  • Jake Odorizzi loses it in the middle innings against Royals

Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi followed a sensational start to open the season in his first start with a terrible one Wednesday in Kansas City.

Odorizzi began the game with three shutout innings, but collapsed thereafter. He gave up two runs on three singles in the fourth and five runs on six hits in the fifth. That rally was capped by a three-run homer by Alex Gordon.

The 24-year-old Odorizzi had his ERA skyrocket from 0.00 to 5.73 in the defeat. He will attempt to lower it Tuesday in Baltimore.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

    James Paxton headed for MRI

Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton is slated to undergo an MRI Wednesday to determine the severity of the lat strain behind his left shoulder that forced him from Tuesday's start against the Angels.

The Mariners seem more concerned about the injury than does Paxton at this stage, per MLB.com.

"In the fifth inning there, the last batter, I just felt a little tweak," Paxton said. "I felt fine between innings, so I didn't think it was going to be anything. I threw those cutters to the first hitter (Kole) Calhoun, and that was fine. I just felt it again when I threw the fastball to (Mike) Trout.

"It's just a little strain. I'm going to go get an MRI to see what exactly is going on in there, but I just want to be careful right now. My strength is still good, they said, so I just want to get it checked out."

Jose Quintana allows two runs in seven innings in win Tuesday

White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana gave up just two earned runs on five hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out four in his team's 15-3 win over the Rockies Tuesday.

The White Sox offense came to play in the thin air of Colorado, scoring 11 runs in the final three innings. Quintana (1-0) owns a 2.77 ERA and 12:5 K:BB ratio in 13 innings. He's slated to take on the Indians Sunday.

James Paxton exits start Tuesday with lat strain

Mariners pitcher James Paxton was removed from Tuesday's start against the Angels in the top of the sixth inning and was later diagnosed with a left lat strain, the team announced.

Paxton was visited by a trainer in the top of the sixth, and he had put together four strong innings after giving up two homers in the first inning. He finished with three earned runs on four walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Paxton will be re-evaluated Wednesday, and the team will have a better idea of the extent of his injury at that point.

Corey Kluber strikes out eight in win Tuesday

Indians pitcher Corey Kluber earned his first win of the season Tuesday, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out eight and walking none in his team's 8-6 win over the Padres.

Kluber (1-1) was hammered in his first start, but despite giving up a lot of hits Tuesday, he did enough to pick up the win. He takes a 7.71 ERA and 10:3 K:BB ratio into Sunday's road start against the White Sox.

Rangers pitcher Martin Perez earned his first win of the season Tuesday after giving up four earned runs on eight hits and threee walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 10-7 win over the Red Sox.

He gave up three singles in the seventh inning before being replaced, and all three runs would eventually score. Perez takes a 4.50 ERA and 10:3 K:BB ratio into his next start, which should come Monday against the Mariners.

    Yu Darvish to start Friday

Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish is set to start Friday against the Astros.
