  • Tommy Edman LF | LAD

Cardinals' Tommy Edman: Swipes 30th bag of 2022

Edman went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one steal in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Reds.

Edman nabbed second base against righty reliever Hunter Strickland and catcher Chuckie Robinson in the first game of Saturday's twin bill. After a 15-game stretch when he recorded a .426 average over 54 at-bats, the shortstop suffered an 0-for-11 slump in his last three games before breaking out of it in this contest. In addition, the 27-year-old has recorded four steals in his last eight games.

  • Angels' Andrew Velazquez: Shifts to 60-day IL

Velazquez (knee) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday.

Velazquez's move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural, as the Angels announced this week that the shortstop will be shut down for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn right meniscus. He underwent surgery Saturday, per Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times. He'll likely be ready for spring training in 2023, while Livan Soto was called up to provide additional depth in the Angels' infield.

  • Livan Soto SS | BAL

Angels' Livan Soto: Contract selected by Angels

Soto's contract was selected from Double-A Rocket City on Saturday.

Soto was productive at Rocket City to begin the season, hitting .281 with six home runs, 69 runs, 56 RBI and 18 stolen bases. He'll provide additional infield depth for the Angels after David Fletcher (hand) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Soto isn't starting Saturday against the Mariners but should be available off the bench.

  • Javier Baez SS | DET

Tigers' Javier Baez: Dealing with right knee soreness

Baez was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the White Sox due to right knee soreness.

Baez was removed from Saturday's lineup a few hours before the start of the game and is apparently dealing with a knee issue. The severity of the injury isn't yet clear, but he should tentatively be considered day-to-day.

  • Javier Baez SS | DET

Tigers' Javier Baez: Scratched from Saturday's lineup

Baez was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the White Sox for an undisclosed reason.

Baez has been productive recently, going 5-for-7 with a home run, a triple, a double, two runs and a stolen base over the last two games. However, he was removed from Saturday's lineup a few hours before the start of the game. The reason for his removal isn't yet clear, but Ryan Kreidler will take his place at shortstop and bat seventh.

  • Jeremy Pena SS | HOU

Astros' Jeremy Pena: Gets Saturday off

Pena is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.

The Astros are resting a few starters after their playoff-clinching win Friday. David Hensley will start at shortstop and bat ninth, while Aledmys Diaz will jump up into the second spot in the order.

  • Josh H. Smith 2B | TEX

Rangers' Josh Smith: Not in Saturday's lineup

Smith isn't starting Saturday against the Rays.

Smith has hit just .100 with a run and seven strikeouts over six games since rejoining the major-league club, and he'll be on the bench for the third time in the last five matchups. Bubba Thompson is starting in left field and batting ninth.

  • Willy Adames SS | SF

Brewers' Willy Adames: Homers in four-RBI night

Adames went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and an RBI double in a 7-6 victory over the Yankees on Friday.

Adames helped power the Brewers to victory with his 29th home run of the season and a ground-rule double that netted him his 89th RBI. Adames' average has been down considerably from his .262 mark last season, but he has more than made up for it by hitting for power. The 27-year-old shortstop is on the precipice of achieving his first 30-homer season.

  • Jon Berti 3B | CHC

Marlins' Jon Berti: On bench Saturday

Berti isn't starting Saturday against Washington.

Berti started the last three games and went 0-for-12 with a walk and three strikeouts. Jerar Encarnacion will take over in left field and bat eighth.

  • Miguel Rojas 2B | LAD

    Marlins' Miguel Rojas: Resting Wednesday

Rojas isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Nationals.

Rojas reached base in each of the last four games and went 5-for-15 with an RBI, a walk and two strikeouts across that span. Joey Wendle will take over at shortstop and bat second.
