Desmond Ridder QB | GB
Vikings' Desmond Ridder: Joining Minnesota
Ridder agreed to a contract with the Vikings on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle) will avoid a stint on injured reserve, but since he's considered week-to-week and is likely to miss multiple games, the Vikings will bring Ridder aboard to bolster their depth under center. Carson Wentz looks on track to replace McCarthy as the Vikings' starter beginning with Sunday's game against the Bengals, but Ridder could displace undrafted rookie Max Brosmer for the top backup job. A 2022 third-round pick, Ridder has made 25 appearances (18 starts) through his first three NFL seasons between stops with the Falcons and Raiders, completing 63.6 percent of his passes for 6.8 yards per attempt and a 16:14 TD:INT while adding 293 yards and five scores on the ground.

Joe Burrow QB | CIN
Bengals' Joe Burrow: Officially moved to IR
The Bengals placed Burrow (toe) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Burrow's move to IR was fully expected after Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed Monday that the quarterback would require surgery to address a turf toe injury, per Ben Baby of ESPN.com. The Bengals have yet to settle on a date for Burrow's surgery, but once the procedure is performed, the 28-year-old is expected to face a recovery timeline of a minimum of three months. With Burrow out until around at least mid-December, the Bengals will turn the offense over to backup Jake Browning, beginning with Sunday's game in Minnesota. The Bengals signed Brett Rypien off their practice squad Tuesday to step in as Browning's understudy.

J.J. McCarthy QB | MIN
Vikings' J.J. McCarthy: Likely out at least two weeks
McCarthy (ankle) is expected to miss 2-to-4 weeks after sustaining a right high-ankle sprain in Sunday's 22-6 loss to the Falcons, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The Vikings haven't provided an official timeline for McCarthy's return from the injury, but Carson Wentz will be in line to start at quarterback for at least this Sunday's game against the Bengals. Schefter notes that because the Vikings are playing overseas Weeks 4 (Sept. 28 versus the Steelers in Dublin) and 5 (Oct. 5 versus the Browns in London) before heading into a bye Week 6, the team could be inclined to err on the side of caution and hold McCarthy out for the next three games to give him sufficient time to heal up from the ankle injury.

Brett Rypien QB | MIN
Bengals' Brett Rypien: Promoted from practice squad
The Bengals signed Rypien off their practice squad Tuesday.
With Joe Burrow set to undergo surgery to address a Grade 3 turf toe injury and likely to remain out for at least three months, the Bengals will add Rypien to the roster to serve as the top backup to new starter Jake Browning. Rypien is on track to be active for Sunday's game in Minnesota, but his performance in practice over the ensuing weeks could determine whether he sticks around in the No. 2 role for the entirety of Burrow's absence. The Bengals added Mike White and Sean Clifford to their practice squad Tuesday, and either could eventually challenge Rypien for the top backup gig once they get up to speed with the playbook.

Geno Smith QB | LV
Raiders' Geno Smith: Throws three picks on MNF
Smith completed 24 of 43 pass attempts for 180 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing five times for 20 yards in Monday's 20-9 loss to the Chargers.
This outing was doomed from the get go when Smith threw the first of three interceptions on the first play from scrimmage. The 34-year-old had no answers after netting just 45 yards of offense through the first half of action Monday. This putrid showing comes on the heels of Smith airing it out for 362 yards in a Week 1 win over the Patriots, highlighting the peaks and valleys that come with a quarterback who threw 21 TDs to 15 picks with Seattle last season. The Raiders will be counting on a bounce-back performance from its veteran signal-caller in a softer matchup against Washington in Week 3.
-
Justin Herbert QB | LAC
Chargers' Justin Herbert: Efficient in Monday win
Herbert completed 19 of 27 attempts for 242 yards and two touchdowns in Monday's 20-9 win over the Raiders. He also led the team in rushing on nine attempts for 31 yards but fumbled once.
Herbert took what the defense gave him all evening, and the Raiders never seemed to have an answer. The sixth-year quarterback efficiently marched down the field whenever Los Angeles needed a sustaining drive, and were it not for the ineptitude of Geno Smith and company on the other side, Herbert probably could have pressed further for a bigger game. It's clear the 27-year-old is looking to be more mobile in 2025, as that's now back-to-back games with 30 or more rushing yards, a feat he accomplished just four times total last season.
-
C.J. Stroud QB | HOU
Texans' C.J. Stroud: Slight improvement in MNF loss
Stroud completed 13 of 24 pass attempts for 207 yards and a touchdown while rushing four times for 27 yards in Monday's 20-19 loss to Tampa Bay.
Stroud didn't waste much time scoring the Texans' first touchdown of the season after failing to get his team into the end zone against the Rams in Week 1. The 24-year-old dialed up WR Nico Collins for a 27-yard score on Houston's opening drive, but that would end up being his only touchdown of the contest. Stroud failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity on the opponent's one-yard line early in the fourth quarter when he missed on two consecutive throws to turn the ball over on downs. With marginal yardage totals (197.5 passing yards per game) and just one touchdown to one interception through two starts, Stroud has played his way out of starting consideration in standard 1QB formats ahead of Sunday's tilt against Jacksonville.

Baker Mayfield QB | TB
Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield: More late-game heroics Monday night
Mayfield completed 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while adding three carries for 33 yards in the Buccaneers' 20-19 win over the Texans on Monday night. He also committed a fumble recovered by Tampa Bay.
Mayfield was in danger of a second straight sub-200-yard performance to open the season, but the veteran signal-caller came alive on Tampa Bay's game-winning drive. He took the Bucs a total of 80 yards on 11 plays in just over two minutes, completing seven of nine passes while adding a 15-yard scramble before Rachaad White capped off the march with a two-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, Mayfield also connected with Emeka Egbuka on a 15-yard scoring pass for the rookie's third touchdown over the first two games. Despite completing just 60.0 percent of his passes through the first pair of contests, Mayfield also will take a sparkling 5:0 TD:INT into a Week 3 home matchup against the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Adrian Martinez QB | NYJ
Adrian Martinez: Reverts to practice squad
Martinez reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction report.
With Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) and Kurtis Rourke (knee) both unavailable for Sunday's game against the Saints, Martinez was elevated to the active roster to serve as the 49ers' backup quarterback behind Mac Jones. Purdy is not expected to play Week 3 against the Cardinals, so Martinez will likely be elevated to the active roster for a second straight week.

Jayden Daniels QB | WAS
Commanders' Jayden Daniels: Deemed day-to-day by coach
Coach Dan Quinn said Monday that Daniels is considered "day-to-day" due to the knee injury that he suffered Thursday at Green Bay, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Quinn added that Daniels underwent an MRI on Friday, and he's "already begun his return-to-play process with us. ... What does that mean for Sunday [against the Raiders]? I can't tell you that now. I'll share more when we get to Wednesday." Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported earlier Monday that Daniels has a sprained knee, but Quinn would only call it a "knee injury," per Commanders writer Ben Standig. If he isn't able to go this weekend, backup Marcus Mariota is on hand to lead the Commanders offense.
