Mariners' Taijuan Walker: Pitches through foot injury

Walker, who pitched his first game Thursday after missing 10 days with a foot injury, said his right foot started aching after his first pitch, but he was able to pitch through it , the Seattle Times reports.

The injury likely prevented him from going deeper into the game. Walker threw 84 pitches in his 6.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and no walks against the Orioles. He'll continue to pitch through the injury. "It's been better," Walker said. "But it's something I have to push through. There's nothing structurally wrong with it. So I can still use my legs."

Mariners' Taijuan Walker: Turns in strong start versus red-hot Orioles on Thursday

Walker (4-6) gave up only four hits and an earned run over 6.1 innings in Thursday's 5-3 victory over the Orioles. He struck out five.

His foot issue was not a problem as he cooled off one of baseball's hotter teams with a highly efficient performance, one that saw him throw only 84 pitches over his six-plus innings. The 23-year-old has now tamed three dangerous offenses in his last four trips to the mound, as he'd shut out the Red Sox over five frames back on June 19, and did the same over eight innings to the Indians on June 8. Thursday, Walker managed to get 57 of his offerings across the strike zone, and notched first-pitch strikes on 14 of 22 hitters as well. He'll try to keep his momentum going when he takes on the Astros next Tuesday.

  • Michael Kopech SP | LAD

Red Sox's Michael Kopech: Placed on disabled list

Kopech was placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 24 with a calf strain, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports.

Kopech, who was set to make his debut at High-A Salem last Thursday, was a late scratch when he felt leg soreness while warming up prior to the game. The move to place him on the disabled list is precautionary and the right-hander is not expected to miss more than a start or two. The organization is eager to push Kopech, who had missed nearly a year of development after a 50-game suspension last year and a training-camp injury (fractured hand) that forced him to miss the first two-and-a-half months of 2016.

  • Red Sox's Sean O'Sullivan: Candidate to start for Boston on Sunday

O'Sullivan's scheduled start for Triple-A Pawtucket was skipped Thursday, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

The Red Sox have been getting by with four starters during their most recent turn through the rotation, but will need a fifth starter Sunday and it looks like skipping O'Sullivan's start Thursday makes him an option. He had a brief turn earlier this season for Boston and was eminently hittable in two starts, giving up 19 hits and 10 runs (nine earned) in 11.1 innings. Aaron Wilkerson is also an option to be called up, however. After Sunday, scheduled days off and the looming All-Star break will allow Boston to get by without the need for a fifth starter until July 24.

  • Indians' Carlos Carrasco: Strikes out 14 Blue Jays in dominant performance

Carrasco (4-2) shut down the Jays over 7.1 innings Thursday, allowing one run, three hits and two walks while striking out 14 in the win.

Between the sixth and eighth innings, Carrasco registered six consecutive strikeouts. Eight of the right-hander's 14 strikeouts came via his signature split-changeup. He fell one short of his career high of 15 strikeouts that came on Sept. 25 last year against the Royals. Since returning from the DL, Carrasco has been great, posting a 2.91 ERA and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 29 in 34 innings.

  • Rays' Jake Odorizzi: Strikes out seven Thursday

Odorizzi (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings, but received no decision Thursday against the Tigers.

Odorizzi was staked to a five-run lead through five innings before giving up a pair of runs before retiring a hitter in the sixth inning, forcing his exit from the contest. Unfortunately, the bullpen blew his three-run lead, keeping him from a potential victory. He's now failed to post a quality start in four of his last five outings, and his ERA is at 3.91 on the year. He'll make his next start Tuesday against the Angels.

  • Vance Worley SP | NYM

Orioles' Vance Worley: Activated from disabled list

Worley (groin) was activated from the DL on Thursday, the Baltimore Sun reports.

As expected, Worley will rejoin the O's ahead of their series opener in Seattle after spending just over the minimum 15 days on the disabled list. He has posted a 1.80 ERA in 30 innings as a reliever this season (compared to a 5.06 ERA in two starts) and will likely continue in a long-relief role for the time being.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Misses chance to pick up third win

Rondon (2-6) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, five hits and one walk while striking out six in a no-decision Thursday against the Twins.

Rodon retired the first 11 Twins hitters he faced before Robbie Grossman and Brian Dozier launched back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. Rodon pitched a perfect fifth, but the Twins scored two in the sixth on three hits and chased Rodon from the game. The White Sox built up a 5-2 lead against Twins starter Tommy Milone by scoring one run in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth, but Rodon was unable to capitalize on the opportunity to win his third game of the season. He'll take a disappointing 4.24 ERA and 1.46 WHIP into his next start Tuesday against the Yankees.

  • Tommy Milone SP | SEA

Twins' Tommy Milone: Fails to get out of fourth inning versus White Sox

Milone (0-2) was lucky to walk away with a no-decision after allowing five runs on nine hits in just 3.1 innings Thursday against the White Sox. He walked one and struck out three.

It was Milone's second start since returning to Minnesota from Triple-A Rochester on June 19, with the results no better than his first start last Friday against the Yankees. It was the complete opposite at Rochester, where Milone was went 4-0 with a 1.66 ERA in seven starts for the Red Wings, striking out 41 while walking just four in 48.2 innings. He lasted at least five innings in all seven outings, going at least seven in five of them. The southpaw has already lost his spot at the bottom of the team's rotation once this year, and if he doesn't get better results soon, the 29-year-old is at-risk of heading back to the minors.

  • Andrew Heaney RP | LAD

Angels' Andrew Heaney: Slated to undergo Tommy John surgery

Heaney (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

A follow-up exam this week showed that Heaney's elbow has not improved in the two months since he received stem-cell treatment, and thus the decision was made to send him for reconstructive surgery. Considering where we're at in the season and the fact that recovery from Tommy John surgery typically takes more than a calendar year, it seems likely Heaney will remain out through the 2017 campaign.
