Connor Overton RP | NYM
Reds' Connor Overton: Activated by Cincinnati
Overton (back) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday.
Overton was on the injured list since late May but has been cleared to return for the final week and a half of the regular season. The right-hander recently made a pair of rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville and posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 7.2 innings. The team had him build up as a starter in the minors, and he'll likely have a chance to start for the Reds early next week if he isn't used as a long reliever during the team's weekend series against Milwaukee.

Tyler Wells RP | TB
Orioles' Tyler Wells: Lands on injured list
Wells was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Friday, retroactive to Sept. 20.
Wells struggled mightily against the Tigers on Monday, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three in three innings to take the loss. His injury may have contributed to his woes, and he'll be sidelined for at least two weeks. While the right-hander will be eligible to return for the final game of the regular season, it's possible that he's held out for the remainder of the season, especially if the Orioles are eliminated from postseason contention in the coming weeks. Spenser Watkins was called up Friday and will likely take Wells' place in the rotation.

Spenser Watkins SP | WAS
Orioles' Spenser Watkins: Recalled by Orioles
Watkins was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday.
Watkins was scratched from his scheduled start at Norfolk on Thursday and will ultimately rejoin the major-league club after Tyler Wells (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list. Watkins will pitch out of the bullpen while Mike Baumann takes Wells' spot in the rotation Saturday, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. Over 20 appearances (19 starts) for the Orioles this year, Watkins has posted a 4.37 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 94.2 innings.

Matthew Boyd SP | CHC
Mariners' Matthew Boyd: Efficient in second win
Boyd (2-0) secured the win over the Athletics on Thursday, firing two scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout.
The veteran southpaw pounded 20 of his 25 pitches in for strikes while giving the Mariners a pair of valuable frames following a short start from George Kirby. Boyd has been an invaluable asset to manager Scott Servais as a multi-inning left-handed bullpen option, scattering four hits across 8.1 scoreless frames during his first six appearances since being activated from the injured list Sept. 1.

Louie Varland RP | TOR
Twins' Louie Varland: Called up Friday
Varland was called up from Triple-A St. Paul and will start Friday versus the Angels.
Varland has made two starts with the Twins this season, struggling to 5.23 ERA and 1.45 WHIP while striking out 10 batters over 10.1 innings. He'll likely return to St. Paul following Friday's outing. Aaron Sanchez was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Kyle Bradish SP | BAL
Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Nearly pitches complete game
Bradish (4-7) earned the win Thursday without allowing a run on two hits over 8.2 innings against the Astros. He struck out 10 without walking a batter.
Bradish did not allow an extra-base hit in this stellar outing. After a bumpy start to his major-league career, the 26-year-old rookie has kept his opponent off the board while throwing seven innings or more during three of his last six starts, turning in a 1.64 ERA and 0.78 WHIP and allowing only one homer during that span.
-
Justin Verlander SP | DET
Astros' Justin Verlander: Records loss during quality start
Verlander (17-4) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings in a 2-0 loss against the Orioles. He struck out four without walking a batter.
Verlander surrendered a two-run single to Rougned Odor with two outs in the second inning and did not receive any help from his offense. The loss was the right-hander's first since June 18 -- in 13 starts since, he's posted a 1.34 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 86:12 K:BB through 80.2 innings.

Tommy Henry SP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Will start Friday
Henry will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Friday against the Giants, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
The 25-year-old will make his eighth start of the season for the Diamondbacks on Friday, filling the rotation spot of an injured Ryne Nelson (shoulder). Henry made his big-league debut in early August and has a 5.50 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 25:17 K:BB across 36 innings. It may only be a spot start for the left-hander since Arizona still has five healthy rotation options despite Nelson being on the injured list.
-
Jameson Taillon SP | TOR
Yankees' Jameson Taillon: Eight strikeouts against rival
Taillon did not factor into the decision Thursday, not allowing a run on four hits and a walk over six innings in a 5-4 victory over Boston. He struck out eight.
Taillon allowed two doubles, one from Tommy Pham and the other off the bat of Yu Chang. The righty has allowed one homer or more in eight of his last 10 starts with a 4.25 ERA during that span. Despite Yankee Stadium's short porch, the 30-year-old has had more success at home, recording a 3.47 ERA over 90.2 innings as opposed to a 4.42 ERA over 73.1 innings on the road.

Brandon Woodruff SP | MIL
Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Dominant in win
Woodruff (12-4) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Reds. He struck out 11.
Woodruff shut down the Reds for most of the evening until Kyle Farmer took him deep with a two-out, solo homer in the sixth inning. The right-hander produced 17 swinging strikes and struck out the side in both the second and third innings. Woodruff has gone four consecutive starts without allowing more than two runs and holds a 1.67 ERA over that stretch with 37 strikeouts to only six walks. He's also struck out 10 or more batters in three straight contests.
