  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Athletics' Sonny Gray throws gem, takes first loss Wednesday

Athletics pitcher Sonny Gray was stuck with his first loss Wednesday despite allowing just one earned run on three hits in seven innings while striking out nine and walking none in his team's 2-0 defeat against the Red Sox.

Gray (4-1) gave up a leadoff single in the second inning and watched the runner advance to second on a wild pitch with one out before scoring on a two-out single. He allowed another single in the third and was perfect over the remainder of his outing, but the damage was done.

Gray owns a 1.61 ERA and 53:15 K:BB ratio in 56 innings. He'll square off with the Astros in Houston Tuesday.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Red Sox's Wade Miley pitches through trouble for win vs. A's

Red Sox pitcher Wade Miley maneuvered in and out of trouble throughout Wednesday's start, giving up five hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings but holding the A's scoreless in his team's 2-0 win.

Miley (2-4) broke a three-game losing streak Wednesday by hunkering down with people on base through most of the afternoon, matching his season high in free passes while tossing his second scoreless outing for the season.

"He was outstanding," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Miley, per MLB.com. "He was resilient. The first three innings, they get a number of guys in scoring position with less than two outs. A leadoff triple, second and third with less than two outs, and he never gave in. He got some quick outs. We were able to get a couple of popups on the infield. He gets a key strikeout in one situation. After the third inning, he settled into a much better rhythm."

Miley owns a 5.60 ERA and 22:16 K:BB ratio in 35 1/3 innings. He's slated to face the Rangers at home Tuesday.

  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Rays move Drew Smyly to 60-day disabled list

The Rays transferred starting pitcher Drew Smyly to the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday with a torn labrum, per the Tampa Tribune. Smyly will have his left shoulder examined on Thursday by Rangers team doctor, Keith Meister.

"Obviously it's a devastating blow," manager Kevin Cash said. "Obviously we don't know much more beyond other than the fact that we knew regardless of what happens, it's going to take some time for him to get to where he needs to be to help us."

  • Red Sox leaning toward putting Justin Masterson on DL

Red Sox manager John Farrell said the team likely will place struggling starter Justin Masterson on the disabled list due to general fatigue, ruling out the pitcher's start Sunday, per NESN.

Masterson was hit hard Tuesday, giving up six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Athletics, after which Farrell said that "clearly he's not right." Masterson has allowed 10 earned runs in his last two starts. He said he was "not real happy" about the decision to go on the DL, but that he realized his last two outings were not up to par.

While Farrell didn't indicate who would start Sunday, signs point to Steven Wright getting the nod.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Mariners SP James Paxton gets back on track, picks up first win

Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton got back on track and picked up his first win of the season Tuesday night against San Diego.

Paxton (1-2) allowed three hits and walked five while striking out five over six scoreless innings of an 11-4 victory. Of his 109 pitches, 64 strikes.

Paxton has allowed five earned runs over his last four starts (24 2/3 innings). He will look to secure his second win of the season Sunday at home against Boston.

  • Red Sox P Justin Masterson rocked in loss against Athletics

Red Sox pitcher Justin Masterson gave up six earned runs in Tuesday night's 9-2 loss against the Athletics.

Masterson only went 2 1/3 innings and gave up his six runs on six hits. Two of those hits came on home runs. Masterson struck out one batter and walked another.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Masterson may be dealing with an injury.

"Clearly he's not right," Farrell said, via The Boston Globe.

Masterson could wind up being moved to the disabled list soon.

Masterson has now given up 10 earned runs and only thrown a total of four strikeouts in his past two games.

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

White Sox SP Chris Sale twirls 11 K gem vs. Milwaukee

White Sox pitcher Chris Sale went eight innings strong and struck 11 to earn his third win of the season Tuesday night against Milwaukee.

Sale (3-1) allowed a run to score on a ground out in the first inning and permitted a solo home to Elian Herrera in the fifth for his only damage of the evening. He was charged with two earned runs on three hits and two walks over eight innings. Of his 110 pitches, 77 were strikes.

"Every hitter you looked up and you felt like it was 0-2. He was ahead of every hitter. He's got a nice arsenal," Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said.

Sale lowered his ERA 5.09, with a 1.36 WHIP through six starts. He owns a 36:9 K:BB ratio over 43 2/3 innings. His next start will come Monday against Cleveland.

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Yankees P Nathan Eovaldi strikes out six in loss

Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi allowed four earned runs in Tuesday night's 4-2 loss to the Rays.

Eovaldi gave up six hits, walked two batters and struck out six. The four runs allowed tied Eovaldi's season-high, which also occurred on April 26. His six strikeouts were more than the five he's recorded in the past two games combined.

Eovaldi now has a 4.14 ERA for the season.

His next start is projected for Sunday against the Royals.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Twins P Kyle Gibson goes seven strong innings in no-decision

Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson pitched seven solid innings but earned a no-decision in Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to the Tigers in 10 innings.

Gibson only allowed one earned run and struck out six batters. He gave up five hits and didn't walk any batters. However, he left the game with the Twins trailing 1-0, not allowing his strong effort to warrant a win.

Gibson has now only allowed one earned run in his past three starts.

His next start is projected for Sunday against the Rays.

  • Indians' Carlos Carrasco gives up 10 hits in loss

Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco dropped to 4-3 on the season after giving up four runs on 10 hits in a loss to St. Louis.

Carrasco didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. Carrasco threw 104 pitches, 73 strikes.

"I think he pitched better than his line showed," manager Terry Francona said, per the Northeast Ohio Media Group. All the runs against Carlos came with two outs and I think two strikes. Mark Reynolds went down and got a ball that he probably could only do what he did with it – punch it into right field.

"I think they only hit a couple balls – Jhonny Peralta hit one fairly deep to right – that were really driven. Matt Holliday is a big strong kid who stays on the ball and he fought one off to right (center) field. Some of it is their guys with a real good approach."

His next start is scheduled for Sunday, at Texas.
