Castillo has alternated stellar and subpar performances through four September turns, with the result being a 2.82 ERA across 22.1 innings. He's tentatively slated to pitch again Sunday in Kansas City.

Civale (forearm) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Tuesday.

Civale missed over three weeks with forearm inflammation, but he was able to throw 69 pitches (40 strikes) in his return. He faltered in the sixth inning, when he was charged with both of the runs on his line, though it was an otherwise solid start for the right-hander He's had few of those in 2022 with a 5.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 77:21 K:BB through 80 innings across 17 starts. Civale is projected for a road start in Texas this weekend if he checks out fine after Tuesday's outing.
