Oilers' Matt Tomkins: Waived for AHL demotion

Tomkins was placed on waivers Sunday to be loaned to AHL Bakersfield.

Tomkins went 20-13-7 with a 2.98 GAA and a .904 save percentage in 42 appearances with Edmonton's top minor-league affiliate in the 2025-26 regular season. If he clears waivers, he should see plenty of action for AHL Bakersfield again during the 2026-27 campaign.

  • Capitals' Clay Stevenson: Ends up on waivers

Stevenson was placed on waivers by the Capitals on Sunday.

Stevenson was the main competition for Charlie Lindgren's roster spot in training camp, but the Capitals opted to stick with the veteran. The 27-year-old Stevenson had a solid stint in the NHL last season, where he posted a 3-1-0 record, a 2.00 GAA and a .921 save percentage across four regular-season games. With AHL Hershey, he was nearly just as effective over a larger body of work, compiling an 18-13-4 record, a 2.62 GAA and a .912 save percentage across 37 regular-season appearances. He's set to be the organization's No. 3 netminder and could once again see NHL work in the 2026-27 season if either Lindgren or Logan Thompson suffer an injury.

  • Capitals' Louis Belpedio: Lands on waivers

Belpedio was moved to the waiver wire Sunday for the purpose of being assigned to AHL Hershey.

Belpedio recorded nine goals, 34 points and 67 PIM in 68 regular-season games for Washington's top minor-league affiliate in 2025-26. Assuming he clears waivers, he could spend most, if not all, of the 2026-27 campaign with AHL Hershey.

  • Capitals' Jonny Brodzinski: Waived for AHL assignment

Brodzinski was placed on waivers Sunday to be sent to AHL Hershey.

Brodzinski signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with Washington in July. He compiled six goals, 16 points, 63 shots on net and 47 hits in 55 NHL appearances with the Rangers during the 2025-26 regular season. However, he could begin the 2026-27 campaign with Washington's top minor-league if he clears waivers.

  • Capitals' Spencer Smallman: Hits waivers Sunday

Smallman was placed on waivers by the Capitals on Sunday.

Smallman was called up by the Capitals for a brief stint in 2025-26, but he didn't appear in a game and spent over a month of the season recovering from injury. The 30-year-old winger posted four goals, seven assists and 11 points across 24 regular-season games with AHL Hershey last season. If he goes unclaimed, he'll report to Hershey ahead of his third season with the team.

  • Penguins' Ben Kindel: Shifts to IR

Kindel (lower body) was placed on injured reserve by the Penguins on Sunday.

Kindel was deemed week-to-week by the Penguins after he sustained his lower-body injury in Monday's preseason outing against the Sabres. The 19-year-old center played a large role for Pittsburgh in 2025-26, where he compiled 17 goals, 35 points, 151 shots on net and 58 blocked shots across 77 regular-season outings. While he'll likely miss the first handful of regular-season games, he's near lock to take over a middle-six center role when he returns. The rising star is worth being an IR stash in all deep fantasy leagues.

  • Penguins' Blake Lizotte: Moves to IR

Lizotte (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Sunday.

Lizotte has been upgraded to day-to-day after being week-to-week and participated in Sunday's practice, according to Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site. If Lizotte misses the start of the 2026-27 campaign, it doesn't appear as though it will be a lengthy absence. Lizotte contributed seven goals, 19 points, 49 shots on net, 35 blocked shots and 49 hits in 55 games with the Penguins during the 2025-26 regular season.

  • Justin Brazeau RW | PIT

Penguins' Justin Brazeau: Lands on IR

Brazeau (lower body) was placed on injured reserve by the Penguins on Sunday.

Brazeau is currently considered week-to-week while recovering from the lower-body injury he sustained in the preseason. The 28-year-old winger is coming off a career year, where he posted 17 goals, 34 points, 104 shots on net, 90 hits and 44 blocked shots across 64 regular-season outings. When he recovers, he'll likely factor into the Penguins' bottom six on a somewhat regular basis.

  • Ryan Graves D | PIT

    Penguins' Ryan Graves: Out indefinitely

Graves (lower body) is out indefinitely and was placed on injured reserve Sunday.

Graves will miss the beginning of the 2026-27 campaign, and it's unclear when he will be ready to return. He contributed one goal, 21 shots on net, 38 blocked shots and 23 hits in 22 regular-season appearances for Pittsburgh in 2025-26.

  • Tristan Broz C | PIT

Penguins' Tristan Broz: Won't practice Sunday

Broz (lower body) won't take part in Sunday's practice.

Broz logged 10:07 of ice time in Saturday's 3-1 preseason win over Buffalo. He is being evaluated after sustaining an injury in the contest. Broz notched 16 goals and 39 points in 47 regular-season outings for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2025-26.
