  • Jared Goff QB | DET

Lions' Jared Goff: Suiting up Friday

Goff will play in Friday's preseason game versus the Falcons, Bridget Condon of NFL Network reports.

On Monday, coach Dan Campbell implied Goff and the rest of the Lions' healthy starters would log about one quarter of action, and that seemingly will come to pass in the team's first exhibition. He'll thus be working with running backs D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark and tight end T.J. Hockenson.

  • Browns' Jacoby Brissett: Not in line to play Friday

The Browns have announced that Brissett is among the team's players not expected to play in Friday's preseason opener against the Jaguars.

Other key players not in line to see action include top wideout Amari Cooper as well as running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. While Brissett is not expected to play Friday, Deshaun Watson is slated to start at QB for the Browns, with Joshua Dobbs and Josh Rosen also in the mix to see work versus Jacksonville.

  • Deshaun Watson QB | CLE

Browns' Deshaun Watson: Slated to play Friday

Watson remains slated to play in Friday night's preseason game against the Jaguars, James Palmer of NFL Network and Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer report.

As Friday's 7:00PM ET kickoff approaches, NFL designee Peter C. Harvey -- who was appointed by commissioner Roger Goodell to hear the league's appeal of Watson's six-game suspension -- has yet to render a decision that might affect the quarterback's status. Per Cabot, Watson was present for warmups ahead of Cleveland's contest versus Jacksonville, which he is in line to start.

  • Justin Herbert QB | LAC

Chargers' Justin Herbert: Unlikely to play Saturday

Herbert and other starters aren't expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, Elliott Teaford of The Press-Enterprise reports.

It's a strong bet both teams rest starters, or at least the key players. The Chargers have a second-year head coach in Brandon Staley and a core group of skill-position players that were together for at least one year before that. Herbert will again look to Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler as his primary threats, leading what figures to be one of the better offenses in the NFL this year.

  • Trey Lance QB | LAC

49ers' Trey Lance: Likely playing Friday

Coach Kyle Shanahan suggested Lance will play in Friday's preseason game against Green Bay, Briana McDonald of the 49ers' official site reports.

Shanahan said he'd like Lance to play in the first and third games of the preseason. Other starters figure to play, though it isn't clear if that includes superstars like LT Trent Williams, WR Deebo Samuel and TE George Kittle.

  • Marcus Mariota QB | WAS

Falcons' Marcus Mariota: Should play some Friday

Mariota is expected to play about a quarter in Friday's preseason matchup with Detroit, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said he and Falcons coach Arthur Smith agreed to play starters for about a quarter. Mariota thus gets his first chance to throw passes to Drake London and Kyle Pitts in a game setting, assuming both guys also suit up. Reports out of camp suggest Mariota has been consistently better than rookie QB Desmond Ridder, a four-year college starter and third-round pick.

  • Kirk Cousins QB | LV

Vikings' Kirk Cousins: Won't play Sunday

Coach Kevin O'Connell announced Friday that Cousins has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Sunday's preseason game against the Raiders.

With Cousins unavailable for the contest, Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond will handle the team's QB duties versus Las Vegas on Sunday, while O'Connell noted that "no matter who starts, they'll both play a ton." Per Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, Cousins, who is reportedly dealing with minimal symptoms, could return to the field as early as Tuesday.

  • Tyrod Taylor QB | GB

Giants' Tyrod Taylor: Tosses TD in preseason opener

Taylor completed 13 of 21 pass attempts for 129 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers in Thursday's 23-21 preseason victory over New England. He also rushed once for two yards.

Daniel Jones and Davis Webb also logged time behind center in the contest, but Taylor saw the most action of the trio. He was responsible for the team's only passing touchdown, connecting with Richie James for a seven-yard score in the second quarter. Taylor will open the regular season as New York's backup quarterback, but he offers a viable alternative to Jones if the latter struggles in new head coach Brian Daboll's offense.

  • Daniel Jones QB | IND

Giants' Daniel Jones: Plays two drives against Patriots

Jones completed six of 10 passes for 69 yards and rushed once for six yards in Thursday's 23-21 preseason win over the Patriots. He didn't have a touchdown or turnover while playing the first two series.

Jones got the offense down to New England's seven-yard line on the opening drive, but the Giants ended up settling for a field goal before punting on the second possession. This was an unremarkable start to the preseason for Jones under new coach Brian Daboll, but he's still locked in as the Giants' starting quarterback. Jones will likely see a similar workload in the team's second preseason game at home against the Bengals on Aug. 21.

  • Tyler Huntley QB | BAL

Ravens' Tyler Huntley: Solid in preseason debut

Huntley completed 16 of 18 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in a 23-10 preseason win over Tennessee on Thursday, adding three carries for 17 yards.

Huntley was accurate on short passes and mostly stuck to throws within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage, though he did complete a 22-yarder to TE Isaiah Likely and a 14-yard, jump-ball TD to WR Shemar Bridges. The young QB got the start with Lamar Jackson and nearly every other starter sidelined for the Ravens, and it was a solid showing for Huntley apart from one early misfire on what should have been a long completion. It's still pretty much the same story as last year -- Huntley is mobile, smart and does well with short throws, but he's also small (196 pounds) and about three tiers below Jackson in terms of arm strength.
